If we sign him.. Who do you think we would let go? Id be pretty disappointed if we let Wells go.. honestly I think he is a great backup and deserves to stay. Hollings on the other hand I think is a bust and we would be making a mistake if we kept him over Wells.

Ah well.. who knows.. maybe with the zone blocking Dayne will turn into Portis.

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Houston Texans are close to acquiring RB Ron Dayne (Giants) from the New York Giants. A deal could be announced as early as Wednesday, March 2.

Wasn't the knock on Ron Dayne that he couldn't get a first down on third and 1? The Giants were so down on him they used Tiki on third and short.

We have plenty of room to bring in as many backs as we like into camp. Personally, I think this is not a good sign for Wells. Hollings is the only speed option in our backfield if we sign Dayne (oh lord take me now), so I feel Hollings is safe.

This is just a Capers type of player. Doesn't fumble, he's had like 4 fumbles in his career. I think it's a welcome addition to the team because he should have some tread left in him. Of course I made that great dissertation about Mack too.

I dont understand this. I think Wells is basically the same type of back. I actually liked Wells last year, and the only reason I can see this happening is Wells wanting to much money.

This is what happens when ppl want RBs badly...u get terrible ones.

Anthony Thomas is a better option..or draft Shelton or Harris...but NO, we get prolly the worst heisman winner EVER.

if Wells wants more money than Dayne is asking for.. there is something wrong with that boy.. or his agent.

I dont see the logic in this move either personally.... I have been against grabbing a #2 receiver in FA.. but id prefer we blew our cap on a #2 over Ron Dayne. but whatever.. ill just have to give Casserly the benefit of the doubt..... again.

During last preseason, ESPN had a segment on Dayne. They pointed out that despite his size, he hasn't done well in goalline/short situations. What they did note, however, is that he has a much, much higher percentage of big plays (15+ yards) per carry the more carries he has in a game. He gets in a grove, punishes the opponent, and seems to see the field better.

What I gathered from that is that he really needs to be a featured back or not play at all. That was the problem with him and Tiki sharing the backfield.

Just saw how the Raiders let Wheatley go, now THAT would have been the better move.

Wow, that about cements Lamont Jordan over there.

-- Jordan Flying to Oakland --
Wed Mar 2, 2005 --from FFMastermind.com

ESPN's John Clayton reports the Oakland Raiders contacted free-agent RB LaMont Jordan (Jets) and convinced him to fly to Oakland to try to get him signed today. The Jets have a very strong offer on the table to keep him, but the Dolphins and Bucs are also in pursuit. The Raiders are currently $2.3 million under the cap, but they have to clear more space to fit in the Moss contract and even more to do Jordan. Among the guys who could get cut are DT John Parrella and OG Ron Stone.

I could not be more :| about an offseason move.

Really, what a waste of dollars. This team ceases to amaze me.

I wouldnt say Dayne is an upgrade over Wells . At this point dayne has been a total bust from a draft prospective and i dont know for a fact he can replace Wells on special teams (which is an area Wells excell's at) . Wells plays on punt coverage , return and kick-off return and coverage teams .
Dayne may well be a better RB than Wells but is he a better teammate / overall player ?
Which of them is wanting more $$ ?

I expect Wells to be resigned at some point this off-season

That's a good point. We all know that Davis is the starter and that the backup RB should be a very good special teams. Did Dayne play any special teams last year? I would rather have Dayne than Wells in the backfield in case, no when, Davis goes down. Are we sure Dayne can't play special teams?

You got that right, Wheatley is a stud. And that's been a big knock on Dayne, for such a big back he's really whimpy when it comes to running inside
tackle. Wells was running very hard last year and of course is also a very good ST player. And this draft is chock full of RBs. Maybe we get him dirt cheap - if this is for real, hopefully we get a definitive explanation.

personally, id rather have wells than dayne. but if they do bring him in, i hope he does good and is able to fill the role that wells does on special teams.

...not sure if they arent feeling confident about one of our RBs. if they are i hope its hollings and not wells

First time I've laughed out loud at a post around here in quite a while. Hilarious.

The current #3 back IS FINE. I'm not inclined to give up on Wells because I think he's just now hitting his stride here. This is not somewhere I expected Houston to be a FA player, and I really hope we save our cap space for positions more in need of upgrades.
