Default What Happened in Cleveland?

I didn't watch anything but the Houston game yesterday (honey-dos).. barely watched any highlights.

But Cleveland beat the Patriots, how? Is someone hurt? Was Brady off?

I've seen the game is going to be on NFL Replay Tuesday & I plan to watch it.......

Anybody get to see it?

The Browns D is playing pretty damn good lately. Also, Peyton Hillis was unstoppable yesterday. He racked 188 yrds in rushing. And Colt Mcoy is also playing decent football.

I like Foster, but I wanted us to go after Payton Hillis soooo bad.

This. I tried to throw it in every thread that seemed relevent. We should have gone after him when McDaniels was throwing his little fire sale in his first season there. Could have had him cheap too.

Default Re: What Happened in Cleveland?

It appears we have a full fledged QB controversy underway in Cleveland. The fans have apparently fallen for Colt McCoy, and no wonder after his performance and the result of the last three games.

From the local newspaper, the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

Quote:
At quarterback, Cleveland Browns should ride on back of Colt for rest of season: Bill Livingston

Browns coach Eric Mangini keeps his options closer to the vest than Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel, who is known for the garment at Ohio State.

But, despite the postgame reticence of the Browns coach, there is no decision left to make about the identity of the team's starting quarterback for next week and thereafter. It has got to be all Colt, all the time.

First of all, there might be a fan revolt if it were not. Colt McCoy, the rookie third-round draft pick from Texas, is 2-1 as a starter in some very tough venues (at Pittsburgh, at the Superdome in New Orleans) against some very tough opponents (the Steelers and Saints, the past two Super Bowl winners, and the Belichickian Patriots, the Team of the Oughts).

Yet the first thing Mangini said, when asked what McCoy did best after Sunday's 34-14 rout of the Patriots, was "I like the way he managed the game."

"Managing" the game means not losing it with turnovers and keeping down and distance reasonable by avoiding sacks. It is the opposite of a "gunslinger," the type of approach that erroneously convinces someone like Chicago's Jay Cutler that he can throw the ball anywhere, including, quite possibly, through a cornerback.

Derek Anderson was a gunslinger. He put up big numbers against bad teams in the first half of 2007, but then he went back to being Derek Anderson in the big games at season's end as the Browns blew a playoff berth. There were also a couple of big statistical games in losses by Kelly Holcomb, who could tantalize, but not fulfill. There were two blind-luck Hail Mary heaves by Tim Couch. That's about it for quarterback highlights.

McCoy has only been on this job for a month, counting the bye week. But for this Colt, it hardly seems to be his first rodeo. Asked the biggest positive about McCoy, Joe Thomas, the Browns' best player, a three-time Pro Bowler at left offensive tackle, said: "He's very calm in the pocket. He's smart, and he knows the reads. One-two-three [options], nobody open, so he takes off or throws it away. There is no indecision. That means a lot up front. He's not back there, patting the ball, the way you see so many rookies do."

Rookies? Couch was still patting the ball, question marks in his eyes, when he was in his fifth year here.

Had lunch at a bar across from Fenway park during this game and it was pretty hilarious to hear the Pats fan wails every time the Browns scored. I was happy to see the Browns do well, but man those pats fans were so pissed. I will say I dont think I saw anyone leave the bar before we left in the middle of the third.

The Browns gave the Saints offense fits. Absolute fits. I was impressed how well they played - the disguised coverages, brought pressure from different places, mixed up looks in the front 7, etc...

Brees was off all game long.

They forced turnovers and capitalized.

They also used some trick plays and special teams fakes to get good field position.

The Browns offense really only had 1 drive worth nothing against the Saints D but they didn't turn the ball over.

They didn't need to, though - their defense won the game.

Props to them.

They've always been, for me, an easy AFC team to root for

Actually there's something implied in that saying which is maybe its real meaning: all he does is "not lose" the game the way the hotdog gunslingers often do.

10 Reasons Why Colt McCoy May Never Play a Down for the Browns
Colt McCoy is on the verge of being released, according to a report by the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Could the third-round draft darling really never play for the Cleveland Browns?

There is increasing speculation that McCoy's career might continue at another destination in the NFL or as a member of the Browns' practice squad.

Publicly, the Browns have had nothing but praise for McCoy. But according to the Plain Dealer report, the team has been very unimpressed by his play throughout training camp and the preseason.

Here's a look at 10 reasons why Colt McCoy might never play a single down for the Browns.

Default Re: What Happened in Cleveland?

Before Colt was forced into the starting lineup, the Browns played Delhomme and Wallace at QB. The strategy (or lack there of), seemed to be to pass the ball way too often with little to no play action passes and empty backfield sets. Due to Colt being inserted, the Browns seem to have made a more determined effort to run the ball and protect Colt.

Colt has performed admirably. He is very accurate, has good touch, scrambles out of trouble, and has yet to make the stupid mistakes.

The key to all this has been the performance of Peyton Hillis and the offensive line. Mangini has built this team from the O-line out. He drafted Mack at center with the trade down with the Jets and drafted and traded for additional maulers on the O-line. He seems to have followed the same blueprint he used to build the O-lines when he was with the Jets.

Sprinkle in some trick plays and desperation 4th down conversions, and the Browns have surprised a couple pretty good teams.

If memory serves me correct, the Browns also recieved a 6th round pick in 2011 and a conditional pick (6th round minimum) in 2012.

The Browns have a history of poor drafts and bad trades--so far this one looks good.

The Texans look to be on their way to playing their way off of KEYE for another season. I am sure there will be a good mix of Browns and Titans games soon.

It's crazy ironic that when VY and Colt take over their teams immediately start winning despite how well or bad they play.

With Colt it is pretty funny and I would get a kick out of VY if he wasn't playing for the Titans.

I gotta tell you. ALL of my Denver friends wanted Denver to Keep Hillis. I really wanted us to get Hillis. My Buddy in DC wanted the Redksins to retain Hillis. In short, the fans wanted him, the teams didn't.
