Do we need a back up QB ?

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune notes that rookie Joe Webb received second team snaps ahead of Rosenfels at both mandatory minicamp practices on Saturday. Rosenfels received all of two snaps at both the morning and afternoon practices. Webb, meanwhile, threw more than 20 passes on the day with the No. 2 team offense.

If Orlovsky falls on his face in camp, I really, really want the Texans to reacquire Rosenfels. Never a Rosenfels-over-Schaub guy. At all. And yes, I do remember the Rosencopter (did Kaiser Toro coin that term?). But I believe Sage is the perfect backup for this team.

When I first read this piece, that's the exact same thing that I was thinking. If Orlovsky doesn't show "IT" in preseason, Rosenfels is an instant plug in. Whether you keep on replaying the "Rosencopter" image in your mind or not, Rosenfels has brought us the most piece of mind of any backup QB in Texans history.

Funny, in mid May, the following appeared in context to Favre returning:

"You can't assume anything in this league," Rosenfels told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "One thing you can count on in this league is change and you never know what's going to happen."

Stranger things have happened, but Rosenfels' statement, although directed to himself, holds just as true for the Texans possibly entertaining his return.

I've never been a Rosenfels hater, but I also thought the support he got at some points to supplant Schaub at starter was ridiculous.

The fact that he has apparently been soundly beaten out by Tarvaris Jackson, and is now losing reps to a rookie WR who's been converted to QB has to say something.

I doubt Smithiak is in the business of rehashing ex Texan QB's. Even Sage, who I agree is an easy fit. It generates no value. The beauty of snatching up a guy like Orlovsky is he can tutor under Kubiak (and Schaub) and be worth a decent mid round draft pick just because he's been under the tutiliage of GK for a few years. Rosenfelds doesn't offer thank kind of payoff (at least not twice). He already has once. I think that's the system. Orlovsky could be a long term backup but I doubt it. I think until Schaub can play 16-19 games a year consistently for a few years in a row we'll always maintain a moderately high profile backup but I think it will always be a younger QB that we can move out later.

Injuries can change everything though. Don't forget this team was one Rosenfels injury away from Craig Nall taking snaps at QB once upon a time, you could be a lot worse off than Sage. If Dan-O or Booty come down with a preseason injury we'll be fortunate to find someone of Sage's caliber for the backup job.

I didn't ever think that Sage would do as well in the Vikings offense. The Vikings do fall onto the play action often. But they had a poor OL who does not run the ZBS. Favre gets rid of the ball in a flash. And despite that, he was sacked 34 times in the regular season and 3 times in the postseason. This contrasts to Schaub's 25 in the regular season. At least the ZBS (even though running at very basic level last year, not fine tuned) coordinated with Schaub's own abilities to run a commendable pass action scheme. With Schaub left totally to his own with last year's Vikings' OL talentless and discoordinated performance, I doubt if he would be given any more consideration by Childress for an opportunity to take over the #1 spot anymore than Sage was. This year, with the loss of Taylor who was a major part of their play action planning (even though they drafted Gebhart who has no track record of having "hands" in college) and with still significant questions about the OL, the Vikings will continue to pray that Favre, even on his gimpy ankle, continues his role as "savior." They also know that if Favre is no longer standing, they will need a QB with young fresh legs who can run like their ass is on fire. That is not Sage, but could be the reason why they are trying to convert their young WR to backup QB........again, someone who can run like their ass is on fire.

Didnt we end up using that 4th round pick on Anthony Hill. Almost seems like a wash to me at this point.

When healthy, Hill is a good blocking TE. He is just never healthy.

The guy has never been healthy enough with this team to determine if he is a good blocking TE. IMO he may very well get cut this year.

You are entitled to your opinion. But I dont think he gets cut. The only player on the roster that I think could have challenged him was Steve Maneri (and even that was a long shot), and the coaching staff has moved him to OT.

Kubiak likes having a blocking TE, or so people tell me. Hill is, at the moment, the best blocking TE on the roster.

health is such a problem @ TE. is it the nature of position? bad luck? or we still haven't found what we're looking for? in the few snaps I've seen Hill flash as a Texan, he can blast man off scrimmage, shed into open space, soft hands to pluck the ball then a load to bring down, displays above average athletic ability.

back to QB issue, its going to be impossible for the Texans to carry more than one back-up (Orlovsky) there is simply more talent @ other positions of need. then if Schaub gets nicked Dan starts & they call up Sheehan off PS.

Really I don't think it was a bad trade by the Vikings. All they lost was a 4th rounder and at the time Brett Favre was a long shot.

Far as I'm concerned about Sage Rosenfels. As of right now we're looking at what, Craig Nall as our 3rd option at QB? Worst case scenario is we bring him in to compete for the third string spot.

The problem with Sage Rosenfels when he was here is that he had a gunslinger mentality with an arm that couldn't pull it off. It lead to him continually making bad throws into traffic and windows he couldn't fire into.

I think the other problem was he thought he had a shot at the starting QB spot and Kubiak didn't help with comments like "We have starter 1A and 1B". Also Matt Schaub didn't take the reigns at QB. I just don't think its a coincidence Matt started playing much better and kept healthy for a year as the solidified QB.

I think him coming here KNOWING he's going to be a backup bodes well for him and the team. We get a fully competent backup who understands his role as a backup.

It pissed me off how polar the Schaub and Sage became. If you didn't support either one fully you were a hater.
