All this extra attention will add more pressure than ever for teams to impact rosters & create a buzz for their fan base. Also enhancing this years draft is a horde of underclassman trying to get in on possibly the last big pay day before a new barginning agreement can cap the rookie salaries. Making this the year to trade up & down depending on a teams needs (multiple/singular) for future considerations. Hence I expect Rick Smith & the Texans to be more aggressive from their past conservative approach.

Coveted prospects who could still be on the board around 20 who offer potential to pull big trade offers are IMO - C.J. Spiller, Dez Bryant, Sean Weatherspoon, Taylor Mays, Kyle Wilson, Patrick Robinson & Sergio Kindle to name a few. The idea would be to trade back not for future picks but for additional picks in this draft. If somehow the Texans could aquire an extra 2nd & 3rd giving Rick two picks in each rd. (without a 1st) I would give it serious consideration.

This could upgrade 4 positions w/new starters sooner rather than later. Kubiak needs to win now & become a legitimate playoff contender to satisfy this fan base that much we do know & the best way is to be aggressive in this years draft as I just don't see much depth to this years potential free agent market. Positions of importance are RB, FS, OL, CB, DL I know that's 5 but we're close. compare these two & tell me what you think?

1st - Kyle Wilson, CB
2nd -Toby Gerhart, RB
3rd - Mike Johnson, LG
VS
2nd - Maurkice Pouncey, C
2nd - Toby Gerhart, RB
3rd - Donovan Warren, CB/FS
3rd - Linval Joseph, DT
OR
2nd - Maurkice Pouncey, C
2nd - Nate Allen, FS
3rd - Linval Joseph, DT
3rd - Ben Tate, RB
Toby Gerhart is not worth a 2nd round pick.

Mike Johnson will not last until the 3rd round. He is a mid-to-late 2nd round pick.

Donovan Warren will not last until the 3rd round. He will be gone in the first 40 picks.

This option is rated more on team needs in prioity of order rather than purely based on talent alone, if that makes any sense. The main point to be taken is a trade with Tampa would return a top pick @ the beginning of each round so in essence the first 2nd pick could be 1st rd. talent as the first 3rd. 2nd rd. talent. This is why the group is tightly rated together returning extra value.

regarding Toby Gerhart, Lance Zierlein just posted this on his blog -

http://blogs.chron.com/fantasyfootball/2010_nfl_draft/

Quote:
There seems to be a bit of a split on Stanford's Toby Gerhart. While nobody is blown away by him, I do think you will see some teams who prefer a more powerful inside runner take a look at him by the mid-to-late second round despite having a 3rd round grade on him. The thought is that while Gerhart has a limited ceiling, his floor is very safe and whoever drafts him should see a fairly consistent level of production

He'got atleast 3/4 years left in him. I would do a trade for Jackson in a heartbeat. He's everything the Texans have been looking for in a RB since day 1 of this franchise.

PK Spievey is the CB I'm hoping is there in the 3rd. Do you like him?

I've got 1.Haden 2.Wilson 3. Ghee 4.Spievey 5.Cox 6.Franks

What are the chances of one of these guys being available in the 3rd?

I have Wilson, Cox, Warren, Ghee, Spivey, Franks, Arenas, and Thompson all pretty close to each other. The stop watch is going to change the final rankings of these guys. A group of them should slide.

I like the idea of trading down and gathering picks in the 2nd and 3rd round. That gives me a chance at two pretty good CBs and two interior offensive linemen.

Grab me two of the CBs off my list and add them to Glover Quinn and Brice McCain from last year and make Bennett, Molden and Reeves earn there playing time, not a bad group of young CBs.

This is going to be a deep draft for CBs.

Barwin might have been to raw of a prospect for the Hoodie to take in the 2nd and was going to try and get him in the 3rd instead. Pats last year needed a ton of secondary help and Im sure that they felt the pass rush wasnt as bad as they thought.

Texans had him rated as first round talent. Just shows how different draft boards vary. Barwin looks like a natural 3-4 rush outside linebacker to me, if anything its more a reach to expect him to put his hand down & battle a tackle @ line of scrimmage but it was expected Texans would address pass rusher early. My draft grade for him would reflect this fit, early 2nd for 3-4 OLB & mid to late 2nd for a 4-3 DE.

I don't think about this that much, really. But the Texans do have some pieces to execute a 3-4 alingment Barwin being one, primarily in 3rd & long situations.

Not trying to be cute here, but McClain is saying in the Chron.com video blog that the Dunta has not been approached by the Texans for either a long term deal or to discuss the franchise tag. In John's opinion that signals that Texans are going to let Dunta go to the open market.

In the open market McClain believe the Redskins will pay Dunta to much money and he will be gone. Why is this important? Because if Dunta is allowed to leave, which I also believe is going to happen, we then need a top 60 pick to be a CB.

In beerlovers proposal of trading down, we can add not just one solid man to man CB but two CBs. This is a draft with a lot of good CBs that are falling into the 25-90 range. In the words of Al Davis, or some other old timer, you can never have to many CBs.

I totally agree. I'm not saying I want to switch to a 3-4 full time (I love the 4-3)... but if you have the personnel to legitimately run various schemes, your defense is significantly better because of it. For instance, if you lack depth in the secondary, all your doing in nickle/dime packages is have an extra body out there, thats it!

This is one reason why Dan Williams interests me if he makes it to #19/20. He would make it much easier for us to run a 3-4 on occasion, besides playing DT in our 4-3. More versatility or players that can play "multiple positions" or in "multiple schemes" really opens things up for Frank Bush and our Defense.

But hell, there's nothing like have some lock down corners. I'd love to see some offensive weapons, but with all the players and talent that could be available at CB, FS and DT... I'm hoping we address those positions early and often.

Trade down? I love trade downs. I think the best value for most of these guys that would help this team are late 1st to mid 2nd.

I was referring to him being suspended for the Cotton Bowl game for missing curfew 2 different nights the week of preparing for the game. Plus the record shows his license was suspended for violations then he was arrested for driving after that anyway. http://www.newson6.com/Global/story.asp?S=11023391

I can't find the other link I read some weeks ago that said he blatantly violated several traffic laws but finally a judge had enough and suspended him.

Missed the curfew thing, again I would go to his coach and talk to him, and then to the young man, you can tell alot by the way the player owns up to the punishment in the interview.

I understand the talking to coach part but if a player misses curfew twice in the week before the Cotton Bowl, I think a red flag is waing that he might just miss a team meeting or a flight...not that in itself says he can't be a great player but does Kubiac want that? Remember the incident with Mario Williams speeding and McNair talking with him?

Jacoby Jones is still here, not saying that you are wrong about Cox and I agree that is a flag, I am just saying sometimes 20 something young men do stupid things. And you can only tell about them from the men around them.

I heard Jacoby Superbowl week on the radio and he seemed to have grown, will he still screw up only time will tell, but he took ownership of his breaking the team rules and he understood "coach". He was one of the guys happy Kubiak is back with a new contract.
