Default Texans Defense vs. Colts

Indianapolis Colts at 15:00

1-10-IND 20 (15:00) P.Manning pass short left to D.Clark to IND 23 for 3 yards (E.Wilson).

Colts single back, 3-wides, TE strong left.
Texans in nickel.
Colts faked a ZBS run right.
Clark started on Antonio, then slipped out to the left.
Manning dumped a quick pass to Clark.
The LT started on Okoye, then released to take on Cushing.
Good thing Wilson came up quickly to make the tackle.
Cushing needed to read the LT quicker.

2-7-IND 23 (14:41) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to D.Clark to IND 34 for 11 yards (B.Pollard, J.Reeves).

Colts would run the no huddle throughout this series.
Texans in nickel.
Clark in slot right, ran a deep out pattern (straight up 11 yd then 90 degree cut to the outside.)
We were playing man-up tight on the 3 receivers.
Cushing gave Clark too much of a cushion.

1-10-IND 34 (14:21) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to P.Garcon to IND 39 for 5 yards (B.Cushing, D.Ryans).

Same formation for both teams.
Garcon ran a quick curl in on the right.
Reeves was doing the shuffle and got caught in mid-stride as Garcon stopped quickly and curled in.
Cushing got off Clark to make the tackle along with Ryand.
Pollard also came up.

2-5-IND 39 (14:01) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass short left to A.Collie to IND 49 for 10 yards (G.Quin).

Texans in tight man coverage, but no jamming.
Collie (left slot) ran a deep out pattern (like Clark did previously).
Quin was in the shuffle. Collie took one quick step in then broke outside.
He knows how to run the route.
Dunta broke of his man to contain the outside. Wilson also came up.
Quin recovered quickly, but the damage was done.

1-10-IND 49 (13:42) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass short left to D.Clark to HST 41 for 10 yards (G.Quin).

Texans played off-man.
Clark (right slot) ran a quick slant route.
Cushing just couldn't keep up with him.

1-10-HST 41 (13:24) (No Huddle, Shotgun) J.Addai right tackle to HST 37 for 4 yards (T.Jamison, J.Zgonina).

We changed personnel (bringing in Jamison and Barwin).
The Colts quickly went with a run.
They had combo blocks on the right and got just a little push on Zgonina.
Addai worked the small gap (very very small) and pushed himself up a few yards behind the double team.
Jamison set the edge well.

2-6-HST 37 (13:07) (No Huddle, Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short middle to A.Collie (G.Quin).

Texans played on-man.
Collie (left slot) put a quick out-and-in move on Quin to get separation on the quick slant.
Quin recovered nicely and broke off the pass.

3-6-HST 37 (13:02) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short right to A.Collie (G.Quin).

Texans played off-man, except for Quin who was up on Collie.
Quin broke off another pass on the same route.
We blitzed 5.
Cushing pushed Addai just into Manning as he threw the ball (just past the 2-sec mark).
That might have altered the ball very slightly.
The ball seems to be a little short, causing Collie to slow down just a hair.
Reeves got beat by Garcon down the field (but luckily Manning didn't have more time).

4-6-HST 37 (12:57) (Punt formation) PENALTY on HST-K.Bentley, Defensive Offside, 5 yards, enforced at HST 37 - No Play.

4-1-HST 32 (12:57) (Run formation) P.Manning pass incomplete deep right to J.Addai.

Colts in straight I, 2-TEs, single wide.
Texans rushed 4.
Colts faked a ZBS run right, Texans never bought it.
Max-protect for Manning.
Good coverage by Dunta on Wayne.
Texans was in single safety, with the help on Clark.
Cushing gave Addai a chuck within the 5yd limit. (This helped).
Okoye pushed his man almost 10yd into the backfield finally;
that forced Manning to throw the ball slightly out of rythm and out of bound.
Manning had a lot of time (more than 4 secs) but couldn't find an open receiver.
Great job of recognition by Cushing.
He was on the line, working on the other TE 47 Robinson.
But as soon as he saw Addai released, he switched quickly.
A little more time and Manning would probably complete the pass to Addai.
Cushing made a good play, but I wished he had given Addain a harder shove.
It would have been a shame had Manning been able to complete that pass after all of Cushing's good work.

BALL OVER ON DOWNS.

Default Re: Texans Defense vs. Colts

Indianapolis Colts at 10:59

1-10-IND 21 (10:59) D.Clark right end to IND 25 for 4 yards (D.Ryans, B.Pollard).
Clark end-around run from left to right.

Colts faked a run left; Mario LDE bought it.
Smith RDE penetrated to the inside of the TE 47
(who tried to sell the run fake by going first to his left and therefore gave Smith a head start to the inside).
Smith might have been held (???) just a tad by the TE, but he still needs to check the end-around instead of heading straight for Manning.
Perhaps he wanted to make sure that Manning doesn't try to set up a screen pass.
Mario overpursued and got caught in Okoye's block.
Reeves overran the outside containment.
Cushing got caught in the trash.
Good job by Demeco and Pollard joing together to make the tackle.

2-6-IND 25 (10:34) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short left to R.Wayne to IND 32 for 7 yards (G.Quin).

Texans played off-man, except for Reeves who was up on Garcon.
Not clear whether they were to drop back into a 5-2 or 4-3 zone.
Wayne ran a slant route underneath the slot receiver.
Quin switched off to make the tackle.
Texans rushed 4 with only Smith almost got there in about 2-1/2 secs, but the ball was already off.

1-10-IND 32 (10:11) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to D.Clark to IND 43 for 11 yards (B.Cushing).

Texans played man-up.
Clark ran a quick out. Cushing couldn't stay close with him.
Mario almost got there (about 2-1/2 secs), but the pass was already off.

1-10-IND 43 (9:51) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete deep right to P.Garcon.

Texans rushed 4. Plenty of time for Manning.
Garcon beat Reeves on the sideline but Manning's pass was long.
Pollard came up too early on a bad angle.
Luckily, the pass was just off-target.

2-10-IND 43 (9:45) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short left to J.Addai pushed ob at 50 for 7 yards (G.Quin).

Texans looked to be in zone with nobody checking soon enough on Addai out of the backfield.

3-3-50 (9:29) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short left to R.Wayne.
PENALTY on HST-Du.Robinson, Defensive Pass Interference, 7 yards, enforced at 50 - No Play.

A close call on a slant route.
Either Dunta would break off the pass or Wayne would get the first down.
No biggie there.
We had two stunts going on with both DTs to the outside that could have gotten there in about 2-1/2 secs, but again the pass was already off.
(Cody, Bulman)

1-10-HST 43 (9:25) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to J.Addai to HST 25 for 18 yards (G.Quin, D.Ryans).

Looks like Quin was to come up for the blitz (with an eye on Addai, supposedly.)
When he stopped, probably thinking he won't be able to get there,
he should have followed Addai instead of dropping back the other way.
Our 2 LBs had dropped deep into zone coverage to follow the TE and slot receiver.
When Addai turned to his right and Quin went the other way, Addai was wide open.
(Both Reeves and Dunta had also followed the wide-outs deep.)

1-10-HST 25 (8:56) (Shotgun) PENALTY on IND-R.Diem, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at HST 25 - No Play.

1-15-HST 30 (8:38) C.Simpson left end to HST 28 for 2 yards (D.Ryans).
Colts stretch run right.

Great reads by Dunta and Demeco.
Dunta came up and cut down the pulling LT beyond the LOS, essentially shut down the running lane.
Demeco pushed the LG into the running lane to make the tackle.

2-13-HST 28 (8:09) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short left to D.Clark to HST 21 for 7 yards (E.Wilson).

Quick stop route for Clark who gave Cushing a little shove to get seperation;
Cushing was still having a difficult time staying with Clark on the short routes.
It's pretty much like the Texans want to keep the play in front of their LBs, willing to give up the short ones to Manning.

3-6-HST 21 (7:39) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to D.Clark to HST 14 for 7 yards (B.Cushing).

A shallow out route for Clark on Cushing again.
Too much time. Pass was off in about 3 secs.
Okoye penetrated through the double team in the middle and put a hit on Manning, but it was too late.
Both Mario and Smith went wide.

1-10-HST 14 (7:13) (Shotgun) J.Addai up the middle to HST 14 for no gain (T.Bulman).

Jamison and Mario set the edges.
Bulman pushed the RG into the running lane to make the tackle.

2-10-HST 14 (6:51) P.Manning pass short right to P.Garcon to HST 7 for 7 yards (B.Pollard, B.Cushing).

Reeves played 6 yds off LOS, backpedaled and gave Garcon a bit too much of a cushion.

3-3-HST 7 (6:26) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short middle to J.Addai for 7 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

Texans dropped too deep into the 4-3 zone (ie. Demeco in the middle).
The Center released and picked off Quin easily.
Zgonina needs to hold off the double team.
Instead, he was sidestepped by Saturday and lost his balance.
Basically, we just didn't pay enough attention to Addai.

M.Stover extra point is GOOD, Center-J.Snow, Holder-P.McAfee.
HST 0 IND 7, 12 plays, 79 yards, 1 penalty, 4:39 drive, 8:40 elapsed

Default Re: Texans Defense vs. Colts

Indianapolis Colts at 6:04

1-10-HST 45 (6:04) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass deep right to P.Garcon to HST 19 for 26 yards (J.Reeves).
Penalty on HST-B.Pollard, Illegal Contact, declined.

Reeves got the run-around by Garcon and gave up another pass.
I believe the penalty is also on Reeves, but they called #31 for it.
Pollard had come up to take on the releasing TE.
(They were not in contact with each other throughout the play).

1-10-HST 19 (5:48) (Shotgun) J.Addai right guard to HST 13 for 6 yards (B.Pollard).

Mario set the edge on the TE; Cody went wide with the RG (and out of the play).
The RT and the pulling LG neutralized Cushing and Demeco.

2-4-HST 13 (5:16) (Shotgun) P.Manning sacked at HST 20 for -7 yards (B.Cushing).
PENALTY on HST-A.Smith, Defensive Offside, 5 yards, enforced at HST 13 - No Play.

We came with a 6-man blitz up the middle and got to Manning.
Too bad, Smith jumped off-side.

1-8-HST 8 (5:01) P.Manning pass short left to P.Garcon to HST 4 for 4 yards (E.Wilson).
PENALTY on HST-M.Williams, Defensive Offside, 4 yards, enforced at HST 8 - No Play.

Mario's turn to commit off-side.

1-4-HST 4 (4:43) J.Addai right tackle to HST 5 for -1 yards (B.Cushing).

Mario set the edge on the TE;
Okoye pushed the double team (RT & RG) beyond the LOS and into the running lane;
Cody took on the double team (C & LG).
That freed up Cushing to shoot up the middle to make the tackle.

2-5-HST 5 (4:11) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short right to J.Addai.
Texans blitzed 5 (never got there).
Manning went quickly with the hot receiver Addai (who lined up wide right).
Addai ran an quick slant route inside and dropped the ball right at the one-yd line.
Cushing was on him, but that was a drop ball.

3-5-HST 5 (4:07) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short left to R.Wayne to HST 4 for 1 yard (Du.Robinson).
Penalty on IND-A.Collie, Offensive Pass Interference, declined.

Great play by Dunta.
Collie held Quin trying to stop him from helping on the tackle.

4-4-HST 4 (4:02) M.Stover 22 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-J.Snow, Holder-P.McAfee.
HST 0 IND 10, 6 plays, 41 yards, 2 penalties, 2:07 drive, 11:03 elapsed

Default Re: Texans Defense vs. Colts

Indianapolis Colts at 1:41

1-10-IND 20 (1:41) P.Manning pass incomplete short right to C.Simpson (B.Cushing).

Difficult situation for Cushing.
He did very well to follow the RB on that play,
after checking both the TE and RB out of the backfield.
May have gotten away with a pass interference there.
But that's how I think I like for him to attack the play.
Would love to see him doing that against Clark earlier!
(Not that he was doing badly... I didn't like how Bush set up the D...
But I also think that Cush could have attacked his man a little stronger
like he did in this play.)

2-10-IND 20 (1:36) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short left to R.Wayne pushed ob at IND 35 for 15 yards (Du.Robinson).

We showed a lot of movements up front, but Manning was just too smart for it.
He can see that Dunta was to drop back into a 3-deep zone, and he exploited it well.
Quin had to wait to chuck the slot receiver before he can slip outside into his zone.
By that time, Manning had already delivered the good.

1-10-IND 35 (1:18) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short middle to D.Clark to IND 41 for 6 yards (B.Cushing).

The surgeon was back to work.
Soon as he saw Cushing drop back in coverage, he and Clark knew what to do.
They would take anything the D gave them.

2-4-IND 41 (:50) P.Manning pass short left to R.Wayne to HST 48 for 11 yards (D.Ryans).

We came with a very weak 3-4 look; all CBs playing off-man.
Easy picking for Manning.
The announcer agreed with me that it's best to jam these receivers, especially Clark at the line.
We hardly did that.
Basically, we played even softer than the Richard Smith defense of old, LOL!

1-10-HST 48 (:21) P.Manning pass short right to D.Clark to HST 41 for 7 yards (B.Cushing, J.Reeves).

Another simple pass to Clark with Cushing play off-man.

END OF QUARTER

Default Re: Texans Defense vs. Colts

Indianapolis Colts continued.

2-3-HST 41 (15:00) C.Simpson left tackle to HST 40 for 1 yard (J.Zgonina, S.Cody).
Colts ZBS run weak side left.
Smith set the edge on the LT.
Zgonina pushed the C into the running lane (LG released).
Cody pushed the RT into the running lane (RG released).
They clamped up the RB for just a one-yd gain.
So far, the Colts O-line is doing a worse job than ours in the running game.

3-2-HST 40 (14:16) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short left to D.Clark (B.Cushing).
PENALTY on HST-B.Cushing, Defensive Holding, 5 yards, enforced at HST 40 - No Play.

Quick pass. Incomplete.
It was a very close call on Cushing for getting there a little early.

1-10-HST 35 (14:12) P.Manning pass incomplete short right to R.Wayne.
PENALTY on HST-D.Ryans, Defensive Pass Interference, 12 yards, enforced at HST 35 - No Play.

An easy slant route for Wayne crossing the middle with no resistance at all
until Demeco came up in his zone and jumped on Clark before the pass arrived.

1-10-HST 23 (14:07) P.Manning pass short right to A.Collie pushed ob at HST 2 for 21 yards (G.Quin).
Penalty on HST-A.Smith, Defensive Offside, offsetting, enforced at HST 23 - No Play.
Penalty on IND-J.Saturday, Offensive Holding, offsetting.

Looks like we got the benefit of the call here.
I thought Bulman jumped offside (not Smith) up the middle past the Center Saturday.
It was a complete pass to Collie at our 3-yd line.

1-10-HST 23 (13:49) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short right to J.Addai.

They set up a screen pass for Addai, but he dropped another pass.

2-10-HST 23 (13:44) J.Addai left end to HST 19 for 4 yards (D.Ryans).

Okoye and Bulman (DTs) beat the two Guards and shut down the running lane inside.
Addai cut outside for 4 yds.
RDE Jamison went wide and was pushed away from the play by the LT.

3-6-HST 19 (13:01) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete deep left to J.Addai.

They had Addai ISO on Cushing on a fly route along the left side line.
The pass was long. Addai had a step or two on Cush.
Does not necessarily mean that he can pull in the catch;
especially with Wilson coming over for help at the top.
Addai also stumbled out of the gate and that threw off the timing of the pass.

(We did play bump and run on the other receivers on this play,
but Manning had set sight on Addai from the get go.)

4-6-HST 19 (12:55) M.Stover 37 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-J.Snow, Holder-P.McAfee.
HST 0 IND 13, 10 plays, 61 yards, 2 penalties, 3:51 drive, 2:10 elapsed

We worked too hard to limit the Colts to a FG there.
And we were lucky as well.

Indianapolis Colts at 11:20

1-10-IND 36 (11:20) P.Manning pass short left to J.Addai to IND 41 for 5 yards (D.Ryans).
With RDE Smith threatening the inside, Manning quickly went with the safety valve.
We were in nickel throughout so far, Demeco needed to get up on Addai a little quicker.

2-5-IND 41 (10:45) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short right to D.Clark (M.Williams).
Colts faked a run left.
They optioned Mario, hoping that he would pursue the RB.
Mario read it nicely, and jumped up to bat the ball down.

3-5-IND 41 (10:42) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short middle to D.Clark to HST 46 for 13 yards (B.Cushing, Du.Robinson). P16

We rushed 4 and never got there. (Nickel but with a 3-man line & Barwin standing up.)
Cushing gave Clark too much room; he also slipped.
Easy completion for a first down.
We jammed the other receivers, but not Clark since he was in motion behind the LOS.

1-10-HST 46 (10:12) J.Addai right guard to HST 42 for 4 yards (B.Pollard).

Same defensive line up. Demeco got picked by the Center. Cush by the RT.
Pollard came up to make the play.

2-6-HST 42 (9:41) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short left to D.Clark to HST 37 for 5 yards (E.Wilson, B.Pollard) [B.Cushing].

Back to the 4-man line.
We blitzed 6 and would have gotten there in about 2-1/2 secs
Cush stunted around the Center.
Addai waited to take on Demeco.
That left Cushing free to put Manning on his back.
We didn't have anybody to pick up Clark quickly enough.
But we did stop him 1-1/2 yd short of the first down.

3-1-HST 37 (9:02) J.Addai right guard to HST 39 for -2 yards (A.Smith).

Okoye held off the double team C & RG at the LOS (this helped Cushing.)
Mario and Barwin clamped up both sides.
Smith penetrated outside the LG.
Cushing was free to come up the middle.
(The LG was hesitant to decide on which guy to take on.)

A good series for the D.

4-3-HST 39 (8:27) P.McAfee punts 28 yards to HST 11, Center-J.Snow, fair catch by J.Jones.

Indianapolis Colts at 2:00

1-10-IND 20 (2:00) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short left to R.Wayne (G.Quin).

I think we dropped back into a 3-deep zone with Dunta.
That was why Wayne had all the room on the outside.
Good job by Quin to string out quickly to his zone and broke off the pass.

2-10-IND 20 (1:54) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short middle to D.Clark (G.Quin).

We dropped back into a 3-deep zone again (this time with Demeco in the middle).
Another good job by Quin to get up in his zone, wrapped his arms around Clark, and did not allow him to hold on to the ball.
on another quick pass by Manning.

3-10-IND 20 (1:50) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete short middle to D.Clark (E.Wilson).
PENALTY on HST-E.Wilson, Unnecessary Roughness, 15 yards, enforced at IND 20 - No Play. X17

Same 3-deep zone. Wilson played his zone well and get up to the dead spot quickly.
Too bad he laid a forearm on Clark's helmet.

1-10-IND 35 (1:46) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short left to R.Wayne ran ob at IND 48 for 13 yards.

Another 4-3 zone; McCain wasn't quick enough to his outside zone.
Easy first down for Clark.
Mario almost got there in just past 2 secs.

1-10-IND 48 (1:38) P.Manning pass short right to D.Clark to HST 46 for 6 yards (D.Ryans).

4-3 zone and another quick pass.
Cushing needed to get up into his zone quicker.

2-4-HST 46 (1:25) (No Huddle) P.Manning pass incomplete short right to P.Garcon (B.Pollard).

Not sure if was a 2-deep zone or man coverage.
Either way, Reeves got beat to the inside on a quick pass.
Good thing Pollard came up and laid the hit that jarred the ball loose.

3-4-HST 46 (1:21) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short left to J.Addai ran ob at HST 34 for 12 yards.

Texans were in man. The slot man brushed across Demeco's face, giving Addai time to string out to the side line.

1-10-HST 34 (1:17) P.Manning pass short left to R.Wayne ran ob at HST 22 for 12 yards.

Texans blitzed 6. Colts max-protect with 7.
We played off Wayne, perhaps looking for an INT with Pollard while Dunta backing up.

1-10-HST 22 (1:12) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass incomplete deep left to A.Collie.

Texans in man coverage. McCain was in-step with Collie.
Pass was long.

2-10-HST 22 (1:07) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short middle intended for J.Addai INTERCEPTED by B.Pollard at HST 14. B.Pollard to 50 for
36 yards (R.Lilja).

Pollard was spying on Manning the whole time from the far side.
He read it beautifully.
We blitzed 5. Barwin almost got there in about 2-1/2 sec

I love the breakdown of how much time we are giving the QB... How are you doing that?

It seems to me that, while the pressure isn't consistent, we are getting reasonably good pressure. Certainly more than our sack total would indicate. Do you agree with that assessment?

Also, does it seem to you that we are playing more man on the outside and zone with LBs? What coverages would that be? I would think cover2 would look like Man on the outside on certain routes. But, what would be examples of combo coverages with only one safety deep? and do we do much of it?

thanks again, 76Texan. I look forward to your play by plays every week!

It seemed to me that we got our best results when we went to bump & run instead of giving the WR's a 5-10 yd cushion. The announcers talked all 1st quarter about how Manning said he was gonna light us up if we showed him nothing but nickel, and that's exactly what he did.

You're right.
We played bump and run better.
I had mentioned about this when scouting the Colts.
I think our guys match up well with them.
They are not more physical in the one-on-one match up with us.

Wayne may have lost 1/2 a step, and he really doesn't have the best moves of the top receivers in the league. Dunta should be able to stay with him.
Garcon and Reeves probably has around the same speed, and he's not the most ellusive receiver out there (even though he can still beat Reeves at time, but Reeves does have the recovery speed).

I would take Quin over Collie in the slot.

Cushing has better speed than Clark. He can recover if Clark gets off the jam.

But I wasn't surprised that we played the Colts this way.
(About the same as last year.)

And we have better personnel now.
We can limit the Colts to about 21 points (theoretically) and we did.

We hoped we can score a few more points to win the game, which we almost did.
We made more mistakes and that killed us.

This is one of the few games that we brought the most pressure in Kubiak's tenure with the Texans.

I don't know when I'll have more time for the rest.
I had everything in my head, but not in writings.
I will refrain from talking about coverage until I'm through with it all.

But basically, we mixed things up.
Man off, man on, different zones, combinations...

With Bush's background coaching and playing with the Tacks/Oilers I can see him bringing the heat. I just think the db's have to show him they can go man to man first. They are showing they can cover one on one more and more every week.

Default Re: Texans Defense vs. Colts

The Colts had only one offensive drive in the third quarter, so I thought I'd stretched things a bit!

The summary in highlights.

2ND HALF

Indianapolis Colts at 8:31, (1st play from scrimmage 8:27)

1-10-IND 46 (8:27) P.Manning pass short right to R.Wayne to IND 46 for no gain (J.Reeves).

Colts in single back, TE strong right, Garcon split right, Collie slot left, Wayne split left.
Texans in their usual nickel, 2-deep safeties.
(We were to drop Demeco back into 3-deep if it was to be a pass, and benefited from this D-call.)

Wayne went in motion to inside the slot receiver on the left,
then continued on behind the LOS to the other side (the strong side right) as the ball was snapped.

The Colts faked a ZBS run weak side left
(in which case, Wayne would block the pursuing LDE -
like we use Walter or Anderson to cut block the DE on the back side of the run).

Wayne would continue on past our LDE Smith, took the quick pass from Manning,
and wanted to turn upfield as he ran past the numbers.

Garcon went outside, Reeves gave him a chuck to pass him off to the deep safety Pollard and get ready to monitor his zone.
As he turned back to look at the QB, he was in good position to see the pass to Wayne.
Reeves also saw Clark heading directly toward him for a block.
Reeves took a couple of shuffle steps and then a hard step right to brace himself for Clark.

By this time, Cushing had stretched his zone to the outside to follow Wayne, discouraging him from turning upfield.
Good reaction by Reeves to step back to the outside and up (leaving Clark in the dirt).
Basically, Cushing chased Wayne right into Reeves, who made a great tackle for no gain.

A call for Clark to take a pass in the seam would have given the Colts the usual 5-10 yds.
But Clark never looked for the ball; his sole intention was to put a block on Reeves.

In that case, Cushing would have been a little late to his zone.
Even in this instance, actually Cushing was still late;
if he had started to his zone earlier, he would have nailed Wayne for a loss.
But who am I to complain about a stop for no gain, LOL!

2-10-IND 46 (7:59) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to D.Clark pushed ob at HST 47 for 7 yards (B.Cushing).

Another short, easy pass to Clark who ran a quick-out route underneath Garcon.
Not much Cush can do here.
However, he was close enough to Clark and the sideline;
it would have been "nice" to see him give Clark a big lick instead of simply shoving him out of bound.
Maybe he wanted to make sure to have two hands on Clark.
(But Cush didn't play up to the standard of the house of pain here, LOL!)

At any rate, the reason Cush was quick to Clark is due to the fact that he was getting to his outside zone.
This time, we dropped Reeves back into the 3-deep zone (he played off Garcon from the start.)
We can see this zone more clearly by observing Quin who passed the slot receiver (on the other side) to Demeco,
and stayed in his zone to check on the releasing RB.

Timeout #1 by IND at 07:26.
We showed a rare 3-4 look with Barwin at LOLB (but still in the nickel package) that Maning didn't like and called time-out.

3-3-HST 47 (7:26) (Shotgun) P.Manning scrambles left end to HST 45 for 2 yards (B.Pollard).

Colts put Clark at wide out on the left side.
We counter by bringing Pollard up to the LOS to play man-up on him.
We played press man coverage across the board, with Wilson as the lone safety.

Barwin stayed in; Texans went back to the normal front 4.

We blitzed 6
Both Mario (RDE) and Barwin (LDE) came off the edges past their men and would have gotten there right around the 2-sec mark;
Manning had no choice but to step up the pocket.
Okoye pushed the RG (66) into the backfield, forcing Manning to scramble outside.
Ryans also got the upperhand on the C (63) with a spin move to the inside and made Manning go wider.

(Cushing was smart enough to stop trying to penetrate and chased Addai, the safety valve for Manning out of the backfield.
This probably dissuaded Manning to try a shovel pass to Addai less him risk an INT for Cush and a TD)

Pollard came up strong; Manning slid to avoid the hit and was short of the first down by a yard.
Barwin also came back very quickly, never giving up on the play.
(Pollard may have gotten away with a late hit.
I wouldn't be surprised if they had given "Forehead" the benefit of the call.
Clark may have helped us out by coming back toward Manning, bringing Pollard with him.)

3 and out was what we needed.
Good job by the D.

4-1-HST 45 (6:46) P.McAfee punts 29 yards to HST 16, Center-J.Snow, fair catch by J.Jones

Default Re: Texans Defense vs. Colts

4th QUARTER

Indianapolis Colts at 14:58

1-10-IND 20 (14:58) J.Addai right end pushed ob at IND 30 for 10 yards (B.Pollard). R21

Colts in single back, TE strong right (Clark at normal TE spot).
They pulled the RT Diem for a stretch run strong side right.

Clark kept LDE Bulman at bay throughout (key block).
Bulman would have done better to keep pushing Clark toward the play instead of trying to get off.
This would force both the RT and Addai to go wider;
it would take Addai longer to turn upfield and give our guys time to pursue.

Ryans was a little late to fill the outside gap.
Ryans should have read the LT and the stretch run just a little sooner.

Quin did a pretty decent job pushing the slot receiver toward the runner;
but Reeves overpursued a bit and was taken outside by the wide-out (extra 2-4 yds for Addai).
He would have been better off taking down his blocker to cut off the running lane.

Good job by Pollard.

1-10-IND 30 (14:42) P.Manning pass incomplete short right to P.Garcon.
Quick slant route for Garcon; ball was a little low but can still be a shoe-string catch.
LDT Okoye pushed the RG close to Manning in a hurry.
That probably made him alter the throw a bit.

2-10-IND 30 (14:39) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to D.Clark to IND 39 for 9 yards (B.Cushing).

Demeco dropped back into the 3-deep zone.
Garcon ran a quick in-and-out route between the two short zones (between Reeves and Cushing)
to draw both defenders toward the seam.
Clark ran the underneath stop route for another quick and easy reception in front of Reeves.

Manning could have gone long for Garcon but he took the safe throw.
He had looked to the right then toward the middle and saw Demeco dropping back deep.
He read the 4-3 zone and automatically went with the pass in the seam of the short zones.

3-1-IND 39 (13:59) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to P.Garcon to IND 46 for 7 yards (D.Ryans). P22

Texans played man-up.
Garcon simply ran a quick slant route toward the middle.
Hard to tell if we were in zone or man.
Either way it was difficult to defend that quick pass.
If it was man then Reeves got beat just a tad (but not much he can do about it.)

For consolation, Demeco got a lick on Garcon to mark his territory.

1-10-IND 46 (13:34) (Shotgun) P.Manning sacked at IND 40 for -6 yards (M.Williams).

With a quick double move, Mario went past the LT and was on Manning in a flash.LDE Smith pancaked the RG... just ran right over him.

2-16-IND 40 (13:13) (Shotgun) P.Manning pass short right to P.Garcon to HST 45 for 15 yards (B.Pollard).

Here's the risk in jamming the receiver.
Garcon took Reeves to the outside and got off him too quickly back to the inside with good hand technique.

Not clear whether Demeco intended to dropped into 3-deep or we were to play 2-deep, one-medium (Demeco) and 4-short.

Pollard came up just soon enough to stop Garcon from making the first down.
(It was 2 and 16 and he gained 15, giving the Colts 3rd and 1.)

Manning stepped up the pocket smartly and any presumed pressure was off.
Another pass to the dead spot in the zone.

3-1-HST 45 (12:45) P.Manning pass incomplete short left to R.Wayne (Du.Robinson).
PENALTY on HST-C.Barwin, Defensive Offside, 5 yards, enforced at HST 45 - No Play. X23

Plenty of time for Manning (that doesn't happen often a lot in this game.)
Great play by Dunta with a big hit on Wayne to break off the pass on the side line;
too bad we were called for off-side (a very close call.)

Looked like Reeves and Dunta had dropped into a 3-deep zone with Pollard charging up.
Good job by Dunta coming back up.

But what I like here also is that Quin was very quick to the outside zone
(after he had given the slot receiver a chuck);
he was pretty close to have a hand on the ball.

1-10-HST 40 (12:38) R.Wayne pass deep right intended for P.Garcon INTERCEPTED by B.Pollard at HST 24. B.Pollard ran ob at HST 24 for
no gain.
Penalty on IND-P.Garcon, Offensive Pass Interference, declined.

Good job by Cushing reading the play;
The Colts faked a run left; Cush was getting up to that side to fill the gap
when he recognized the reverse very quickly.
He tunrned back immediately and charged hard along with Reeves to help Wayne hurry the throw.

Reeves had given Garcon a little chuck and released him to Pollard who cut in front for the INT.Pollard played a whale of a game!

A slow developing play that doesn't make a whole lot of sense against the zone.
I'm glad the Colts ran it!
