Default Does Not Look Like Fisher Intends to Play Nice with VY

Clear message to Bud.

Jeff Fisher says the Titans locker room is “much better” after Vince Young’s antics

Quote:
In the midst of another challenging season, Titans coach Jeff Fisher spoke candidly with Steve Mariucci in an interview aired earlier tonight on NFL Network.

Tired and haggard, Fisher looked more like Cliff Clavin on a camping trip than the ever-youthful general who has patrolled the sidelines for the Houston/Tennessee Oilers/Titans for 16 years.

Much of the discussion focused on quarterback Vince Young. After saying that Fisher doesn’t know where Young is and that he hasn’t seen Young since he left the locker room in a huff after a November loss to the Redskins, Fisher said that “the locker room is much better because of [Young's] actions after the game.”

Fisher explained that “to a man” Young’s teammates disagreed with his actions. “He’s probably better off not being here,” Fisher said.

It’s a strong statement, and it makes Fisher’s lack of interest in working with Young as clear as it ever has been. Though Fisher said of his own status that he’s under contract for 2011 and that he hopes to remain in the job beyond the expiration of his current deal, we can’t imagine Fisher staying put if Young returns, even though owner Bud Adams already has said he wants the coach and the quarterback to get along and work together.

Asked what Fisher would change about Young from an off-field perspective, Fisher said generally that his desire for any player is to understand what it takes to be a pro, and the time commitment involved. Fisher also said that he wants players to realize that the game has ups and downs, and to be able to deal with them.

Though Fisher didn’t single Young out, it’s clear that the comments had the most relevance to a single player — Vince Young.

Judging by Kenny Britt's towel last night, I don't think everyone in the Titan's locker room has Fisher's back on this:

not surprised that the players support VY. if the team supported Fisher, they wouldn't be o-fer since VY and Fisher's mishandling of the problem.

don't get me wrong, VY was petulant and immature with his actions, but Fisher only has to look at himself for why VY hates him so much. Fisher has had too quick of a hook with Vince and there is no trust, either way.

this whole situation is more Bud's fault than anyones. Fisher isn't a VY guy but the owner is. That creates problem and being a Fisher fan, I hope he just leaves the Titans and goes somewhere else.

VY needs to grow up and learn how to deal with adversity. real adversity. not just being able to come back from being a few touchdowns down but being able to deal with real adversity. hostile fans even in your own stadium. injuries. coaches criticisms. long nights in the film room.

its pretty clear that Vince is more interested in being a QB more than he is interested in working to be a QB. He thinks he is already a finished product, and although his throwing and ability to read defenses had improved, it hasn't improved enough. but until he surrounds himself with people other than yes men and hood rat clingers on, he will never get it.

Vince needs to go somewhere where there is a coach that he will listen to and respect. I just don't know if there is one that would actually take a flyer on Vince right now.

I know people think I am crazy when I say this, but I think things may have turned out different for him if he would have been drafted by Houston. We wouldn't have Mario, but did that guy even play last Thursday? We would have 2 2nd rounders, we would have never re-upped Carr which would have saved us loads of money and space, and we would have never had to sign Schaub which would save us more. Couple that with a capable offensive QB guru in Kubiak and the best WR in football in AJ, and Vince may have continued to show the magic in Houston that he showed in Austin.

I really think he could have done well here, but that is the past...for now, I will just put my flame retardant suit on and wait for the heat to come from my fellow posters. Irregardless of your opinion, there is a chance that Vince AND THE TEXANS could have benefitted from cutting bait with Carr and moving on back in 2005. It's obvious it couldn't have gone much worse than it has without Vince.

Mario, you suck. and these aformentioned feelings about Vince as a Texan are not an indictment of Schaub. I am one of Schaub's stanchest supporters. he has been great and was worth the 2 2nd Rounders, but the fail of Carr and the loss of the picks, coupled with Mario's ability to sleepwalk through NFL seasons, has greatly retarded the growth and progress of this franchise.

Mario, you suck.
I think a player of VY's "caliber" fails no matter which team he goes to.

So, he would have had those same problems here in Houston. In fact, it would have been even worse than in Tennessee because he knows he has a lot, no he has a TON of supporters in Houston.

If you think there was drama in Budville...it would have been ten times worse here. I promise you that. There's no way VY would have changed his spots just by being here. He would still be the same VY, but with a greater propensity to rebel and be a doosh because of the overflowing support he would have around him.

In addition, it would have meant four or five years of wasted time. I think, that in spite of all the wrongs by McNair, he got this one right.

Don't get me wrong, we're not world beaters because we passed on selecting VY. We're just not as engulfed in drama as we would be if he were here.

i respect your opinion, i just think he may have done better here under better offensive coaching (that would have actually believed in him unlike Chow) and with AJ things could have been different. Remember that AJ went to the Pro Bowl with a loser like Carr throwing to him.

It's not crazy, but I don't think he would have done better in Houston. His biggest obstacle is himself. He is obviously his own worst enemy, and his lack of maturity and inability to understand the amount of dedication required to excel as an NFL QB is indicative that he would be struggling anywhere he was drafted.

And, with his maturity issues, I think his hometown would have made things even worse than they are now simply because of the "yes men" he would have surrounded himself with, as well as the potential ramifications of being close to his old stomping grounds. There would have been too many folks giving him a hometown discount by covering up his actions and defending things that are really indefensible.

VY has a lot of raw potential, but he's got a long way to go before he's refined that potential into a consistent career.

I see your argument but... First as GP and DB mention Vince being in Houston might have made his off field problems even worse. In addition he would have been missing two key pieces he had in TN which should have made life in the NFL easier for him - a great D to minimize what the O had to accomplish and a running game. Yes he would have had better coaching here (although to hear it nowadays Kubiak isn't competent to coach a dog to sit) but except for AJ the team around him would have made his job harder.

We criticize Kubes a lot, but he knew VY was a project no matter what team he went to. I would think a lot of coaches would have passed on him because more than likely they would be fired before he became a polished QB.

VY also wouldn't have had the great running game that kept a lot of pressure off him.

Oh, I thought this board censored out "douche" so I was trying to get around it.

Anyways, I think you have a bit of a point regarding Chow. IIRC, Chow was a USC guy, right? And Fisher...he was a USC guy, right? And then there's Bud who threw VY at Chow and Fisher...in a draft that also had, drum roll please...another USC guy at QB. All this came after VY, drum roll please...beat USC in the title game.

There very well could have been some animosity and tension that hindered a full, productive relationship there.

I just don't know that VY could still flourish in Houston. That was a pretty poor Texans team back then. We were just shedding the players from the expansion draft, and trying to start a different drafting process.

It's plausible that he could have faired well. I just don't think he would have.

Where things might have been interesting is if he HAD landed here...did poorly, since his biggest obstacle is himself (as double barrel pointed out, and I agree with) and then get this:

BUD ADAMS freaks out at how Houston was so moronic and didn't know how to use such a talented guy as VY. Bud Adams then trades for VY, and we get some picks from Bud that we magically turn into the best player in Texans franchise history.

Now THAT would have been awesome, and worth the misery of having VY on this team for a year or two.

I actually agree. We would have had the extra picks, we would have moved on from the VY debacle by now, Kubiak probably would have been fired by now, and we'd be on our third coach working toward the future.

Mario is one of the top three 4-3 DEs in the game, period. If that sucks, then I don't know what to tell you. A team's pass rush is not dependent upon an edge rushing DE. The interior pass rush is the most important thing. As usual, football is won and lost in the trenches.
