Default Arian Foster....

Just thought I would let you guys/gals know, they had a little article in the local paper a few days ago about Arian stopping by a local elementary school here in Albuquerque and saying a few positive things to the kids. Nice to see things like this from the guys.

Apparently posters here don't care if the players are good people. They just want good *players*.

Did some mean old message board posters pour some sand in your swim trunks or something? The argument isn't as simple as "good players or good people, choose one" and you should know that. The two aren't mutually exclusive states and I'm sure you know that.

Good for Arian, I really like this young man.

Sorry if you think some of us are taking this story with a grain of salt but we've got a whole team of "good guys". Hiring good guys is standard operating procedure for the Texans and they take it very seriously. You never hear of Texans players getting in trouble.

Fred Weary was the only one I can remember who got in trouble with the cops and according to some friends who are police officers, that was just a big misunderstanding. The arresting office was an older police woman who was about 110# dripping wet. When she saw big ol Fred get out of his car, she wet her britches and zapped him with the tazer. Fred didn't do anything wrong other then be huge.

Yes, what is this 'looser' doing not preparing for next season? If you don't eat, breath and shit football then I don't want you on my team. Stop wasting your time helping children learn, or feeding starving people in Africa. Just live football 365 days a year!

Good for him , it's always better to hear this kind of story rather than the alternative.

From a football point of view, I like some of what I saw out of the guy and look forward to seeing him on the team next season. But I hope that he is an afterthought in the draft room this year.

I know that they're not mutually exclusive. It's just evident to me (not by assuming, but because posters clearly say it) that they don't care if the player is an asshat. As long as he's plays well, we're good with that.

Okoye doing work in Nigeria? Who the f*ck cares? Some people would take him getting a sack in a game over him actually doing real life charity work.

I'm sorry, but things like Arian Foster giving back to the community and Okoye doing charity work are things that help me cheer for these guys week in and week out, not things that make me question their dedication to football because they're not ignoring people in need and focusing their entire attention on football.

What gives Amobi Okoye the ability to go do charity work in Nigeria? Money gives him that and the source of that money is the nice contract he got from the Houston Texans who selected him 10th in the draft. Rookie contracts don't last forever and eventually anyone who can't or won't live up to their draft position faces a "Jason Babin Moment" when that money goes away. Then how much real life charity work will he be able to do without the off-season or salary of an NFL starting defensive lineman?

If he wants to keep making a millionaire sized difference in the world he's going to have to earn it and the only thing Amobi Okoye can do to earn that kind of bank is try to become a better DT because he's not going to be making that money for long at the rate he's going.

That's just reality man. I think its great that he wants to make the world a better place. I think it's great that Amobi wants to go help Nigerians and that Andre Johnson wants to give kids bikes for Christmas and all the other cool stuff he does. I think this act by Arian Foster is an excellent thing for him to do. Note that AJ gets it done and Foster obviously is working his butt off because he's gone from undrafted FA to practice squad player to the guy who carried the running game for the last two weeks of the season and who appears to be likely to get a shot to be the man here.

A player who can't do his job isn't going to be in a position to help anybody for long.

The problem, however, arises when fans get upset when a player tries to do something good for the community/world.

"Oh, he's doing work in Nigeria. Obviously that means he has no work ethic or love towards the game of football."

Like you said, those two things are not mutually exclusive. Why can't we appreciate the things that sports players do to help the community, even the bad players?

And then, turn right around and say that the guy needs to pick up his play?

But no, instead posters whine and moan about how Okoye is doing charity work and instead he needs to be going after the American Dream: earning a boatload of money and making the rest of WE fans who are sitting on our couches on Sunday happy. Can he not do both without being criticized?

I think the difference and what really irritates people is when a player does the charity work and then does not put in the hard work in the off season to improve. A good example of that is Okoye. He did his Nigeria trip and then came back and didn't put the hard work into his game in the offseason. I recall an article where he pretty much said that he did not prepare enough in the off season and now that he knew better he would put in the time in the gym.

He also spoke at a UNM class (Race, Sport & Media) last week. Some of the points he made that stuck in my mind was how the media wants to talk about the lack of role models in professional sports. He said he plays with one of the best WRs in the game and one of the nicest, GOOD guys in Andre Johnson. Yet when you turn on the tv, the players best known are Ocho Cinco, TO, etc. He said he thinks its a shame that more is not made of how good a player and person Andre is. And people like Andre.

I happen to agree.

Okoye could learn something about work ethic from another former Nigerian/Houstonian sports legend. Hakeem the Dream.
