Default Texans sign LB Freeman 11/4/09

Texans | Freeman signs
Wed, 04 Nov 2009 14:45:51 -0800

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Houston Texans signed free-agent LB Marcus Freeman (Bills) Wednesday, Nov. 4. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Somebody remind me. Maybe Yankee can this guy was a 5th rd. draft pick out of Ohio St. Was he very good? I cannot remember the name.

Looks like he was a fifth round rookie that did not make it out of camp? I thought if you were drafted in the fifth round they would keep you for at least a season, thats odd.

According to Scout.com he was eligible for the 2009 draft.

Quote:
2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person
Marcus Freeman, OLB, Ohio State
Marcus Freeman would be the star of most defensive units across the country, but at Ohio State he's often overlooked because of James Laurinaitis and Malcolm Jenkins. Freeman saw time on special teams as a freshman in 2004, then red shirted because of injury during 2005. When he returned in 2006 (his first year as a starter), he put together a solid season with 71 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 interceptions, and 6 passes broken up in coverage. He recorded a career high 15 tackles that year in the National Championship Game against Florida. His junior year saw another significant improvement in production, when Freeman tallied 109 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 5 passes broken up in coverage, and 2 forced fumbles. He has had a chance to showcase his versatility while at Ohio State, showing he can play the weak side, strong side, or middle linebacker positions depending on what his team needs. The reason Freeman can move to any position and be so productive is his speed. Like his teammate Laurinaitis, Freeman also has the speed to tackle from sideline to sideline, and always swarms to the football. He is excellent dropping into coverage, and can smother tight ends, running backs, and even play against the slot. He is important to the Buckeye pass rush, because he can take away a team's check down option, forcing the quarterback to hold onto the ball. Freeman has had a down year (for him) stats wise, recording only 84 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and also broken up 4 passes in coverage this season. Freeman will likely be a third round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, but a productive off season and a good combine could vault him into the second round.
He must have went undrafted, since he isn't listed as one of their '09 picks.

Found this interesting...

Why do you think Marcus Freeman was cut? --Danny Mack

Marcus Freeman was a dud from the beginning. Bears scouts thought he would be pretty athletic based on his pre-draft testing, but Freeman did not play as athletically as he tested. He has a prototype NFL body, but he doesn't move like a prototype NFL linebacker. What's more, he didn't show a lot of intensity or fire. It wasn't even close with him, and even if the Bears had to put a linebacker on injured reserve, I would doubt if they would bring him back.

Funny he landed on the Bills practice squad not the bears and then was cut by the bills

Me too! He was a very good college LB. I gave him a late 3rd to fourth round grade. If he comes here with the right attitude he has the ability. Sometimes it jsut takes the right situation. Hopefully our coaches can get him to play up to tht ability where the others have failed.

I think we're still trying to find more speed for our special teams.
we've gone thru 3-4 LBs in the past month... five if you count Chaun Thompson.

Quote:
11/4/2009 -- Placed TE Owen Daniels on the reserve/injured list. Signed DE Jesse Nading to the active roster from the practice squad. Signed LB Marcus Freeman and TE Dezmond Sherrod to the practice squad.
10/30/2009 -- Signed DE Tim Jamison from the practice squad. Waived LB Jamie Winborn.
10/22/2009 -- Signed DE Tim Jamison to the practice squad. Released WR Darnell Jenkins from the practice squad.
10/21/2009 -- Signed LB Jamie Winborn.
10/21/2009 -- Released DE Tim Jamison.
10/14/2009 -- Signed G Tutan Reyes. Placed G Mike Brisiel on the reserve/injured list. Signed LB Darnell Bing to practice squad. Released LB Buster Davis from practice squad.
10/7/2009 -- Signed RB Chris Henry and LB Buster Davis to the practice squad.
10/6/2009 -- Placed LB Khary Campbell on the reserve/injured list (got hurt on S/Ts). Signed DE Tim Jamison to the active roster from the practice squad. Released TE Clark Harris from the practice squad.
Oh and does anyone know about the TE we picked up, Dezmond Sherrod??

A blocking TE from Mississippi state, not much of a pass catcher

Coaching can only do so much, to me its more hoping he is tired of being cut and the light is finally going off. Sometimes you have to gamble that a player finally understands he can only have so many chances. If he finally has fire, he'll stick.

Default Re: Texans sign LB Freeman 11/4/09

could have been overwhelmed in Chicago? thought he was good value in 5th, projected late 2nd early 3rd a week or two before the draft. I agree for now he is just special team fodder then see how hard he works to actually get pt. could be effective WILL - best in coverage not strong run defender but with Frank Bush success so far with this unit you really knows?

I did get a kick out of this tidbit - Freeman 10th Cushing 7th - http://ohiostate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=881765

Quote:
7. OLB Brian Cushing, USC
THE BUZZ: Cushing possesses an ideal build to play outside linebacker; he has a thick lower body and muscular upper half, with long arms. A knee injury caused him to miss most of the 2007 season. Cushing is an aggressive linebacker who loves to attack the line of scrimmage. He plays with good power and technique and does a good job fighting through blocks. He has a consistent motor and has a great first step. He has the ability to rush the passer as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme and does a nice job fighting off blocks. Cushing lacks a lateral burst and struggles making offensive linemen whiff; he is more of a straight-line athlete. He does have exceptional closing speed and a nose for the ball. He could be looked at as a strongside 'backer or weakside end in the 4-3 or an outside 'backer in the 3-4, and he should be successful in any role.
Quote:
10. OLB Marcus Freeman, Ohio State
THE BUZZ: He has good lower-body thickness and girth in his base. Freeman is a smart, instinctive player who does a nice job quickly reading and reacting. He does an excellent job finding the football and rarely takes a false step, and he always seems to be flowing toward the play. He is always shooting the right gaps and filling the right lanes. He's a sure tackler who breaks well down in space and takes proper angles to the ball. He's a natural athlete with good range and burst out of his stance, and he consistently makes plays all over the field. He does a great job sniffing out running plays and has the athleticism to cover man-to-man. There aren't many negatives on this guy, and he looks like one of the safest picks at linebacker in the 2009 class.
