NEW YORK (AP) The 32 compensatory draft choices in the 2005 NFL Draft (April 23-24) awarded to teams that suffered a net loss of certain quality unrestricted free agents last year. The compensatory choices will supplement the 223 choices in the regular seven rounds of the draft, with picks positioned within the fourth through the seventh rounds based on the value of the free agent lost. So let me see if I got this straight. The compensatory picks are awarded in the '05 Draft for players that were lost after the '03 season?

I realize the date has been updated. But look at the list of "players lost". Dallas lost Edwards and Ekuban after the '03 season...not this past season. The other teams have players that were lost/traded/released after the '03 season as well.

That's correct. These comp picks cover the player movement for the '04 free agency period.

Compensatory picks are awarded on the basis of the net number of free agents a team loses the previous season. The Colts were a net minus-2 after losing starting linebacker Marcus Washington and starting cornerback David Macklin while signing no applicable free agent.

Washington signed with the Washington Redskins and proved to be one of the best free agent acquisitions throughout the league. He started all 16 games and was voted to his first Pro Bowl.

"I would like to know how they applied (the system) to Marcus," Polian said.

Coach Tony Dungy also was befuddled by the apparent slight. He chose his words carefully when considering the Colts' compensation.

"Just say I don't understand the formula," Dungy said. "When you lose a guy that goes to another team and plays every play and goes to the Pro Bowl, and you don't sign anyone, I just don't understand it."
