USC plans to return Reggie Bush's Heisman Trophy

It appears USC is officially divorcing itself from Saints RB Reggie Bush, the former tailback who won a Heisman Trophy for the Trojans but brought discredit upon the program, culminating with severe NCAA sanctions.

This from a memo sent by the school's president-elect:

The Trojan family honors and respects the USC sporting careers of those persons whose actions did not compromise their athletic program or the opportunities of future USC student-athletes. Accordingly, I have instructed the senior vice president for administration to remove athletic jerseys and murals displayed in recognition of (former basketball star) O.J. Mayo and Reggie Bush by mid-August -- before the incoming class of students moves on campus -- from Heritage Hall, the Galen Center and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The university also will return Mr. Bush's 2005 Heisman Trophy to the Heisman Trophy Trust in August.

Too lazy this morning to find the other thread. But, aren't they talking about un-retiring Bush's jersey too?

I don't know if they are going to un-retire the number. But they are going to remove all memorabilia of his from display.

Reggie Bush failed to show today for a pre-scheduled live, online videochat

The chat, scheduled to be held on Eastbay.com, was not canceled in advance and moderators assured chat participants that Bush would show up at any moment.

One hour after the chat was to begin, Adidas released the following statement to the media: “Unfortunately we had to reschedule our online chat with Reggie Bush. We’re working with Reggie and his team to reschedule.”

Earlier today USC announced that it was “revoking” Bush’s Heisman Trophy award and returning its copy of the trophy to the Heisman Trust.

USC was not required to do so by the NCAA, but school President-elect Max Nikias made the unprecedented announcement Tuesday while also introducing new school athletic director Pat Haden.

The Heisman Trophy Trust’s governing board meets July 27 and is expected to rule on what to do with Bush’s trophy at that time. 2005 Heisman runner-up Vince Young has reportedly said that he would not take the trophy if offered.

Before Bush blew off the scheduled online chat, USC Rivals Site USCFootball.com reported that Haden had decided to “unretire” Bush’s #5. [link]

The new USC AD also expressed full support of Nikias’ move to strip Bush of college football’s most prestigious award on ESPN-TV before Bush’s prescheduled web video appearance.

I honestly think that Bush should be totally stripped of the award by the Heisman group, but not VY or anybody else should replace Bush.
The 2005 Heisman award should be permanently vacated, which would be more than a symbolic gesture as it would serve as a caveat to schools in the future to make a real effort to prohibit the kind of improprieties that occured at USC with Bush instead of just turning a blind-eye to such activities.
We'll see if the Heisman group is interested in making their own statement about cleaning up collegiate sports ?

I agree. Because all that might happen is that the NEW guy ends up havig some sort of scandal, which means you have to pass it onto the 3rd place winner.

Just vacate the thing. Call it good. Over and done with. Chalk it up to a bad year.

And hey, maybe this is a good time for them to even consider just doing away with the awards completely? What's the purpose of the award? It's an arbitrary thing, based on opinions.

The trophy that matters is your conference trophy and your bowl trophy. Team trophies based on team achievements. As dirty as Bush was, his whole team wasn't dirty...and it took the whole team to help the dirty guy (Bush) do what he did. I think that's why I favor the team-oriented trophies.

Ron Dayne. Didn't HE win the Heisman Trophy? And let's see how that worked out. It didn't. Maybe the individual honors are past their prime.
