Default Redskins make full use of "questionable" injury report

Redskins make full use of "questionable" designation

Last week, the Redskins listed quarterback Donovan McNabb as questionable for the Week One Sunday night game against the Cowboys. Though the official designation meant that he had a 50-50 chance of playing, McNabb played. And everyone knew he was going to play.

This week, McNabb again is listed as questionable, even though he fully participated in practice all week -- and he undoubtedly will play.

Also questionable are running back Clinton Portis (wrist), defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth (ankle), and linebacker Perry Riley (foot).

So are these other players truly questionable, or are they "McNabb questionable"? The reality is that the overuse of the questionable label allows a team to load the category up with players who will definitely be playing -- and then to shut down one or more of the questionable players on game day without consequence.

The proper designation for McNabb, and possibly one or more of the other questionable players, would be probable. But if the players who will definitely play are listed as probable, it'll be easier to figure out which of the truly questionable players may not actually play.

Through two weeks, the Redskins have listed no one as probable. At some point, they probably will hear from the league office.

Then again, based on the extent to which the injury-reporting rules have been enforced in the past, it's probably more accurate to say that it's questionable.

As to the Texans, nine players are probable, which technically means that there's a virtual certainty they'll be available for normal duty: safety Dominique Barber (shoulder), tackle Duane Brown (hamstring), tight end Owen Daniels (knee), fullback Vonta Leach (neck), kicker Neil Rackers (illness), defensive end Antonio Smith (back), receiver Kevin Walter (hip), defensive end Mario Williams (groin), and safety Eugene Wilson (back).

Questionable are cornerback Antwuan Molden (ankle), and defensive tackle Amobi Okoye (ankle).

And if all eleven players had been listed as probable, it would have been much harder for the Redskins to spot the two who truly may not be suiting up.
Looks like the Texans are playing it by the rules.
