DEA investigating Chargers, Padres

They're evidently checking for the teams' adulterated Tylenol Extra-Strength back room stock.

Doctors affiliated with the Chargers and Padres are under review by the Drug Enforcement Administration in an attempt to “verify the correctness” of their controlled substance inventories and records.

“The physicians under review are affiliated with the San Diego Chargers and San Diego Padres organizations,” the DEA said in a statement.

“Currently, there are no administrative charges, criminal charges or indictments pending for any of the physicians or pharmacies where the warrants were served.”

The DEA today served 10 administrative inspection warrants issued within San Diego County as part of an ongoing investigation.

Physicians and pharmacies are required to keep complete and accurate records of all controlled substances received, prescribed, dispensed, purchased, delivered or otherwise disposed of, according to the law.

The Chargers said no official was immediately available to comment on the case. The Padres said they were looking into it.

The DEA didn’t immediately respond to further questions about the situation. An administrative inspection warrant requires a judge’s approval after showing probable cause with a “valid public interest” in the effective enforcement of the Controlled Substance Act.

Last month, Chargers safety Kevin Ellison was arrested and charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance after being stopped for speeding in Redondo Beach . Police said he had 100 Vicodin in his car. He recently was cut by the Chargers. and signed with the Seattle Seahawks.

Ellisons agent said last month that Ellison “thought it was a good idea to get enough pain killers to last the season. They were for him to use because of his knee surgery.”

Their facility in Puerto Rico produced these products that led to consumers detecting strange odors from the bottles and then becoming sick by tainted pills. The problems were linked to the presence of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA), which results from the breakdown of a chemical in wood pallets used to transport and store packaging materials for the drugs. Evidently the makers of Tylenol knew that there was a problem for about 1 1/2 yrs before they acted on it. Their medication produced after the Jan. 15 recall date should fine. It is a very useful drug, especially for those with significant stomach sensitivities to most pain and anti-inflammatory drugs such as Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Aspirin, Celebrex, Naprosyn, etc.
