Big 12 wants more BCS control over Bowl Games

This violates so many aspects of anti-trust laws, Congress will eventually have to control the BCS.

Last week, the NCAA's Division I Board of Directors agreed to sponsor legislation that would treat football teams with .500 records the same as teams with winning records for bowl participation. If the legislation passes, it would allow a bowl, that has to go outside its conference affiliation to fill a spot, to select a more attractive 6-6 BCS school over a 7- or 8-win non-BCS school.

Apparently the Big 12 is so bad when it comes to football that the league's commissioner is begging the NCAA to declare that any team that wins six games is automatically invited to a bowl game.

Sure it would. A playoff system would either eradicate the bowl games (or at least a fair number of them), or it would make the bowl games into playoff games. A 6-6 team is not going to make the playoffs.

There might still exist some completely worthless non-playoff bowl games, and I suppose the crappy teams could go to those.

And there lies the issue. There is so much money at stake for the conferences with the current bowl format. I would bet a large portion of the BCS conference school's income comes from the bowls. A playoff would severely shrink the amount of money they would get.They get millions more with 6-7 teams playing in bowls than they would with 1 or 2 teams playing in playoff games.

Good. Take the greed and the money away from them then. That's what should have happened a long time ago any way. These conference elitists make me sick with their side deals and money they make through their "good ole boy" system that hurts the competition of the sport and the fans. This is a sport with college athletes that don't even make any money. Why should the schools and these conference elitists get to fatten up their pockets at the expense of fair competition at it's best where the fans that make up the revenue for the sport get the long end of the stick? The power needs to be taken away from these people and so should the money. They've abused it for far to long.

To be honest, I rarely agree with you. But I agree with this entire statement except for the bolded part.

The talent gap between the elite BCS teams and the elite non-BCS teams is closing fast. The current system may hurt the fans but it isn't hurting the competition of the sport. If anything, right now college football is as good as it ever has been.

It does in the sense a BCS bowl would take a crappy Ohio State as an at large over a more deserving smaller school because OSU will put more butts in seats.

However, once you realize that other than the title game, BCS rankings have no relationship to BCS games, it makes much more 'sense.'

Ok, what if there is a playoff- top four teams. Then there are bowl games like there are now. The kids get extra games, the bowls get their money, fans get more football. I dont see the downside of my plan.

Oh, only the playoffs are in January. All the other bowls have to be in December.

The sole reason we don't have a playoff is because the big schools and the 4 BCS bowls are getting too much $$$$$$$$. I have YET to hear a LEGITMATE anti-playoff point from the mouth of those benefitting from the current system.

I particularly love the argument that the lack of a playoff system makes the regular season meaningful. The regular season is meaningful for just a handful of teams. Ask Boise St. how meaningful their regular season is. Ask TCU. Hell, ask a BCS team like Cincinnati.

Or any big school that has 2 losses. That whole 'regular season is a playoff' crapola only counts for about the top 10 BCS teams. For the other 100some schools, it is NOT a playfoff (baring oddities now and again).

Nothing like saying 'well, our season is over' half way through the season.

Yep. Any plausible playoff scenario would include the top ~8 teams with the rest playing the usual irrelevent bowls.

A playoff system wouldn't have anything to do with a 6-6 team playing a bowl game unless you're working from some pipe dream scenario.

I have never figured out what is so hard. Keep the bowls. Keep their payouts for derving teams, even if they have 6 wins. Turn your major bowls into the playoff games and rotate. As it is now there are limited BCS Bowls....4 with an added championship games. Add 2 more...Cotton and Gator say. Play 8 teams in 4 of those bowls. The semis in the other 2 and then have that championship game. You keep your bowls and rewards. You have a miniplayoff and you get your money with more exposure and hype than you had before.

Duh! If you have an 8 team playoff the BCS games (playoff games) would HAVE to let in a team like, an undefeated TCU instead, hrrrm, of an 8 win Notre Dame. Who would POSSIBLY want to see that? :eyeroll:

I mean, the poor bowl that gets stuck with an awesome matchup instead of two underserving big schools!!!

(yes, I even say this as an OSU fan - we benefit often from this stupidity)
