Good question. The NFL cap gurus must sign off on contracts as I understand. Bud Adams use to include businesses such as car washes, oil change, and car dealerships to entice players to sign. I understand he gave Earl Campbell a start at cattle ranching and former player Mac Haik a car dealership. The Texans have a cap specialist on payroll to avoid getting in trouble with NFL. :woot

So.. that would leave us with 6 to 8 million in cap space. Enough for ONE good pickup. Who do you think it could be? Im gonna say LaMont Jordan. We have wanted him forever and the jets are having cap issues.. as much as they want to resign him.. signing a backup RB probably wont be their highest priority.

Hes a franchise RB. We need a franchise RB. DD is great but unreliable with his injuries. Lamont Jordan.. god I hope we get him.

*crosses fingers and wishes on a shooting star*
You guys have so many holes to fill that I think blowing your proverbial cap load on a position where you already have depth would be a waste. Your comment on picking up no-namers was a good idea as there is a lot of bargain priced second tier talent to be had. It's one thing to strengthen an area of strength when you are the Patriots, and another when you are the Texans.

In terms of depth, I think you guys could use a viable vet qb who would come in cheap and give you some Carr insurance (bahahahahaha......uh anyway), your RB depth seems decent to me (is Wells a FA???) if you start this next season with the three you ended last year with - all healthy - you should be good enough in that are.

Wr's are decent enough to get the job done, maybe a mid round draft pick, or a cheap vet FA #2 or #3 caliber WR. TE could use a major upgrade.....Bubba? O-line ...good god, I'd draft O-line with your first three picks or find some upgrades in FA.

If DD gets hurt (hope it doesn't happen) we have Jonathon Wells. He showed great improvement last year. I think, and I hope, that will give DD some competition and cause both of them to keep stepping it up.

For anyone always wanting the Texans to do whatever it takes to get a player, take some time to look at the Redskins. Each and every year under their magnificent owner they are in cap hell and having to rework contracts and waive good players. Just 2 years ago they gave up a 1st round pick to get Coles and now because they continue to spend money with no regard to team chemistry and cost they have to get rid of him. With the biggest payroll in football, playing in the weaker conference and a weak division, the Redskins have 18 wins over the past 3 years and not even a sniff of a playoff appearance.

Houston is not a team that is going to have to overspend to get players for very long. This is a great city and very ideal for athletes since we don't have a state income tax. Casserly, McNair, and Capers will get the players the Texans need without sacrificing the future. I would rather go with a no name opposite Andre than to see us have to let Andre go because we can't afford 2 big name receivers. Something very special is being built down here. I hope they don't mess it up trying to make a huge splash.

So far so good. If everything proceeds as planned, this team will be playoff bound this year or next year. Hopefully both! :woot

It amazes me that so many of you think Capers will put the players we
need together in one year that he hasn't come close to doing in 3!...all
these holes we have to fill that will require playing time together to reach
any kind of acceptable level is not going to 'magically' happen because
the time frame of the 'plan' is HERE. :woot

I don't know if you've noticed but every year there seems to be a couple of the young players who keep stepping up. Last year we had quite a few like Faggins and Robinson on defense. Gaffney is showing promise as a possible #2 WR. Heck, even the o-line was finally starting to show signs of better blocking routes. Lots of those question marks will be filled by this year.

I guarantee it. -Chad Johnson

Default What?

"even the o-line was finally starting to show signs of better blocking routes.".

...your'e kidding, right? There was no offense against the Browns and
they had a field day sacking Carr! Pass protection is the knock against
the OL, not opening holes for the RB. Plus, we are going to need a lot
more than a "couple' of guys stepping up to just win, let alone make the
playoffs.

Yeah, our o-line needs alot of help. The last thing Carr needs is a concussion from all the sacks he's getting.

As things are.. its not Capers that is losing the game, its our Oline and our Dline.
Wish all the fans can realize the lines play is killing us.As you stated....get these problems fixed...and we can hang with anyone.

i dont think he will go in the first, but maybe in a later round, take a look at him, let his skills develop more... there are still a lot of technical things to be desired.... but he is a big boy... and he could be something if he does progress

Just read your "thoughts" & I think you nailed it!! Only caution I have is Johnson @ ILB? I've read he can't take on heads up, he needs to go lateral. If so, how can he go ilb in pros? 2nd, I like dd starting but we could use someone to take load off with a few (10-15)carries. That we should be able to get with 4-5 round or maybe cheap f/a.

Johnson is a great athlete.. if he ISNT strong going head to head (which I feel is more rumor, or people looking for something to nitpick).. then I have no doubt he can learn to be strong in it.

even so.. our chances of getting him are slim to none.

Id really like us to start stockpiling some picks.

Next draft.. Ngata, Wright, and Brooks will all be 1st round guys that we could REALLY REALLY use.

Default Question

"oline doesnt need many changes."

The new OL blocking did not change the pass blocking, so why did it fall
apart? Our OL just could not keep people away from Carr, even when we
out numbered them, and was not caused by zone run blocking!

Folks, we have got to get the OL pass protection failures solved or
we're going no where. Period. :woot

I feel that the change to zone blocking was a good change. At the beggining of the season the o-line was new at it and the running game had problems, but as the season progressed, I noticed that DD progression increased, and the line started to block better.

As happy as I was with the increase in run production, I was very dissapointed with the way the O-line performed in pass pro. I think we still need more help in pass pro if we can get it.

the pass protection suffered because of the numerous Oline changes. We had pitts moving to LG.. and Wand and Wade taking over the Tackle spots.

remember last year? we had pretty much our whole oline returning.. and they were actually getting fairly good. Olines need time to mesh.

So.. no.. we dont need many oline changes.. otherwise we would be shooting ourselves in the foot.
