Default Schobel likely done in Buffalo

Quote:
Schobel likely done in Buffalo; looking for trade?

Aaron Schobel has played his entire nine-year career with the Bills, but it doesn't appear that he'll play another down for the franchise. From what we hear, barring a surprising change of heart, the 32-year-old's time in Buffalo is over. Contemplating retirement ever since the 2009 campaign ended, Schobel said that he would be open to returning to the team closer to the beginning of the season and that the decision was in the Bills' hands. Since the club never gave the TCU product any indication that it didn't want him, word is that Buffalo might have denied Schobel's request to skip offseason activities and training camp. With a new 3-4 defense being installed, the Bills might have felt that Schobel, who would have to switch from defensive end to outside linebacker, would not be sufficiently up to speed with the scheme by Week One. It's also possible that the sack artist could be angling for a trade to a Texas team, as he makes his home there.

Well Dallas runs a 3-4 also. So that leaves us as the only 4-3 defense. Schoebel would make a guy like Tim Bulman expendable. Once again, Smith's ability to move inside would be a helpful factor. You gotta like how that side would be loaded up if Schoebel was lined up next to Smith, and I believe Cushing also rushes from that side as well.

The trick is determining if you can get the same production from Barwin. However, if Smith or Barwin were to get injured what do we have after that?

Barwin standing up and rushing from the outside on a passing down with Smith inside, Schobel outside, Okoye/Mitchell inside, MW outside..

I don't think it's that Buffalo doesn't want him, he doesn't want Buffalo. And he thrived under Kollar and would be a terrific rotational player.

I would trade one of the surplus at DE (Bulman) or WR (A.Davis) and a 4th rd pick for Schobel..

10 sacks who not named Mario has ever had 10 sacks in a season?

Bill Kollar could give us an edge as well. He would be a nice addition for a year or two at least. Double digit sacks last year and he would get to play opposite Mario although almost certainly in a situational role. The only downside is he would probably take a lot of snaps from Barwin. Still, he makes us better this season so I would love it.

He would do great work for us. But depending on the price it would be tough to justify adding him to arguably the deepest unit on defense.

I guess you could move Smith inside full time, but then you risk the wear and tear from being an undersized DT reducing Smith's performance. Schobel would definitely help with the pass rush though...

Might even teach Mario a trick or two and would definitely qualify as a "quality vet" (which we need in a bad way).

LOL @ there not being room for him.

This is a team that has struggled to get sacks...Having him as a rotational player, and pass rush specialist would be awesome. I don't think we are in the position where we can turn down production on the D-line...Unless the price is just too steep.

I hate to part with Bulman. He's a guy that I would like to see get more playing time because he puts in the effort and isn't a lazy bum like Okoye. Plus, I don't think he fits Buffalo's 4-3 scheme. I would probably trade Andre Davis or some defensive player like Kevin Bentley and maybe a draft pick.

If Brisiel comes back healthy I would trade Studdard,A.Davis and a pick for Schobel.

I have followed the whole Schobel clan because they are from Columbus and when they were babies my wife would babysit them. I eat at thier restaurant and have enjoyed meeting them at my relatives weddings. I am sad to see him go, I thoink he still has some left in his tank, and a Texas homecoming would be cool, then he could retire a Texan.

T4E, no offense, but I pray GK & RSmith do not think this way. I pray Kollar is screaming in somebodies ear right now. Schobel is a quality vet. His 10 sacks are a lot like Mario's, he's not getting much help. I know we spent a lot of money on Antonio Smith, and I do like this guys motor, but he's just not finishing. I would start Shobel on the right side, and rotate him and Barwin. On the Left, I would start Mario and rotate Antonio.

Bulman, another great guy, but he's got to go, if we can pick up Schobel.
Or, you can cut a guy like Nading or Jamison if you value their youth (only 2 years compared to Bulman).

I don't know what the real situation is with Schobel and the Bills, but if they really are mutually open to a parting of the ways, I would think a trade could be done without giving up too much on the Texans part.

As to whether it's a good idea, I think the concept that we should tread lightly because we already have Barwin and Antionio Smith is just silly. If he makes our pass rush better than it currently is, find a way to make it work - regardless of the short term impact on Barwin, or the effect on Smith or whatever. Having too much pass rushing talent is not a danger this team should be overly concerned about right now.

Hopefully, Smith and Kubes give this some serious consideration, and if they believe (as I do) that Schobel's got enough left in the tank to make it worth their while, they tell Bush and Kollar to come up with a creative way to make an acquisition work for us, and pursue this (if there really is anything to pursue that is).

Does he add anything over Barwin? It's one thing to look at 10 sacks but there is another number that is important - in how much play time.

Schobel - 10 sacks on 849 snaps
Barwin - 4.5 sacks on 369 snaps
