I understand your sentiment and can sometimes get a little caught up in hating, or rather being jealous in my case, of the insane amount of money some of these professional athletes demand, but something that not a lot of us realize is that they have a ~5-10 year window in most cases to make their money for the rest of their lives. Too many professional athletes don't have or care about a college degree or will have a degree that once their athletic career is over won't lend itself to any job openings if they need a job. We can blame the players or the system or whatever else, but it's a fact that many players have to earn what they want to live on for the rest of their lives in their short playing days, so can we really blame them for wanting as much as they can get? Of course there will always be publicity appearances and other things like that, but for a high number of players, they simply fade away into the background.

So whenever a contract negotiation comes up with a player demanding an inordinate amount for their worth (in this case, Revis is worth every penny imo) I have to remind myself that after 35 they're living off what they've made in most cases, no matter how little or large that sum may be.

I have no issue with the NFL players making big $. The market is willing to pay that salary at this time so be it. Personally I would like to see people who make society better making big $ like doctors, scientists, etc. I mean when you compare the value of Revis to any type of doctor, clearly, the doctor is worth a lot more to society than some football player.

That said, the average man in the US will make approx $2 million in his lifetime pre taxes. According to various sources the average NFL career is 3.5 years. If a player made league minimum each of those years, they would still make $1.8 million pre taxes. I imagine an athlete would be able to find some job where he could make an additional 200k over the rest of his working life. Lets say a player enters the NFL at 22 and is out at 25. Lets say he works until he is 65 years old. in 40 years he can certainly earn an additional 200k! That translates to earning $5,000 per year! I understand that careers are short, but lets not kid ourselves. Even the average NFL career at league minimum is the equivalent of 90% what the average man will earn in his lifetime!

Sure, the NFL makes a ton of $ off the players but who is the more important factor? If you had the infrastructure in place but XFL talent players, would we still watch? Maybe. If the infrastructure was that of the Arena Football League but we had NFL quality players would we watch?

I don't know. I wonder how much of what we see if based on the player's abilities and how much is based on the infrastructure of the NFL?

The customer is always right & there's no question we watch for the quality of the players. Noone's tuning in to see bud adams flip the bird to fans or to see the pretty stadiums. We watch to see the most talented guys in the world at that position make spectacular plays. Sure, the NFL makes it easy for us & has a nice infrastructure for us to view it week in & out, but look at how fast all the other "competing" leagues folded up.

XFL - lol

Hell the NFL couldn't even sustain NFL Europe & i'm willing to bet noone can name more than 5 players playing in the canadian football league right now. There's really only 1 discernable reason for that...b/c the quality of players aren't as good as the NFL players.

The only reason arena football has lasted as long as it has is b/c it's slightly different from the NFL football. i.e. it's a different product.

That sounds as if they arent capable of getting a regular 9-5 like the majority of Americans ....


Too bad we dont compensate our teachers as well as we do our entertainers ....

the only reason the NFL has the players they do, is because of the money they generate. If (as Awtysst suggests) those markets had the money and infrastructure the NFL has, they could easily compete for the players... and the market. The NFL just has such a huge leap on everybody, that it isn't even close. Remember, ESPN wouldn't even talk about XFL games...

On another note, what do you think of the quality of Canadian, NFL Europe, & XFL players compared to that of the NCAA Football. Surely it has to be on par, if not better... but there is already such an infrastructure in place, these other leagues don't stand a chance.

I wouldn't doubt if a lot of players couldn't hold a 9-5 job, whether it's due to education or other factors. Some examples: Pacman Jones, Chris Johnson, Travis Henry, and Chris Henry (RIP).

Very true, but the reason we don't is that pretty much everyone who wants to can become a teacher. There are certain educational, monetary, and personal background checkpoints, but most every adult in the United States, if they wanted, could eventually become a teacher. However, not everyone can become a professional athlete. They earn their salaries simply because they were blessed with having more elite athletic ability than the general masses. Little fish in an enormous sea or giant, fast, and agile fish in a little pond.

You can't spend 1/6-1/7th of your salary cap on a corner. That's just retarded. I can see a QB getting that kind of jack, but they are the most important position in any sport and the entire offense runs through them.

Revis is a great corner, but he's not better than Aso, and certainly not $5 mil a year better.

To some extent this is true, we saw the USFL woo Herschel Walker & Jim Kelley away b/c they had money to give. But had that league somehow survived, I believe at some point each would've still come back to the NFL mainly b/c it was/is where the elite of the elite play. It's like a high school kid playing against middle school kids. Yeah, you can dominate against them, but don't you want to play against guys your age & height to see how good you really are?

As for your other question, I would say Canadian & NFL Europe players were/are probably on par with NCAA football & a big reason for that is b/c many of those players were/are getting NFL tutelage from guys who played in the NFL or had been coaching in the nfl for a while. Still that doesn't mean that any of those guys were talented enough to compete with the best of the best in the NFL; money & infrastructure or not. Sure you can point to a case here & there where a player from each of those leagues made the leap most notably Kurt Warner & Warren Moon, but the majority of those dudes weren't talented enough to compete in the league.
Case & point, Dave Ragone was a league MVP, World bowl champ for NFL Europe...got here & well we know the rest. Ditto For Danny Wuerfel who by the way had already failed in the NFL.

Obviously i'm talking mainly about NFL Europe & the CFL & being completely dismissive of the XFL b/c lets face it, 99% of those dudes were probably either semi-pro or arena league rejects trying to make a quick buck. You & I probably could've been stars in that league b/c the talent level was that low which is why it folded after just 1 year.

The extension is expected to be finalized "in the next few months." $20 million per year would make Manning the richest player in NFL history, which the Colts have no problem with. The signing bonus could be in the $40M range.

I heard him say on NFL Network that he is not asking for 20 Million and that rumor is a lie. He said he's not trying to get all the money he can because he understands the team needs to try and sign other players, he's just looking for what's fair.
