How many head coach jobs are going to be open?

This is starting to look like it's not going to be the best offseason to be trying to replace a coach considering how much competition is going to be out there.

Here are teams that appear they could be looking for a new HC this offseason or definitely will be ...

Bengals
Browns
Texans
Titans
Broncos
Vikings
Panthers
49ers

These teams are outside possibilites

Jags (if they falter down the stretch)
Chargers (if they continue to collapse after they appeared to be rebounding)
Cowboys (actually I think JJ holds on to Garrett)
Giants (I doubt this one however if they collapse Coughlin's name will be in the mix)
Cardinals (Wisenhunt probably keeps his job riding on the merits of being the only guy to take the Cardinals to the SB ala Jeff Fisher however they are a mess right now)

If Cowher is going to get back into coaching now will be the time. He might actually get some bidding wars going on for his services which rules out the Texans IMO.

Son of Gruden spills the beans on coaching plans

There’s a growing belief that former Raiders and Bucs coach Jon Gruden will return to the NFL in 2011. As his son, Deuce (really?), tells it, Gruden may be targeting 2012.

Via The Big Lead, Deuce Gruden appeared on the Sporting Rave podcast, and Deuce said that the family could be heading for San Fran or Cleveland.

“He was going to let me finish high school,” Deuce Gruden said. “They were talking about going to San Francisco, but that’ll probably be in the next two years . . . or maybe Cleveland.”

The problem is that the San Fran and Cleveland jobs may not be open come 2012. So the Grudens may have to move now, if a job becomes available, if the price offered is right, if he gets the power he seeks, and if there’s enough labor progress to make the 49ers or the Browns willing to risk Gruden’s first year being hampered by a truncated offseason.

I had a feeling Gruden would like to return to the Bay, and now that the Oakland job seems secure, the 49ers are the only other option.

I think the Browns and Vikings both keep their coaches. Cleveland has been in a lot of close games so I say Mangini probably gets one more year. If the Vikes continue to win there should be no reason to get rid of Leslie Frazier. Out of the other teams I think only the 49ers may decide to stick with their current HC. They've played better since Troy Smith became QB and in that division they're still in the playoff hunt

And what pisses me off the most is that Texan fans are taking a "Oh, we can't change becuase of the lockout" approach.

If that's the reason we're not changing coaches, we deserve to be mired in the muck of mediocrity we're currently in.

I don't think most fans are saying we can't change because of the lock out, but that we won't change because of the lock out. Big difference.
