To Blitz or Not to Blitz

Charlie Pallilo on Radio 790 just gave a very interesting stat.

*When the Texans didn't blitz, the opposing QB had a 75.5% completion rate.

*When the Texans did blitz, the opposing QB had a completion rate of 52.5%.

I look at these numbers and it affirms my feeling of how bad our secondary really is and how bad our front 4 rush really is.

It's been said that if you live by the blitz, you die by the blitz. But in the case of the Texans, it could end up a slower less painful path to death, one that may even give them some extra time to find that miracle curative avenue to resuscitation.

I don't know how you can make those judgements without knowing how the rest of the leauge fairs.

I would lkike to see a break down on how many of those were caught by TE's & RB's. I'm thinking quite a few. A bunch of the poor pass defense is on the linebackers.

More importantly, down and distance has to play a role.

If we blitz we might get killed with a quick strike. If we don't blitz we "die the death of a thousand cuts" as QBs toss short to the backs WRs and to the TE at will. If we die quick, perhaps we save time for our offense to score more than the other guy can (something we usually have been able to do). Plus, ya never know, we might actually smack around the other QB and have him do something stupid. What the heck, it sounds better to me than standing around with our thumbs up our butts.

Pressure is where its at. They cant generate natural pressure and the db cant hold coverage. Philly and pitts has been doing it for years with avg cb play.

I'm thinking the opposite. Blitzing leaves less time for the receivers to uncover. Where the young corners are having problems are with WRs giving them double moves, or just not understanding their responsibilities in zone coverage. If the blitz can get to the QB and force a throw, that has to help these guys.

I think we need to get more of our secondary players involved in the blitzes. Glover Quin looked good on the one blitz I saw him on. Pollard generally looks good when we send him, & I've got to imagine Jackson would look good as well.

When we blitz, it's the LBs more than 95% of the time (I'm pulling that number out of my butt, but I think it's pretty close).

However, if we send CBs & Safeties, the LBs have got to cover & I think that is our biggest problem.

All I know is that we better see a heck of alot more blitzing this Sunday than we saw last Sunday otherwise expect to see another Peyton look alike.

I'm not sure why Pollard isn't sent out in the blitz. I know it didn't work out well for some guy named Brady when he did.

I agree that standing playing on our heels has thus far not worked. Why not mix it up and send a LB or corner or SS in on passing downs. Put our corners up on the line to slow down the routes and give our blitz time to get in the backfield.

The soft zone with a 4 man rush is not working for us. I'd rather lose knowing we were aggressive. The "prevent" defense, after all, only prevents winning.

Also, we need to stay away from the soft zone when we blitz. It doesn't do any good to blitz when our CB's are playing a soft zone, and leaving easy targets for the QB to dump it to.

From the breakdown of our offense I do not believe we can determine when the passing down and when the running downs are. The Giants knew exactly when we ran and exactly when we passed, if a coach who is suposed to be an offensive Guru gets Read like the bible then how can this coach get his DC to determine when the chiefs are fixin to trick us. Just saying

losing Connor Barwin has crippled the Texans pass rush. the Texans have tried to counter hitting the free agent market with multiple players, Adewale Ogunleye, Ryan Denney & now Mark Anderson (we'll see tomorrow if he can regain his rookie form) without additional pressure. Cushing is now back so here is how I would address this situation. On 2nd or 3rd & longs I would drop Cushing back into Barwins role, let him stand-up & read the QB. Texans go to a three man front, Mario, Amobi/Earl Smith (best downhill pass rushers). Then adjust the LB's accordingly for run support & coverage underneath, DeMeco, Sharpton (healthy) & Diles then have my corners Quinn, Jackson press man while keeping Pollard intermediate/Nolan deep to support the corners. that is the plan man to improve the pass rush, keep solid run support & pass coverage. You can get more aggressive based on how effective this alingment is by bringing McCain to cover for Quinn & let him drop into the box replace a LB & come in on a blitz package.

Exactly, man 'em up tight and punch the QB in the mouth.

I would love to see them get creative. I get tired of our exotic blitz package being the Mike up the middle.

Cushing got some good pressure last week. Even after four weeks out he was generating more heat than what we've seen so far. And what happened to the corner blitzes we saw some of during the preseason?

I thought Cushing did a good job last week when he blitzed...He hit the QB a couple of times and caused some hurried throws...

I'd like to see what Mark Anderson can do for us...After looking at that signing a little more, I think he is a guy that can come in and really help us...

He has not lost any explosiveness from what I've seen, so I think a change of scenery and the fact that we are putting him back in his old role as a pass rush specialist will really help him out...

I'm thinking he can be this years Pollard...

I like the fact that his "buddy" Demeco Ryans pretty vouched for him. He should be feeling thankful to Demeco, and have a sense of not wanting to let him down.
