Willis edged the 2008 professional Butkus Award winner, Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware, who finished with 39 points (six first-place votes). NFL rookie and first-round draft pick Brian Cushing of the Texans finished third with 12 points, followed by Ray Lewis of the Ravens (nine points) and three players tied for fifth place — Karlos Dansby, who recently signed with the Dolphins; Shaun Phillips of the Chargers; and Elvis Dumervil of the Broncos.

Considering he's a rookie, that is very impressive.
We certainly got a winner in Cushing, that's for sure.

Pretty impressive company to be in. He's a beast now but imagine how beastly he'll be with a couple of years of NFL experience.

I hate that guys like Dumervile, Ware, and the 3-4 OLB's get lumped in with true LB'ers. It's a totally different position. Different skill sets.

Dadgum, this is basically his entire season wrapped up in one picture. Knockin the piss outta somebody whilst cramming a few fingers down their throat.
Just hope he can remain somewhat healthy.

Is it facemasking if you reach under someone's facemask and rip their face off?

So Willis, a MLB, won the award, and Ware, a 3-4 OLB placed second. That means that, according to the voters, Cush was the best 4-3 OLB in the league this year.

I don't understand why they aren't grouped with DE's. Didn't the NFLPA try to get 3-4 OLB's the same wage scale as DE's a few years ago?

3-4 OLBs will always be more glamorous than real OLBs. Lame, but true. IMO the reason Cushing didn't get more votes was because of name recognition. The numbers he put up were as good as Willis and you really can't compare them to Ware because they play different positions. And when you consider he had to share with DeMeco, his numbers are even more impressive, Willis doesn't have to share with another pro bowl LB.
Cushing deserved #1 as far as I'm concerned, but I'll take #3.
