Its funny, but another QB is in the top of the draft coached by Jeff Tedford. I wish the Texans would think about this young man. He's a great teacher and he's produced a lot of young QB's who are in the NFL. He's a great offensive Coordinator as well. He signed a 5 year extension in December, but I think he might be available for the right price. He's going to make a great NFL coach some day. He was a very good QB in his own right. You might be surprised who he threw to in his college days. He's a winner. He's the real deal.

He would continue your association with ex-CFLers too. He played as a QB for 6 years in the CFL, including a stint with the Roughriders (so he wore the helmet you see in my avatar), and he coached for 3 years, all with the Calgary Stampeders.

A number of people have been yelling about streching the field and hitting the long bomb. What you have to realize is he knows how to do that. In college he threw to two wide receivers by the names of Henry Ellard and Stepen Page. It was fun watching the other team play an umbrella defense and watch a WR go streaking by them and the defender saying they can't obviously throw the ball that long. Well, they found out it could be done. The gentleman is very gifted and he knows how to teach receivers to boot. He's had a hand in getting Dilfer, Volick, Harrington, Boiller and the Current Cal QB set for the NFL. In fact I believe he even worked with Carr for a year. As I have said, he has served as the Offensive Coordinator as well. He has always excelled at every place he has been and is considered a fine gentleman. I think a person like Tedford would really fit well into the young Houston organization.

Tedford coached Carr for one year at fresno, then David almost left fresno because he was unhappy there, and almost went to oregon to play for tedford there, but didnt... tedford's QB have a habit of being good college QB's and it not translating to much in the NFL, but like i said, Carr was only with Tedford for a year, so i dont know if id qualify Carr as a Tedford QB or not...I think Carr is the best that Tedford has worked with

Tedford's record in college is great, the record of his players in the pros ain't so good. Espicially the QBs. Also any coach who can't adjust to Texas Techs system, espically when he had nearly a month to prepare, will get chewed up in the NFL. I might be willing to take him as an OC, but not straight into a head coach's job.

You know why he QBs have struggled a bit in the Pros...because he wasn't their coach anymore. And before you say anything, Dilfer has a ring on his finger and so too will Carr. Carr does credit Tedford for his development. I wonder how David got so good his senior year? HMMMMMMMMM.

Dilfer the summer before Carr's senior year had just finished his SB year. The Ravens let him go and he and Carr worked out all summer together. At least that's what I heard. Dilfer was under Tedford.

Tedford generally produces what are called "system" quarterbacks. One reason that David Carr had trouble reading defenses when he came here was because he was in Tedford's simple no-read system did not get Carr ready for the Pro game (if you look at Harrington and Dilfer....both of them had miserable starts to their careers, Dilfer finally came around after being a bust with Tampa Bay and Harrington is still struggling in Detroit). For 2 full years Carr would look to his first option and then totally ignore his secondary reads and dump down to his last option. That was one of the reasons I wasn't so high on Carr early on. He just didn't have a good feel for the pro game, but that was mainly due to playing in such a linear system under Tedford. The first year was lock on to Bradford, lock on...keep locking on then finally dump to Miller (or take a sack), in the next year it was lock on to AJ, lock on....lock on, then dump it down to his last option in Dom Davis totally ignoring his secondary reads (Bradford went from leading the team in receptions to being the invisible man...mainly because he was not the first or last read). Carr improved quite a bit last year and if you watch the games you can see he started to lock on less on his primary read. In the NFL you can't sit and wait for your first read to get open. You will get sacked over and over that way. You have to make your reads and anticipate where you throw the ball based on coverage and angles. You just can't wait to see if your WR is visibly open and make a second choice when you figure that your primary option is covered and it’s too late to do anything but check down to the dump pass. The fist year Carr was too slow to make a decision with the ball, year two he improved and last year he finally started to find Gaffney and his mid-read guys. Tedfords system works in College. I really have no urge to see him here.

The college scouting director concurred, and said teams who criticize Smith’s arm strength might not be studying him closely enough.

“The thing with (Cal coach Jeff) Tedford, he has those guys so programmed to the system that they look like they always make the right decisions. But if you break down the tape, that’s the only read they have. You know what I mean? The same was true of Trent Dilfer, Joey Harrington.

Yep, Akili Smith (another Tedford protege) sure did have a great NFL career....

Tedford didnt coach david his senior year, he coached david when david was a soph or a red shirted junior
