Sour Play of the Week: Jersey/A leading the Houston Texans 14-0, the New York Giants faced third-and-4 on the Moo Cows' 12. Eli Manning is starting to look for Hakeem Nicks at the goal line and had already thrown him a short touchdown pass. Nickelback Brice McCain lined up across from Nicks in a weird "inside technique" stance, facing the center of the field. Corners who line up this way are conceding the sideline but being sure of stopping a down-and-in.
At least that's what's supposed to happen. Nicks ran a down-and-in -- and McCain just stood there watching as the uncovered Nicks scored a touchdown. There was no one else in McCain's area for him to worry about. When you line up specifically to stop a down-and-in, then stand watching that very pattern run for a touchdown, that is seriously sour. Nicks was covered by no one despite Houston dropping seven into coverage against four receivers and having only a small area of the field to defend. The Texans are last in the league in passing defense. LINK

Yeah Pollard bit on that play, but McCain should have squeezed Nicks a little bit more...
As the writer said, there was no one else even around...Makes no sense to just stand there covering air... If McCain would have squeezed the WR more into the next persons zone he would have been closer to make a play...But he didn't do that, so we end up sucking...again... |

So, the whole D was SUPPOSED to be covering Nicks on that play.

I can see why the fans would boo, but I personally agree with a field goal in that situation. We were being lambasted 21-0 and often if you can just put points up it eases the tension some. Had we gone for it and missed it the opposite would be said there in that quote...and I think that we would have been beaten down even more so. |

Down 21-0, 3 points does very little. We were getting shellacked by that time, and had been moving the ball. Had we gone for it and gotten it, it could have changed the entire game. Kicking a FG is a mental victory for the NYG

I'm leaning towards DB coach. We have had many players come and go in this secondary, almost none of which have had any success. Even guys who have great first years go on to suck after our DB coach has had him for a year.

This is only David Gibbs second year as secondary coach.. Last year, he took late round rookies Brice McCain and Glover Quin and turned them into productive CBs. I can't build a case that Gibbs has done a great job here... it's simply too early to tell. However, it is way too early to suggest replacing him. And, it wasn't responsible for the failures of guys like Dunta, Bennett, etc... that was the previous guy.

The Chicago bears who currently rank #4 in the entire NFL in QB rating allowed at 67 (we rank 3rd to last at 104) The Chicago bears who currently rank 1st having only allowed 2 passing TDs all year (we rank next to last with 11) They are also 2nd allowing only 6 yards per attempt Just wanted to make sure it was the same guy ![]() Im starting to think its not the DB coach, but more the scheme from the d coordinator or the players
