Here's my blog post on the subject:
Matt Schaub second in the NFL getting hit after the throw. Ouch. The numbers show that the Texans were sacked near the least in the league despite having a large number of throws. HOWEVER, Schaub was hit after the throw the second highest number in the league. Ungood. I discuss this some and invite you to do the same.

I mentioned this before. While the sack numbers aren't that bad......The number of times Schaub was hit is insane... Check this out:NFL.com Offensive Line Stats
While we held up well with sacks (which may be more of Schaub being able to make a play), rather than our O-line playing well we let Schaub be hit 92 times...... or 10th worrst this season...... The O-line ready??? Not so much!!!

Sounds like Schaub should be given some credit for being able to sense the rush and get the ball out in time.

By comparison: Peyton was only hit 44 times!
Schaub was hit 126 times! Nice job, Studdard and Myers!

Curious how these hits are season-wise. I have a feeling, hunch really, that after OD went down we decreased on the shorter throws over the middle, could the hits be the result of this?
Purely speculating!

I agree the O-line needs improvement, but I think some of that may be due to Indy running all those short crossing routs which allows Manning to get rid of the ball much quicker where as Schaub seems to throw down field more often. In the first game against Indy, Dallas Clarck had 14 receptions with the longest being just 17 yrds and the longest pass to any reciever that day for Indy was just 26 yrds.

If we Texans fans have learned anything regarding these type of numbers is that it's easy to jump to conclusions about the offensive line. I'm not saying that the line didn't have a role in creating these numbers. Just that there are other factors, as well. Schaub holds on to the ball. I didn't say, holds on the ball too long. He is trying to make plays down the field, as his league leading yardage numbers would indicate. Schaub also doesn't read the defense as quickly as Peyton Manning or Drew Brees. These guys know where they're going with the ball often before they even get the snap. How much the limitations Kubiak imposes on audibles causes these delays is unknown. The running game (or lack there of). It is much easier for a defensive lineman to pin his ears and rush the passer when he doesn't have to be all that concerned with run support. If the Texans can somehow develop a consistent rushing attack, maybe those play action fakes can hold the d-line down a little longer.

I think alot of it has to do with DL not being scared of a FREAKING PENALTY by hitting Schaub as opposed to hitting Manning also.

I was sick a couple of days ago so I stayed in and watched some games I recorded - Tenn, Raiders, Bills, and Patriots. It was amazing how Schaub was clearly being pounded into the ground after a throw and the officials looked as if they didn't see a thing. Then you go back and look at some of the calls that pretty much bailed Indianapolis out of some dirty situations against us and that starts to tick you off if even in the offseason for us.

some other contributing factors to those numbers:
1. Schaub's pocket presence. Though improved, he handles pressure more like Aikman than Marino or Manning. He tries to throw in the face of it more often than sliding away from pressure and then throwing. 2. Number of attempts. He threw the ball 100-200 times more than a lot of teams did. 3. Mediocre OL. 4. Predictable protection schemes. West Coast offenses are known for being very predictable with their protections, believing that their timing and efficiency can combat the blitz... but, that can lead to some pretty good shots- post-release, even if everyone does their job. 5. Schaub likes to thrown downfield. His YPA is very high because he'll wait a moment longer to make the downfield pass instead of dropping it underneath in he face of pressure. |

It's common knowledge that Schaub still takes unnecessary hits. He could probably clean up about 2-3 per game...that's 30-50 extra hits per year which amounts to a larger injury risk. Just look at that "Dammit Donald" clip of Manning as a quick contrast in styles. Schaub would have gotten drilled there...Manning slides and curses his protection.

Can nobody on this board get a joke? Do I really have to find a character that says, "HEY, I'M Joking!". Seems that there were plenty clues to the humor in the text itself.
