AJ:Report: Texans met with scouting combine star Bruce Campbell

The Texans met yesterday with Maryland offensive tackle Bruce Campbell, according to a report by Brian MacIntyre of NorthwestFootball.net

If you watched scouting combine coverage yesterday on NFL Network, you already know about Campbell.

Campbell measured in at 6-6, 314 lbs with 36 1/4 inch arms.

He ran an amazing 4.85 forty yard dash, best among offensive linemen; bench pressed 34 times which is impressive for someone with such long arms; and was also a top performer in vertical jump, 3-cone drill and 20 yard shuttle.

Let's just say he's an impressive athlete, and while we're at it we might as well get the immediate reaction out of the way.

Workout warrior?

Maybe. The coaches panel on NFL Network (Steve Mariuchi, Brian Billick, and Jim Mora Jr.) and Mike Mayock all said basically the same thing about Campbell at the end of the day. He gets an A+ in measurables, but as we all know, the tape will tell the story. Most offensive linemen in the league haven't run a timed 40 since they did it at the combine.

His athleticism would help him translate to the ZBS, but this scheme is also one of the hardest for O-Lineman to learn. He strikes me as a workout warrior type lineman though. It's rare for a guy who didn't even get one vote as an all-conference player to be considered a 1st round pick. Right now he is ranked that high based all off of measurables and percieved potential. He never really did anything in college.

Very doubtful. Usually lineman in a ZBS have the versatility to move inside, but I don't think Brown or Winston can do that.

I'm wondering why you say that? I might be getting totally confused, but I thought that was one of the things mentioned about Brown early on (before he solidified as our LT) - that he could play guard if necessary.

I've also heard several people suggest moving Winston inside - I have more trouble seeing this one, myself. I think the argument is that he has been great in run blocking (and this could translate to the inside), but has had trouble with speed during pass protection, which would not be an issue if he were inside.

I remember hearing that about Brown as well and I said as much a few weeks ago, but the consensus I got from the board was that he needs to stay at Tackle. Maybe that was just under the assumption that we wouldn't be able to upgrade the LT spot.

I can't see Winston moving inside though.

I could see Winston moving inside to RG easily and putting Campbell at RT would make it easier on him to transition to the NFL than LT would. I brought this up a couple weeks ago upgrading 2 position with one pick, it make sense. It just all depends on who's available at the time.

I put him to Oakland in the first on a mock I did. Sad but true. I said the only way Oakland takes an OT early is if he got around 4.8.

This kid could probably play 4 spots on the line (sans C)

Left guard might not be a bad idea, less pressure on the kid to block the best pass rushers.

Eh, he's just the first thing I think of when Campbell's name's brought up now. Granted, I haven't personally watched film on the guy so I might be mislabeling him, but every draft evaluation coming from people I normally trust and watch say his film doesn't come close to what he portrayed at the Combine.

These draft experts said some of the same things about Jared Gaither.

He was taken with a 6th rd pick in the supplemental draft.

The S & C coach at Maryland (who I wish the Texans would've hired) said Campbell has the ability to be better than Gaither.

I think he got Suspended because the Maryland coaching staff wanted to play Stefon Heyer (SP?) at LT and Gaither at RT. Gaither threw a fit and got kicked off the team.

Gaither has proven to be the better player in the pros.

5th rd for a better LT (Gaither > D.Brown IMHO) than what the Texans drafted in the 1st rd.
