Default CB Richard Marshall tendered 2nd rd

NOW THIS IS THE A MOVE I CAN GET BEHIND......RICHARD SMITH DO IT

IF YOU PLAN TO PICK A CORNER IN THE FIRST OR SECOND RD ANYWAY YOU WONT GET ONE AS GOOD AS THIS KID AS A ROOKIE!!!!

HE WAS BEASTIN FOR PANTHERS LAST YEAR....AND IF THIS IS A NEED IN THE DRAFT ANYWAY HES BETTER THAN ANY KID WE COULD LAND IN THE SECOND FROM DAY ONE!!!!

I DONT USUALLY GET INTO GIVIN UP PICKS BUT U GOTTA CONSIDER THIS KID FA DAM SURE!!!!

He looked really good early in the year, and has solid ball skills, but in the second half of the season he really gave up a lot of yards and receptions.

From week 9 to week 17 he fell in my coverage rankings from 18.72(8th best) to 8.51(52nd best). That puts him just one spot ahead of rookie Glover Quin.

I would rather have Antonio Cromartie if we're going to burn a 2nd rounder on a corner, and I'd rather not give up more than a 3rd for him.

I get your point...but thats not my point.....its pretty unanimous that we are pickin a corner this draft..........that being said

who will we draft thats better than this kid in the draft.....even if its in the second round??????...whos better than marshall???....hes young & hes gonna do nothing but get better, plus he has NFL experiance.....IMHO

richard marshall comes in and is automatically a starter here with the crop we got as of now (reeves, mccain, glover)

Despite this, if you look at the big picture, he has averaged 80 tackles per season x 4 seasons, and came up with 4 interceptions last year (along with his 88 tackles). He's had 11 interceptions in the 4 years (all but 1 in a period of 3 years). He is relatively big for a CB at 5'11'' and is a very physical player who can play the run, cover just as well, and hit like a mutha.

Rick Smith needs to wake up and get busy, FA starts Friday and this would be a great trade if he can get it done.

There were several corners that were as good or better than Marshal taken in last years draft. J.Powers, J.Lacey, S.Smith and G.Quin among them.

Ironically the corners taken in the 1st round last year stunk it up, and it was mostly second day guys who played well.

This is actually one of the best corner classes to come along in awhile. It's just empty at the very top, where we're not picking anyway.

4 picks is nice, but piling up 80 tackles when you give up over 60 receptions isn't really impressive.

I see Marshall as a capable #2 starter, but is that really worth a 2nd round pick?

Marshall, IMO, is a very good CB. Even if he's a solid #2, given his age and experience along with the limited UFA options, it may make sense to sign him instead of attempting to address the need in the draft. He would almost definitely be more valuable to the defense in the short term than a 2nd round rookie CB.

this!!!!!...exactly the point

@goatcheese.....just u sayin he is a capable starter is sayin what im sayin in a nutshell...so hes def worth a second......you cant get a rookie in the entire draft that beats him in NFL experiance...especially when this whole board knows we goin corner 1st or 2nd round...he is essentially your second round pick....a bonified starter....

If they wanted to keep him, they could have tendered him a contract for another $1 million dollars and kept everyone away from him. They decided not to do that and he's now going to be up for grabs for a 2nd round pick.

The Jets are evidently already reported to be going after Marshal. If the Texans are serious, they better jump in fast and furious.

From Adam Scheffer's Twitter:

The Panthers have extended a restricted free agent tender of just the second-round variety to CB Richard Marshall.
Either Carolina is just being cheap or it saw something bad from Marshall in 2009 that we didn't. As a starting corner one one of the league's top pass defenses, Marshall picked off four passes, recovered two fumbles, and has always been a big tackler. The 25-year-old is likely to draw interest. Jets are reported to have worked out a trade for Cromartie. Not sure if they are trying to do both or jumped that way rather than this way.

Can't believe that there's been no mention of Marshall by the Texans in our quest for a promising DR replacement.

My guess is the Panthers are looking to add ammo to make a move for one of the top QBs in this draft and they know teams will bite at a 2nd round tender...I might bite if I was Houston, the'll be drafting a corner with that pick anyways if they don't get one in the first round.

Because Marshall just isn't that good. We got Quin in the 4th, and Marshall isn't appreciably better than him.

Why give up a 2nd and a big contract for a guy who is an average #2? The Jets got Cromartie for less than that, and he is atleast a good #2/average #1.

I don't know that I can agree with that. Interceptions alone would widely have separated the two. Furthermore, I can't see any CB that we could get
in the 2nd round that would offer better value, and certainly with unproven NFL level experience. It's unlikely that a player obtained in the 2nd round of this year's draft, is going to be able to be plugged into our starter position of need. And "building for the future" can't be the argument at this position when the Texans are saying that "this is our year." However, if the "urgency" of such a statement plays out insincerely and/or as poorly as it has in the recent past, then all bets are off anyway.

We're a week into the FA period and no team has taken Carolina up on this offer yet, he's still available. That means 31 teams in the NFL think Marshall isn't worth a 2nd round pick. I'd wait another week and when Carolina realizes that no team is going to take them up on their offer, I'd call them and offer a 3rd and 5th and see if they bite.

Thirty one teams aren't looking to fill a dire need starting CB position. But I guess we'll see. I just hope that by the beginning of the season, we are not still looking at the heavens for our CB to miraculously fall out of the sky.

Hey, we got a safety that miraculously fell out of the sky last season. Texans probably think it will happen again. Manna from Heaven!
