Default Texans defense by the numbers

Yeah, we all know it's bad. Just a deeper look into things

Quote:
Through 6 games this season, the Texans defense looks like this (NFL ranking in parenthesis):

Points Allowed: 27.8 (31st)
Total Yards Allowed: 410.5 (31st)
Rush Yds Allowed: 104.3 (13th)
Pass Yds Allowed: 306.2 (32nd)

Pretty terrible, huh? Here are some other numbers to grind on:

Total yards allowed on all first downs:142 (32nd)
3rd downs allowed: 38.7% (16th)
Completion % against: 68.9 (31st)
Yards allowed per pass attempt: 8.2 (31st)
Pass TDs allowed:14 (32nd)
Interceptions: 4 (Tied with 21-27)
Sacks: 10 (Tied with 22-24)
QB Rating against: 106.3 (30th)

Let's take a look at each QB the Texans have faced and how the Texans did against that QB and how that QB did against all of the other teams they have faced minus their game stats against the Texans.

* The passing yardage for "season" is total passing yds minus sack yds and does not include their game against the Texans. The passing yardage for the Texans game is also figured with passing yards minus sack yardage. The QB Rating does include the Texans game.

Peyton Manning
Season: 293 yards / 10 TDs / 2 INTs / QB Rtg - 103.4 / 66.5% comp.
vs HOU: 419 yards / 3 TDs / 0 INTs / QB Rtg - 109.8 / 70.2% comp.

Donovan McNabb
Season: 212 yards / 4 TDs / 5 INTs / QB Rtg - 78.8 / 54.8%
vs HOU: 403 yards / 1 TDs / 0 INTs / QB Rtg - 119.0 / 73.7%

Tony Romo
Season: 310 yards / 8 TDs / 7 INTs / QB Rtg - 93.6 / 68%
vs HOU: 284 yards / 2 TDs / 0 INTs / QB Rtg - 127.6 / 76.7%

Bruce Gradkowski
Season: 170 yards / 2 TDs / 2 INTs / QB Rtg - 71.1 / 46%
vs HOU: 245 yards / 2 TDs / 2 INTs / QB Rtg - 78.8 / 61.5%

Eli Manning
Season: 222 yards / 7 TDs / 6 INTs / QB Rtg - 86.2 / 64.8%
vs HOU: 297 yards / 3 TDs / 2 INTs / QB Rtg - 89.1 / 64.3%

Matt Cassel
Season: 158 yards / 4 TDs / 3 INTs / QB Rtg - 84.5 / 54%
vs HOU: 189 yards / 3 TDs / 0 INTs / QB Rtg - 122.9 / 69%

* On average, QBs can expect to throw for 78.6 more yards per game when they get to play the Texans. The median yardage allowed per game over the opposing team's passing yardage is 75 yards.

* On average, QBs can expect to complete passes at a 10.2% higher clip than when they aren't playing the Texans.

* The Texans have held only one team below their average total passing yards per game, and that team was Dallas. Oh, and by "held", I mean gave up the highest QB Rating and completion percentage of any QB they've faced all season to Tony Romo and didn't face much passing in the second half since the Cowboys had the game locked down.

* Every single QB on the list had a higher QB Rating against the Texans than their season average.

* The Texans have give up 2 passing TDs or more in five of their six games this year and only have interceptions in two of their six games.

It is impossible for the Texans to make the playoffs if their secondary and overall defense continues to play this poorly. I'm glad they are 4-2, but we all know they were a 4th and 10 completion for a TD and dramatic comeback in the 4th quarter away from losing the Redskins and Chiefs games. Hopefully those games will be deciding factors in a playoff run, but right now they simply serve to show how lucky the Texans are to be 4-2 despite their poor showing against the pass and how tenuous that record really is.

A couple of things, Gradkowski's numbers are skewed. Looks like they included yardage in games he did not play the majority of. If you include only his complete games, it doesn't look that bad.

Second, we suck, but we did get two defensive stops to keep the "Montana" look alike from ruining our second come from behind victory.

Our offense is even better than our D is bad and we play under a salary cap. I know that doesn't justify everything, but we do have to take it into consideration. It's hard to complain when you're 4-2 and you've beaten the Colts and the Chiefs, but I do see harder times coming (with our ridiculously tough schedule) if we don't get our defensive act together.

A quote from Texans Bull Blog about the Chiefs game:

Tackling! Uggh. We were a great tackling team last year. The worst tacklers on the team were Dunta Robinson and Jacques Reeves. They are gone. But now, all of a sudden, we can’t tackle anyone. I don’t get it. Can someone please explain this to me? Even with the poor coverage, if we simply wrapped up and tackled like we did last season, the Chiefs score 17 points instead of 28 and things look much better on defense.

You know I like stats... But we've got a problem on offense. We had 5 possessions in the first half yesterday, scored on one. We went three & out on the other four.

We opened the second half with a 3 & out.

We never got started against the Giants or the Cowboys. We couldn't get the passing game started in Indy, not till the 4th qtr against Washington.

None of those teams are as defensively complete as the Jets, San Diego, or Baltimore.

Defense (or the lack therof) will eventually be our downfall in the playoffs.

Try to think about when we scored all those points, or made up all those yards.

The points were already on the board, the defense had already failed, I'll give you that.

But how many times had the offense been given the ball just to give it right back? either go 3 & out, or fumble, or throw an INT?

We can look at the score & the stats, and say, hm... the defense is bad, the offense rules. But that is so far from reality.

Indy, we couldn't get the passing game going. Washington, it took 3 Qtrs to get the offense going. Yeah, the defense was struggling, holding on for dear life, waiting for the offense to catch up. The defense shut Washington down in the second half, which led to the "great offensive comeback"

Same thing happened in Dallas, except the O never got started. Oakland..... Good game for the offense, bad game for the defense.

Giants, offense still never got into the game. The only real score they got, was because we intercepted the ball & put them in the red zone.

Chiefs.... The offense scored on one of 5 possessions, going 3 & out the other 4. The defense tried.. they held the Chiefs to 7 points up to the last 2:00 of the first half. Offense couldn't even run out the clock & take a 7-7 game to half-time.

If our offense would participate in the first Qtr, our defense wouldn't look half as bad.
