We need a better center, I don't care how we do it. I'd like to see the Texans hunting one down as their top priority. If he's not there in free agency then in the draft.

If Lehr can't beat Steve for starter, would we waste $ getting Lehr? Other posts indicate good centers can be drafted 4th to 5th round. I think we have McKinney for 2 more years. Would it not be smarter to draft low and work the guy in as Steve's contract closes? If Lehr can be the starter, I agree to get him. But that would be a lot of moolah tied up @ that position.

Matt Lehr, Brandt's under-25 team and Kiper's Top offensive linemen in draft a couple of years ago.
Quote:
OFFENSIVE GUARDS

1. Steve Hutchinson, Michigan -- According to my ratings, Hutchinson has been in an elite group since early in the season, proving to be a model of consistency along the Wolverines' offensive line from his LG position. Along the way, he assisted QB Drew Henson and RB Anthony Thomas, both of whom posted huge numbers during the 2000 campaign. With the ability to operate at RT in the NFL, Hutchinson is a great deal more than just a pure guard. That's why he carries such an elite grade according to my ratings. Drafted by Seattle, first round (17th)

2. Mike Gandy, Notre Dame -- Late-developing standout, really coming into his own over the last two seasons in South Bend. Remember, at the prep level in Texas, he operated at TE and DE. When you combine his solid senior year with his impressive showing at the Senior Bowl practices, it shouldn't surprise anyone if Gandy ends up in the second round of the draft like I'm expecting. Drafted by Chicago, third round (68th)

3. Matt Lehr, Virginia Tech -- Underrated trenchman, operating at both guard spots while also seeing some action at LT in practice. The 6-foot-2, 289-pounder is quick, athletic and tough; in the NFL, he could ultimately land at the center position, showing the ability to anchor a line. Drafted by Dallas, fifth round (137th)

That was years ago...one of my friends who is a cowgirl fan (im ashamed to admit it) basically said that he was very inconsistent and not starting material.

Though i firmly believe that the center position was the weakest last year, i hope we dont overpay this guy the way this 3 team finalist thing looks like we will.

Brandt's piece was last year. Not years ago.

Brandt's under-25 team: Offense

Gil Brandt By Gil Brandt
NFL.com Senior Analyst

(June 29, 2004) -- Did you know there were 40 first-time Pro Bowl players selected to last season's big game on the little island? Never before have so many newcomers, be it selected by the fans or added due to injuries, been a part of the NFL's all-star game.

That says a lot about the young talent in the NFL today. Every year we're treated to a bumper crop of rookies. Some of them come in right away and make an impact, others take a few years to develop before they become great.

Doesn't matter anymore. He is now a Falcon.
Quote:
Atlanta Falcons: The club filled a hole along its offensive line by reaching a three-year deal with former Rams guard Matt Lehr.

Terms of deal weren't available, but it is believed to be worth a little more than $1 million a year. Lehr, whom the Rams claimed off waivers from the Cowboys last season, will fill the void along the offensive line created by Roberto Garza.

Garza was close to reaching an agreement on a contract with the Ravens Thursday but they had concerns about his knee and didn't give him a contract. The Ravens opted to sign Keydrick Vincent of the Steelers to a three-year, $4.64 million contract.

Lehr has the flexibility to play guard for the Falcons and possibly center if they need him in the future. The Texans, Broncos and Falcons were the final three teams trying to convince Lehr to sign a contract.
