Mark Mangino a D-Bag

I get discipline in sports. Played them all my life, Coaches get mad. But a few of these things cross the line of decency. As a player that is when you slip in a "Jabba the Mangino."

Former Kansas wide receiver Raymond Brown, who was a senior last season, said Mangino would often "say personal, hurtful, embarrassing things in front of people.

Brown cited two examples. He said that once, his younger brother had been shot in the arm in St. Louis. Then came a game.

"I dropped a pass and [Mangino] was mad," Brown said. "And I said, 'Yes, sir. Yes, sir.' The yelling didn't bother me. But then he said, 'Shut up!' He said, 'If you don't shut up, I'm going to send you back to St. Louis so you can get shot with your homies.' I was irate. I wanted to hurt him to be honest with you."

Brown said another teammate had confided in the team that his father was an alcoholic and the player dreamed of becoming a lawyer.

"One day, [Mangino] said in front of the entire team, 'Are you going to be a lawyer or do you want to become an alcoholic like your Dad?' " Brown said

Said former Kansas wide receiver Marcus Herford, also a senior last season: "I remember that. Very vividly. [Mangino] would take your personal business and he would attack you with it. There's nothing wrong with being a disciplinarian. But there is a way to handle your players and keep them motivated. His way was to demotivate you and make you feel as low as you can go."

If this is true, then F him. But I also can't help but take this with a grain of salt. After all, it is firing season now. First he pokes a finger at a guy's chest and draws cries of abuse....and then this.

It seems like there's a full-court press by the Kansas AD to get rid of this guy. This story might be part of it.

I'd like to see if any other players come forward and confirm this story.

His AD probably would rather have a coach that works out 3 hours a day and has a nice tan.

I thought the same thing but started wondering why players in the pros or 5 ex-players would come back with these specific stories. I'd find it harder to believe if some players who were scrubs were like "he poked me too." But the verbal stories are detailed and from some good players it seems. I've had a coach grab my shoulder pad or facemask...not angrily, but to talk. Didn't bother me one bit. The using personal info stuff does.

I missed that part about 5 ex-players, but still some of this is reaching...

I love this quote.

"He'd say things like, 'I'll send you back to the street corner where you came from,' " Herford said.

"He'd say, 'This is Kansas, you're not back home,' " Crawford said. "He'd say, 'You're not back with your homies. If you're not careful you'll be watching the game in the stands with your homies. You'll be back in that neighborhood.' "

Any other coach in any other state would say "You're not in Kansas anymore." But I guess Mangino can't say that.

Mangino has a history of temper issues. He is a good coach however. We went from a coach in Terry Allen who was far too passive to Mangino. Allen gave the players free reign. We brought in Mangino to get the discipline back. He did that. I've met the man plenty of times. He's just an abrupt person. Compare the situation to Billy G at Kentucky. He was a good coach but didn't come off well to the media and to the public. With Kentucky basketball, that didn't work for long. For KU football, that was able to fly. We are a basketball school first. Mangino has done a very good job in bringing us to a national stage in a sense.

Now, with all of that said, some of these players just need to man up. I have classes with a lot of the guys and they say everything is being blown out of proportion. It mostly stems from a 2nd/3rd string LB who didn't like being pushed in practice. Certainly there have been other incidents, mostly with verbal abuse, but that is Mangino's style. If any of you had a hint of where our program was before he arrived, you would understand that his no-b.s. attitude was exactly what we needed at the time. There isn't a single person on this damn board that has any right to say something about him as a coach. He did what he was brought in to do. He took a job that very few people would want and had us ranked for a good part of 3 seasons. He's not the fan/media friendly coach, but he's a hard-nosed, hard-assed coach who gets the most out of his players.

Personally, I think his time was about to run out regardless of this matter. His relationship with some boosters is being rubbed the wrong way and a 5 game losing streak doesn't help heading down to Austin. He's done a fabulous job at KU. He won the freaking National Coach of The Year award. He was a top assistant at OU before he was hired at KU. The OU NC? The one where Stoops didn't choke? That was Mangino calling the plays. Bill Snyder at K-State? When that program was turned around? That was Mangino. When Mangino, Leach, and Stoops left that program, it feel apart and Snyder was essentially forced out. Mangino is a damn fine coach who has done a damn find job at our school. His time may be up, but it won't be for lack of effort.

He's not a players coach. He's had his moments. I think his time is up, but this was really blow out of the water. He yelled at his players and he pushed a DI, Big XII LB while he was in pads. I believe the "exact" incident was Mangino putting his finger into Arist Wright's chest during a practice. Honestly, that kid needs to man up. Mangino isn't doing himself any favors with his interviews, but he's being honest. He's saying exactly what every coach in America wants to say. He has essentially said that he can't erase 18 years of coddling by parents and coaches prior to him. They need to act like men. There have been a few players that have spoken against him, but there are more that have stood up for him, and I do mean former players. With that said, I think he is still out of luck with the job issue. Lew Perkins (KU AD) has dragged this into the public view, and hasn't made any comment other than to say there is an internal investigation. Silence isn't in favor of Mangino at this point. With all of that said, Mangino has run a fine program here, and he has shown the balls to say what every coach in America wants to say about the soft players and over-protective parents.
