YTF's Mock Draft v1.0

As a basic premise, I'll state that we don't trade up/down/around and keep our picks. There is absolutely zero need to project that level of stuff. Secondly, I believe we'll stay with the 4-3, regardless of coaching changes. Our team is geared towards the 4-3. I do not believe in the 3-4 either, for that matter, but that is my personal philosophy. Also, this mock is done with the assumption that we sign no one of note in the off-season.

1. CB - Brandon Harris - Miami, FL
Harris is not too far behind the "elite 2" CB's that everyone talks about. Since we are not picking in the top 5, we will miss out on both of those CB's. Harris has played extremely well in his match-ups with "name" receivers. I like his physical build and willingness to support the run better than Jenkins. Harris has smooth feet and plays the ball well.

2. WLB - Travis Lewis - Oklahoma
I think we have the start to a good LB core with Ryans and Cushing, but I feel that a WLB who can spy the QB or close on the flats will allow our DB's to play their man more. On top of that, I think Lewis is a flat out stud and just one of those guys who is always around the ball.

3. C - Jake Kirkpatrick - TCU
Depth on the OL. Myers has played better than expected this year, but that is just average, and unfortunately, that is his ceiling. I'd like to see someone who can offer a bigger impact and hold the position down going forward.

4. DE - Greg Romeus - Pittsburgh
You might recognize the name as he was getting a little attention before the season as a possible first or second round pick. He hasn't had a great year and neither has his team. He's got NFL talent and is someone who should fit nicely into our rotation.

5. RB - Kendall Hunter - Oklahoma State
The new Steve Slaton. We will draft a RB. We have our every day guy in Foster, but having a guy like Hunter who can make a play on the outside and take it home is a nice wrinkle to have. Hunter has been productive when healthy.

6. WR - DeAndre Brown - Southern Mississippi
He's the primary WR for his team, and rightfully so. He gets all of the attention and shifts, and still produces. He has a giant frame, which will be nice to have in the redzone. I think he would be a nice piece to our WR rotation and has the ability to subplant Walters or Jones.

7. K/P - Alex Henry - Nebraska
His leg strength is amazing on long field goals. He gets the ball up quickly and carries it on touch backs. I don't think Rackers has been bad at all, but this would be an upgrade. He also doubles as a punter, which could very much use an upgrade.

Harris best corner available, but not bpa

Lewis is very productive, so is Sharpton/Diles

Kirkpatrick is a true replacement for Myers

Romeus is excellent sleeper DE pick, had a bit of down year but talent is there.

Kendall Hunter jump all over him if still here?

DeAndre Brown is a good receiver borderline roster/practice squad, just look at Dickerson.

Alex Henry is starting punter day one, good for FG attempts 48 up

1. I really like Harris @ CB but why do you expect Kubiak to go CB again, altough I hope he does? i am also interested in Nick Fairley but a cover Cb shuts down an entire side.
2. i pass on Lb but he is good
3. like the center but do not see Smithiak moving myers.

I don't think we're in a position to draft strictly BPA. BPA will likely be a QB like Mallet or a WR like Jones. We draft BPA out of a selective few positions.

Lewis is very productive, so is Sharpton/Diles
I like Sharpton but really dislike Diles and I've made that clear since we drafted him. Could be my bias against his school though. However, Sharpton/Diles aren't that productive and Lewis would upgrade the front/back 7, depending on which you feel is our biggest need.

Kirkpatrick is a true replacement for Myers
I don't know if he's an instant replacement. Myers seems to have the ability to just stick around. I think Kirkpatrick is at least depth and has the ability to challenge for the starting spot.

Romeus is excellent sleeper DE pick, had a bit of down year but talent is there.

There are a lot of other RBs in the draft, and honestly, they are a dime a dozen. The shelf life on RBs is only a few years in most cases. I think his injuries will drop him. I think he could get onto the field because of the pass happy system run at OKST and his ability to help in pass protection.

DeAndre Brown is a good receiver borderline roster/practice squad, just look at Dickerson.
This was more of a BPA pick than anything else. Injury concerns and lack of speed. Natural redzone target though.

I don't think Kubiak gets the say in what we pick. I think the new (hopefully) defensive coordinator gets more of an input. Ideally I'd like to draft a FS, as would everyone I'm sure, but there isn't the talent. While Eric Berry was an elite talent, that is an example of what a true FS can do to change a defense and in turn the W/L record.

Also, I think we really do need another top notch LB. Ryans is coming back of a torn knee, Cushing regressed this year, and Diles isn't starter material.

Alex Henery does not kick off for the Huskers. They have a specialist who kicks the living )&*#&@(*$& out of the ball.

1. Harris, best CB available at that point and a desperate need of the Texans. Excellent pick, he's going to be a really good/great cover corner in the NFL.

2. Lewis, excellent pick as well, big upgrade at WLB. If Kubiak makes the pick though he'll never choose Lewis, instead he'll give Sharpton another 2-3 yrs. to prove if he can handle the job and improve.

3. Kirkpatrick, I don't know much about him but I trust some of these guys opinions enough to know that he'd be a good pick. I agree that Kubiak won't replace Myers right away but it would sure be nice to have some quality backup pushing for a starting role.

4. Romeus, if still available he's an excellent depth pick. I'd sure like another DT instead of a DE though.

5. Hunter, I don't know anything about him and it seems early to pick a practice squad RB.

6. Brown, again don't know anything about him but a tall athletic WR is a good pick at this point.

7. Henry, I doubt the Texans get rid of Rackers but if the guy can punt then he'd be a good upgrade over Turk.

Overall I really like this mock draft but I'd like to see a DT chosen at #4 we'll have enough depth at DE with Williams, Smith, Barwin, Anderson, and Jamison. We need an upgrade at both DT spots.

Not to nitpick, but Ryans is out with a torn Achilles tendon. Still a long rehab and most likely a loss of quickness and speed as a by product of the injury.

I wouldn't doubt a trade up if a guy we likes slides a bit. We are in a position that one or two guys can make us ALOT better.

Thank you for pointing that out. My point on LBs remains the same. We need another high level LB. We cannot get by another season with Zac Diles as our starter. We need an impact LB.

I disagree honestly. We (still) need a FS. We need a WOLB. We need a C. We need a legitimate LT; yes, I am still upset we wasted a pick on Brown, and no we aren't turning this thread into why I am right all these years later and now there is a growing interest in making him a LG. We still need a CB. We still need an impact DL other than Mario.

We need impact at a few positions. We don't need talent across the board like before, but we need a serious upgrade to quite a few positions before we can compete. FS and LT would be the most obvious examples, followed by OLB and another starting CB.

We don't have the depth to give picks away. Honestly, very few clubs ever do. And even when they do, it's only for a short period. Fool's gold way of thinking. Injuries happen. Player regression happens. FA happens. Depth is just a fictional word in the NFL.

I would love to see Henery in a Texans uni, I just don't think he lasts till the 7th. If you want him you are going to have to pick him up earlier, but the flipside is that I think he could easily cover two roster spots, K and P.

He can become a ball-hawk but tends to just deflect passes but regardless he is my #2 best CB after Patrick Peterson and ahead of Prince Amukamara.

Lewis is undersized which allows him to fly across the field and make plays. He would be an excellent addition to our roster and he could start as a rookie.

3. C - Jake Kirkpatrick - TCU

One of the better centers in the draft. He is tough as nails and can hold his ground against bigger players.

Not sure how much he falls but he was having one of the best seasons as a DE in the NCAA. Steal if he falls this low.

He's not big like other smaller backs but he is fast and is not afraid to go between the guards and tackles. Would love to have him on our team.

6. WR - DeAndre Brown - Southern Mississippi

Don't know too much about him but he fills a need for us.

I've ehard his name but haven't seen him play. If he can punt and kick that's good for us in case our punter goes down or whatever.

I'm going to refer to your paragraph rather than your selection comments. Unless you meant to say we "won't" rather than we "don't" because we have and not too long ago. My opinion is we should have drafted up to select Thomas out of UT for our free safety and would be much better seeing how out #1 Cb worked out.

As low as we will probably be drafting, it should not take a 2nd to move up enough to get Patrick Peterson. If we could get him and keep our #2, I would gladly give a 3rd and 5th & maybe a 4 instead of 5.

I was referencing this particular draft. As in: "In this mock draft, the Texans to do not trade any picks." I also touched more on this in the next sentence. The actual draft in April is a very fluid process. A lot of movements, and the Texans have certainly done some moving.

I'm not usually a fan of trading up, and I don't think Earl Thomas was worth giving up picks for, honestly. Eric Berry, I would have listened and thought about that one long and hard.

As good as Peterson is, he isn't worth what it would cost to move into the top 3. Even if we tank our season and lose out, we would have to give up our entire first day and then commit a ton of cap space.

The paragraph was written by someone else, but the blue are my comments...just thought I'd point that out. I wish the Texans would move up the draft to grab a guy they know that can help out on defense (or offense). I would much rather give up a few later picks and move up to get sure talent than use our later picks to grab developmental types.

In my dream world, we select Peterson with our # 10 and then trade with New England for their higher first round pick (another team's) say our 2nd this year and 1st & 3rd from next year. We then select Nick Fairley. We then trade for N.E.'s later first round pick giving up our 3rd & 4th & 5th this year and our 2nd round next year. We then select Brandon Harris CB late in first.

That's honestly what free agents are for. You address a few needs there and then can play the draft and move up to get a guy or down to get more picks. We almost refuse to do that most of the time.
