The Jaguars reeled in their second free agent in as many days Thursday when they came to terms with Houston Texans cornerback Ken Wright.
Wright is scheduled to visit the Jaguars' complex today and sign the one-year deal that includes a signing bonus. The Jaguars signed defensive end Marcellus Wiley of the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday to a similar one-year contract with a signing bonus. Wright is the sixth veteran the Jaguars have added in the offseason but only the second unrestricted free agent. The first one was defensive end Reggie Hayward of the Broncos, who was their one high-priced free agent with $10 million in guaranteed money. The other four additions -- Wiley, defensive tackle Martin Chase, cornerback Terry Cousin and guard Brent Smith -- were so-called street free agents who had been cut by their previous teams. The Jaguars are concentrating on defensive linemen and cornerbacks in free agency. Five of the six veterans they signed played those two positions. The only exception was Smith. Wright was a nickel back with the Texans who has played six years in the league, the first three with the Vikings who drafted him after his junior season out of Northwestern State in the fourth round in 1999. He was claimed off waivers by the Texans in 2002 and spent the last three seasons with them. He played in all 16 games last year as a backup but didn't start any. In his career, he has played in 94 games and started 32. He had eight tackles and one sack but no interceptions last year. He also had five tackles on special teams. The Jaguars have been looking for a second-tier cornerback in free agency after cutting Dewayne Washington and Juran Bolden. They felt the top-tier cornerbacks were too expensive and are likely to draft a cornerback in the first or second round. The battle for the second starting cornerback job that was filled by Washington last year is currently wide open. Jacksonville Article Last edited by TEXANS84; 03-31-2005 at 01:08 PM. |

Looks like he could crack the starting lineup for the Jags. He performed pretty well for the Texans, and I wish him luck with the Jaguars (except for when they play the Texans).

Details of the contract, but they messed up and posted the Saints.
-- Jags Sign Wright -- Thu Mar 31, 2005 --from FFMastermind.com ESPN reports the Jacksonville Jaguars added competition for the vacant starting job at right cornerback and bolstered their nickel defensive package by signing free-agent CB Kenny Wright (Saints) to a one-year contract on Thursday. The deal includes a base salary of $540,000, the NFL minimum for a player of Wright's tenure. Wright, who has defended 40 passes in his career, will compete for the opening at right cornerback after Jacksonville released CB Dewayne Washington last month. Wright has not been a full-time starter in the league since his 1999 rookie season with the Vikings, but his size (6-feet-1, 207 pounds) and physical style fit well with the Jaguars scheme. A more likely scenario is that Wright will play the nickel cornerback position. The Jaguars recently released CB Juran Bolden. |

I could've swore he played here last year...He was a really solid player here, but when we signed Sanders and gave Faggins a decent contract, the writing was on the wall...I wish him the best in J-Ville as long as he doesn't beat us or clich a playoff berth for them...

... hope the best for him, maybe he can earn a starting role and then proceed to get pwned by the texans recieving core when we sweep the jags yet again...*goes to take a shower to wash off excessive amounts hubris*...

Jaguars sign ex-Texans CB Wright
NFL.com wire reports JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 31, 2005) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars signed free agent cornerback Kenny Wright to a one-year contract. Wright spent the past three seasons with the Houston Texans, where he served as the team's primary nickel back. He finished with 13 tackles and one sack last season. Wright will enter the competition to replace former cornerback Dewayne Washington, who was cut in early March along with backup Juran Bolden. Wright, fellow free agent Terry Cousin and backup Kiwaukee Thomas are currently in the mix to replace Washington. In 84 career NFL games with Houston and Minnesota, Wright has 267 tackles and four interceptions. http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/JAC/8344866 |

why did they even play the games in 04? Because the Jaguars won 27-0 the last game they played. According to texan logic, that means the Jaguars automatically would win the next games?? that's how it sounds from a lot of you. Very messed up logic.
Us,... underachievers? Weren't you going to finish ahead of us in the division? That's what I kept hearing over and again this entire off season. |
