Tivy had a defensive stand at the end of the game and beat San Antonio Madison 39-34

SAN ANTONIO - Defensive coordinator Sean McAuliffe left in the first quarter as his wife delivered a baby, Johnny Manziel set a school record for passing yards and the Tivy defense had a goal line stand as the Antlers knocked off the top-ranked San Antonio area team, Madison, 39-34, at Comalander Stadium on Friday.

Manziel posted video game-like statistics as he completed 41 passes on a school record 75 attempts for 503 yards with no interceptions. The senior quarterback rushed for 78 yards and continually made life miserable for a strung out Madison defense.

"I don't even know what to say," Manziel said. "Battle. It's kind of what the papers made it out to be. I don't even know what the final score was."

In a game that featured two of the most talked about high school football players in the state - Manziel and Madison senior running back Aaron Green - the Tivy defense may have stolen the show with a last-minute goal-line stand. After a pass interference call on Tivy put the ball on its own 5-yard line, Madison was ready to take the lead and win. But an illegal procedure penalty pushed the Mavericks back to the 10-yard line.

As the Tivy football team gathered for a group prayer with Cibolo Steele on Friday at Antler Stadium, Tivy coach Mark Smith, hoarse and looking physically exhausted, said in a soft yell, "You played a great game, it's a shame that someone has to lose."

Luckily for Smith, the losing part wasn't directed at his team. The Antlers answered each long, second half Steele touchdown with one of their own as they took down their second Class 5A school in as many weeks, 54-45.

Tivy plays at Lake Travis this coming weekend. Lake Travis is raned #1 in the state and Tivy is in top 10 (8th on the link at the beginning of the season)

should be a good game.

KERRVILLE - Even Malcolm Brown, the top-ranked running back in the nation, says Kerrville Tivy quarterback Johnny Manziel is playing at a higher level than everybody else right now.

Manziel did it again against Brown and No. 3 Steele on Friday, accounting for 558 yards and eight total touchdowns in a 54-45 victory at Antler Stadium.

“It was crazy - he actually puts up video-game stats every single night,” Brown said. “Johnny is awesome. Everybody knows it.”

Manziel threw for 428 yards and six TDs and rushed for 130 yards and two scores, accounting for all but 14 of Sub-5A No. 1 Tivy's 572 total yards.
