I've been around your MB for a while and thought I would share some ideas about the upcoming draft. I watch all Texans games and read most of the threads, especially related to the draft and NFL topics. By no means am I trying to portray myself as some sort of draft guru. I'm just a guy who wants to bounce some ideas around and get some feedback on what I percieve as needs for the Texans.
Some thoughts on the draft: 1. OG Mike Iupati Idaho 6'5 330lbs. Nibble enough to play OT and big enough to be a force in the red zone. Probably BPA @20 and really could be a fixture for the next 10 yrs. 2. CB Brandon Ghee Wake Forest 6'1 190lbs. This is a good spot to pick a premire CB and the Texans could have a choice between Perrish Cox, Patrick Robinson, and Javier Arenas. Fills another area of need with a quality pick. 3. DT Lamar Houston Texas 6'2 300lbs. Great motor, good rotation guy for interior DL. May not make it this far, but if he is there, good value. Besides, his last name is Houston, how cool is that. 4. RB Charles Scott LSU 5'11 228lbs. Nice bigger back to help get those short yards. Should work fine with Slayton for a change of pace back. 5a. TE Colin Peek Alabama 6'6 255lbs. Lunch pail guy who is adequate blocker with good hands. Not one to stretch a field but good at finding soft spots. 5b. S Josh Pinkard USC 6'1 215lbs. The "other" S from USC. Would loved to have picked a S earlier, but just couldn't make it work. This kid can play, he'll stick. 6. OG Brandon Carter Texas Tech 6'7 370lbs. I know this kids a head case, but come on, maybe a little crazy is good sometimes. Every team needs a roadgrader. 7. K Aaron Pettrey Ohio State -- Usually drafting a kicker at all is a waste. This kid has a big leg and can kick in the cold weather. Somebody will draft this kid. Saves begging in FA. We all have different ideas, just thought I'd share mine. Thoughts?

No more TE's and if we are running the ZBS next year then I seriously doubt if Carter is on our board. Other than that I like the picks.

I agree about Carter. He is just not the right fit for this scheme. Personally I would love a power running scheme but it aint happenin. I dissagree about TE. If you can get a really good TE late in the dtaft its good value why not. I would love to have Peek or Pita for the right price.

But early in this draft, 1st round, 2nd round, even the third, I want a big back. 5'9" to 6'3"... 210 to 240 lbs. with good to great speed.

Thanks for the feedback. Here is my reasoning for the 2 picks 5a and 6.
5a Colin Peek TE. Isn't OD up for a new contract? That was part of the reasoning behind Colin Peek @ 5a. Hopefully, his injury is fine and the Texans will give him a new contract. Managment may want a fall back just in case. I would. 6 Brandon Carter OG. On the surface it seems redundant to draft an OG (Iupatio) in the first and turn around here and pick up another. My logic was to add inexpensive depth with the option for a "jumbo" type short yardage package. Durring the last few weeks of the season the Browns started using a zone blocking scheme and bringing in Hank Fraley (OC) to the TE position and really opening holes. I was screaming at the TV all season for some sort of smash mouth short yardage scheme for the Texans. As for drafting a QB (Ponder or Brown), I never really explored that option. Might not be a bad idea at all. I guess Grossman is a FA. Brown may very well go undrafted. Would rather see an older experienced backup like Kitna for example. One more note to consider: I'm not positive, but I think Jerome Harrison (RB Browns) may be up for FA this year. If the Browns screw up and do not re-sign him, I would love to see him play for the Texans. You guys would love him.

Only thing that made an impression on me was another TE .

Colin Peek is a hidden gem on that Alabama offense. His main job is sealing off the edge, creating running lanes for Ingram & Richardson but he has above average hands, has been well coached & plays smart. I would take him, let him come into training camp & earn a roster spot if not hide him on practice squad in case of more injurys. |

1. OG Mike Iupati Idaho 6'5 330lbs is a name several of us are really high on, the one problem facing this selection is with all the underclassman declaring early this suddenly became talent layden rich, meaning while not far off BPA there will be another player available who is above him on the Texans board, I'm sure of it. 2. CB Brandon Ghee Wake Forest 6'1 190lbs I could live with this pick, but feel he represents what the Texans drafted in 4th rd. Glover Quinn. If the Texans go CB they need a ballhawk, run support is nice but covered & Ghee recorded zero INT's in 09. maybe a small school CB in rd. 3/4 like Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Indiana. 3. DT Lamar Houston Texas 6'2 300lbs Like this pick, Texans do like athletic, quick one-gap tackles. 4. RB Charles Scott LSU 5'11 228lbs Too early, maybe if the Texans do get a 5th rd. pick I would use one here on him to address power back role. 5a. TE Colin Peek Alabama 6'6 255lbs Sharp eye, would be a great pick but would mean the Texans are giving up on Hill not OD. I've seen teams cut their loses after one year & be decisive but nothing we've seen on the field suggests such sense of urgency, although I agree. 5b. S Josh Pinkard USC 6'1 215lbs another really good pick-up has talent to play in the secondary in meaningful situations, however we might be able to pick him up undrafted, reason? will be coming back from his 3rd acl 6. OG Brandon Carter Texas Tech 6'7 370lbs man thats a monster. I don't see him fitting in Gibbs ZBS but that would be something. 7. K Aaron Pettrey Ohio State torn mcl not sure about that? going for a kicker in the 7th if they don't address it via free agency. |

Looks like I got beat. I am not sure if I will post my mock now since many people will think I copied your idea with my 1st and 6th picks!

Has a definate decision been made about whether the Texans extra pick is a 5th or 6th round pick? If its a 6th round pick, then I flubbed up. My intention was to be accurate, just got some bad info.
Also it appears I overstated Brandon Carters weight. I listed it as 370lbs. Other draft sites have him listed as 344lbs. Same site for both errors. Thanks again for the feedback. I believe that all of us that participate in mock drafts have a certain inner drive to try to fix things. We all want improvements. Its been educational for me to bounce ideas off you guys, and I really appreciate the feedback.

Don't worry too much about weight right now. As we all know schools lie about how big the prospects really are to make them seem more intimidating. We will know for sure when Carter goes to his pro day or the combine.

I've seen Carter play many times and he is overrated to me. He is a fat guy who can't move laterally and gets way too many holding and personal foul penalties. Playing with aggression is one thing but this guy looks like he plays dirty. Just my opinion.
People don't remember him because he is a good player. They remember him because he has cool hair, face paint, and tatoos. |
