He did squat against real competition last year. What did he do in his bowl game? Shaun Cody is a way better player. He played against the best O-line in college and had White peeing his pants all night. Plus he is versitle and can play both DE and DL. He has the speed we need in a 3-4 system. I think he will become a Richard Seymour type player. If we pass him by we will regret it.

Well the short answer is because he's a physical freak. He's a 300 pound DLineman that has played at TE in college, and he's got the speed and power to play as a 3-4 DLinemen. Shaun Cody weighed in at around 290 something at the combine, whereas Spears was 307 and still maintains his speed & quickness. If you only look to two games to evaluate a player then you don't get a very good idea about him. You've got to watch Spears throughout his career at LSU to get a good idea why people are so high on him.

Marcus Spears is a very skilled, verstile & agile DT/DE. he is very fluid in his gate & athleticly sound not to mention he is a leader with great character. He was injured towards the end of the season, then the combines but from what's been told nothing serious. if he had been healthy he would have competed at the combine and his stock would even be higher. when enabled he is a solid pass rusher, maybe not the quick inside type of Cody but can rollover the outside ends with enough speed to make the QB uneasy. on run support he is especially effective which really is a major ingredient to a 3-4 defensive lineman, along with occupying double teams.
the guy the Texans might be more interested with than Shaun Cody @ USC is their NT Mike Patterson. he might be given strong consideration in the 2nd round should Seth Payne no longer be in a Texans uniform. |

not the best comparison, andre actually had a very good junior year, one of the best in school history, he got i think it was the 3rd 1000 season ever. also he had kellen and willis to take away from him. he also had nine tds. he was held down in the fiesta bowl but i will say that was more on the play calling, o-line, and qb play. he was open a few times but dorsey overthrew him or was sacked. gamble did play a great game.
marcus is very gifted athlete, the guy can dunk. you can't make up your mind about him based on the games he played on tv, can't fault you because that is all you can see of him. but he did very well in the last few games and would always come up with a big sack in the 4th quarter.

not that it really matters, but just fyi draftnotebook.com has us selecting spears at #13...ofcourse it hasnt been updated since feb. 23 and a lot has changed in the league since then...but it seems like a reasonable draft with the first 20 or so picks...after that its all bpa anyways...

Shaun Cody ran a 4.75 which is just as fast as Pollock. Who is about the fastest DL in the draft. Plus Cody is bigger than him

Cody and Pollock would play different positions in our defense. Pollock is a bit too small for a 4-3 end.

I wouldn't think it would be out of the question to draft Spears with GFunk getting up there in age, but I think they would only do that if he was the BPA at 13. Spears very well could be gone by the Cowboys pick. It's looking more likely that we might take an OLB like Merriman or a CB like Jones or even possibly take a look at a WR like Williamson if we stay at 13. Alot of signs are pointing towards trading down, and maybe picking up Baas.

If we draft him he will be put at safety. We are good at CB.

i dont think that Cody would be a good fit for a 3-4 thats why people arent considering him. Spears would be more of a 2 gap player like Robair has been thsu far. He doesnt need much speed(even though he has it

Besides Pac Man Jones measured in at 5' 9.5" 187lbs and ran a 4.35 in the 40. So it would be the same as putting Glenn at FS. He just doesn't have the ideal size you look for in a safety, but he's the right size for a CB. |
