Default Texan tailgaters are the problem!

Ok, first I will say I did not hear all of the discussion this morning on 610 AM radio with Mark and John Lopez so correct me if you heard it and I got wrong impression. The topic seemed to be fans being in their seats @ Reliant before kick off rather than so many getting there late. The sports mouths were saying a lot of people party in the parking lot enjoying that experience and show up inside late to the game. Seems this really bums out the players. They had comments by Eric Winston also. Also mentioned were people who do not figure in the time it takes to get from car to the seat correctly.

So I think our losses over the years are directed at you guys more so than the players I am no longer as worried about our RBs, DTs, CBs or O line but on you party going folks not being there on time to support our team. You know who you are.

Houstonians are historically late arrivals. This isn't something new with the Texans. I think the only fans more notorious for arriving late than Houston fans are LA Laker fans.

My Dad and I had season tickets for the Oilers back when I was in high school and I don't remember there being that many empty seats come game time when Warren and the boys were rolling. Maybe I'm wrong, its been a few years.

Even though it looks bad seeing so many empty seats at game time, I have developed more of a live and let live attitude. What annoys me personally is when some don't get enough of the tailgaiting experience outside and want to come in and bounce beach balls around while I'm engaged in watching the game. Then they have the nerve to boo if you don't want to play along.

Is this only in Houston ?

Is this more of a problem with teams that have not been real good ?

Is this an indication of folks who are more fans of a party than football ?

I don't know as my only experience has been here and Dallas. I had an interesting experience about two or maybe three years ago at Texas Stadium for the Thanksgiving Day game. I was about 40 or so minutes early getting to the gate, I didn't see many people. I walked up and asked for a program and the vendor said wait, I need to get some more. Ok, strange, but I had time. After getting the program, I walked to team merchandising area and looked at the merchandise. Then I went to the food stand and made purchases and headed for my seat. I walked into the seating area, and boy was I embarrassed. The place was packed and I had to pass by at least eight people to get to my seat. It was cold that day, so I thought perhaps that was a good reason. However, since then the stadiums have been at least 80 percent full at kickoff.

Last year I took a picture of the video screen midways through the 4th quarter showing attendance of over 92K people at the game against the Eagles. We were significantly ahead by then, and the stadium appeared to still have over 90K. I was so impressed I use the picture as my wall paper on my home computer.

Give fans a great time like the Moon-led Oilers and I have little doubt that the majority of them will be in their seats at kickoff.

I'm not justifying it, as I'm a kickoff-to-0:00 fan (I'm there for the game and tailgating is just a supplement), but many folks are enjoying the ReliantWorld GameDay ExperienceŽ and football is just an aspect of it.

As a fan , nothing is worse than the " get to your seat 20 minutes late guy " who decides he needs to get to his seat on 4th and 1 . Then 10 minutes later he realizes he's got to pee and get some nachos . This reeks of a casual fan who really isn't in to the game .

I didn't bail! I'm just broke. Take him to the nearest bank!...

I still reside in Gridiron at least once a season, perhaps twice if I'm really lucky.

Oh, I know, bro'.

She's a doll, but crazy. Where my boys were shy and reserved, she wants to go head first down our stairs. I think she believes that gravity does not apply to her.

Absolutely! Winning changes everything! If you win, fans are in their seats. 8 & 8 is ok, 9-7 is decent, but if you post some 10-6 seasons or better, you will have fans there early! The Saints couldn't do it until the last couple years. This goes for most teams. Why would people show up early to see a 6-10 or 7-9 team? Of course, the die hards will be there. I am in my seat at least 10-15 minutes before kick-off! Since 2002!

Probems with empty seats, in no apparent order:

1. rich people who don't care
2. casual fans who don't care
3. mistiming how long it takes from the car to your seat
4. forgetting to allow for time to take your tailgate down
5. partying too hard and forgetting to care about kickoff
6. the team has never been to the playoffs

I lock up anything worth stealing. cover the food, slide everything under the tent and bring the tent down to the ground (in case of wind or rain while we are inside).

That can take a good 15 minutes....

That said - 1 hour prior we start getting into kickoff mode. We usually make it in to see the girls dance.
