Default Dunta doing alright?

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...n/6783848.html

I know I have been guilty of being pissed at Dunta this year and in all honesty I couldn't tell you how much of it is because of how disappointed/angry I was with him because of the way he handled getting franchise tagged and his whole "Pay Me Rick" episode. If you ask me I would say he has lost a step and hasn't shown up in the running game like he has in the past. I can remember his bad plays and have trouble remembering his good ones. But Solomon makes some good points in this article. For instance:

"The Texans put Robinson on a receiver, typically the opponents' No. 1 wideout, one-on-one about 90 percent of the time. Most of those receivers have done little damage against Robinson. Ochocinco slipped past him for a 50-yard catch, which Texans coaches say is the lone deep ball completed against Robinson this season."

This is the first year that I can remember where we move our number 1 CB onto the other teams top WR. Got to give Dunta some credit here. To build on this point:

"He hasn't had a monster season he doesn't have an interception but he has been very good. Robinson's play has set the tone for a Texans secondary that has allowed only one wide receiver (Chad Ochocinco) to top the 100-yard mark this season."

I guess this is somewhat comparable to a defense not allowing a 100 yard rusher but honestly the top CB on the team has more impact on a receiver wheras in the running game its really a team effort. Not saying this is entirely on the CB because its also a team effort but in this case 1 player probably has the most impact. Still cannot believe that he dropped that INT vs. Tenn. and then you have to figure out a way to calculate the penalties he has contributed.

Lastly the team defensive stats have been the best we have ever seen. 12th total defense, giving up about 210 ypg passing, middle of the league scoring average. I expected defensive improvement this year but I think I can honestly say that the performance to date is the very high end of what I had hoped for.

I've always thought that CB was one of the toughest positions for fans to judge because we just don't see what they do on every play unless the ball goes their way. I just can't get the picture of Britt running away from him and scoring a TD or the way that Donnie Avery blew past him on that one play last Sunday out of my mind(the angle on that TO run for a TD vs. Buffalo was pretty awful as well). I also think that Solomon has a bit of a habit of going overboard with what I would call "Anti herd thought." Pretty much he looks at the prevailing attitudes among some fans and assumes (not always incorrectly) that they must be complete buffoons, I'm going to write an article to let them know whats really what.

Bottom line, he is probably playing better than I am personally giving him credit for but I still don't think he is worth the kind of cash he wants. I'd like to believe he is so we can resign him and use most of our resources this offseason discovering a legit rushing attack instead of replacing lost pieces in the secondary but I'm just not feeling it, what do you guys think?

He wants to be paid like a shutdown cornerback and he's not. Not even close.

Hope he enjoys that 10 million he's not seeing anything close to that dollar amount per year in his next contract.

I hope he's not back with us next year but like Kubiak i have a feeling they both will be.

Mediocrity continued. Ugh.

What a load of garbage. I just get so tired of these flip flop fluff writers at the comical. Is Solomon getting paid by Dunta to write this trash? Has he even watched Dunta play this season? People rag on McClain but he is way better than Justice and Solomon.

Flip flop? Not Solomon.

He's been carrying water for Dunta ever since the franchise tag.

At the same time, I don't think Dunta's fallen off that much since last year. But then again, I can't say I've charted his plays, so I don't know for sure.

But neither does anyone else.

Dunta is pretty much an average CB, certainly nothing special that warrants his salary which is what everyone is upset about. Since it's not my money, I don't care except that cash could be used on better players.

Until we get a better CB, Dunta will continue to start, it's as simple as that. I don't think he'll be back next year in any case, because no matter what you think of Kubiak and Smith, I think they've seen the money is wasted on him. Unless Dunta accepts a salary more in line with what his talents are, he'll be playing for someone else next season. Dunta has done nothing this year to show he worth it.

The Texans defense has only had one wide receiver to have more than 100 yards receiving on them because the opposing offense is running the ball on them all day.

Dunta has only given up one 50yd play because they don't count the other plays in which he is flagged for pass interference every game. He would probably have given up more 50ydrs with a TD if he doesn't pass interfere.

Plus let's look at how many yards he gives up on catches in which the other team scores a TD on us.

It would be nice if they could come up with a list of his top ten tackles. Oh wait, nevermind...he's playing a puff season and whiffing on tackles left and right.

The guy used to bring it. Its obvious he is mad at the organization and has just plain decided to play at a minimum level.

Enjoy your time somewhere else Dunta....you won't get anywhere close to the contract you were offered last year.

+ penalties, + celebrating while Peyton is running a play. For a guy who put himself in dog doo doo - he's had a horrible year. If he hadn't started the year with his antics, we'd probably shrug his play off and say pay him whatever fair market value for his level of player is and keep an eye out for a new CB if we happen to find one.

I'm not over the whole silly-a$$ed shoe episode sufficiently enough to give Dunta a fair shake yet. But I salute you for bringing data (opinion??) that illustrates that he's an asset. Like you, I'm not totally convinced he's worth top 5 money.

...on the other hand, if he walked, what would we have to pay to replace him with similar (whatever you think that is) performance?
Do we really want to put McCain or Bennett or Quin or even Reeves on the other guy's #1 WR next year?

I'm one that believes Dunta is gone whether we want him here or not. So either way I'm thinking you go in to FA and the draft with understanding you have to replace Dunta.

It makes me laugh when writers rave about when athletes give a few thousand dollars to some charity or family. Sure, it's nice Dunta gave away $30k, but lets go ahead and do the math. If Dunta makes $10mil this year and gives away $30k, he has just given away .3% of his income. Not exactly a staggering number. Generous, yes, but certainly far from extraordinary. To put it in perspective, it would be like someone making $100k giving $300 to a charity. I'm sure many of you on here have easily given more than $300 to a charity or some other special cause. So lets not make this a bigger deal than it is. If only I got my name put in the paper anytime I gave away .3% of my income to the salvation army or some other charity...

Oh, and Dunta sucks. I don't need stats to tell me that. My eyes can see just fine.

According to ProFootballFocus.com, Dunta is the 96th ranked cornerback in the league. Since there are 32 teams with 2 starting corners ~ well, you do the math.

Dunta is missing tackles on a regular basis this year and he doesn't appear to be able to cover anyone.

Dunta's always been an average cornerback but because the Texans other cornerbacks suck hard, Dunta looks better.
