Agents and paying players

This Sports Illustrated article was really, really interesting. It is basically a tell-all account of an agent, including specific mentions of 30+ players that he paid while he was an agent. It's worth the time to read.

The whole thing is worth a read, but here's one of the concluding paragraphs, on why the guy is now speaking.

People should know how the agent business really works, how widespread the inducements to players are and how players have their hands out. It isn't just the big, bad agents making them take money. People think the NFLPA is monitoring agents, but it is mostly powerless. People should also be aware of all that an agent does for his clients. Catering to their needs can be an all-consuming job.

I guess I knew this type of thing went on, but I didn't realize it was as extensive as it is made out to be in the article.

Mike and Mike had the agent on. I didn't hate him. Every time I hear Donaghe (sp) I hate him. (that does not mean I wanna have a beer with the guy).

He addressed part of the article saying that his boss used Mel Kiper - in that his boss would get Mel Kiper introduced to his players and Mel would interview them. He said Mel never said 'use this agent' but Mel was indirectly used and became a marketing tool for the agent (agent says 'hire me, I'll get you ann interview with Mel Kiper').

Mel Kiper then was on Mike and Mike. He rattled off 10 years of draft predictions and where players were picked that had this agent and a few who didn't. Finally he said 'if I got used I don't care I am not changing how I do business, I have friends who are agents.'

I wanted to ask him - wth did I just listen to 10 years of what you predicted these guys at and where they were drafted? My ears are bleeding and it's irrelevant.

An excellent read. the only thing it really changes for me is that I now distrust the honesty of the players as much as I do the Agents.

Ironic that Keyshawn turns out to be "one of the good guys" isn't it?

My favorite part:

If you were a good player at UCLA, I made a run at you. I tried to get can't-miss NFL left tackle prospect Jonathan Ogden as a client, but he wouldn't take my money. He did, however, go with me to a Janet Jackson concert. My girlfriend got two tickets, and I told her, "Sorry, I need those tickets for J.O. He's a big Janet Jackson fan." Instead of going to the concert with my girlfriend, I went with a 6'9" guy who weighed more than 300 pounds and who screamed "Janet!" the whole night like a teenage girl.

That was an awsome read! Really intresting how everything works, but I could have told you almost everyone is only looking out for numero 1. Much respect for those who declined money and that comes from great parents raising there children with principle and character.

This guy is just another Canseco to me. Now that he's probably not making money representing players, he tries to make a buck off of selling his story and experiences and he'll probably end up bringing other people down in the process.

It was ironic that some players that have been accused of being bad guys and selfish players were the ones that didn't take any money.

The truth is the truth, no matter who tells it. I never understand how people can condemn others for telling the truth, regardless of the motivation. If this guy is as truthful as Canseco, then some people need to be brought down. Time will tell.

He's not telling the truth to be noble. He's telling "his truth" to make a buck and to become more famous in the public eye. Where was this truth when he was trying to partake in all of this?? Where was it then? Oh, so now it's alright to talk about this stuff when he's not going to be involved in it anymore? Give me a break. This is a cokroach mentality of a weasel. I respect nothing from people like this. And I don't ever believe that a guy like this or Canseco ever tells the whole truth. They just tell the bits and pieces that they want to tell that they feel will catch the right attention for them. It's a completely selfish mentality that only the lowest forms of man resort to.

Some of the most profound truths in the history of mankind have been revealed without any intention of nobility. So you don't respect the guy. So what? That doesn't make the truth any less true, nor should you want the truth to be hidden. I'd rather a weasel reveal the truth than all these "noble" people involved keep hiding it.

I don't have to respect the messenger to respect the message. I guess it's that simple.
