after reading some of the responses in the latest JaMarcus Russell thread, it's clear everyone was pretty spot-on about him sucking.
but what are some recent players you thought would be AWESOME but have gone completely the other way? sticking with the Raiders, i said Darren McFadden was a better prospect than Adrian Peterson. to be fair, i thought Peterson was the best RB prospect ever the year before. i just thought McFadden would be better.

Here are some of my recent mishaps...
2008: I thought Matt Ryan was overrated. Oops. I thought Brian Brohm was the best QB in the draft. Ouch. 2007: I thought Adam Carriker was the best D lineman in the draft. I thought Leon Hall would be better than Darrelle Revis. 2006: I thought Vince Young would eventually be the best QB in the class. I thought Michael Huff was a sure thing. |

I remember being really stoked about mendenhall and antoine cason. Gonna have to do some digging in this topic.

As far as NFL busts go that I thought would be great players well............... Michael Huff - I can't believe this guy has never amounted to much in Oakland. Yeah, he may be in Oakland but that hasn't stopped their shut down corner from being great at his position. I thought Huff was a can't miss guy. Dwayne Jerritt - The big tall WR out of USC. I thought he would be great in the NFL because of his size and his hands he had in college. He really knew how to use his size to climb up and grab balls. I thought he would be similar to Calvin Johnson in that class. Boy, was I wrong on that one. Bobby Carpenter - He was a fantastic LB in college at OSU. Hell, I thought that entire trio of LB's they had would be can't miss guys. They were all so effective. Carpenter was all over the place when I watched him in college. I thought the Cowboys had gotten him for a steal when they did. He hasn't done anything ever since. Last edited by Texecutioner; 10-26-2009 at 01:42 PM. |

I think I miss more on under rating players. I remember yelling at the TV screen "Demeco who?"

Well Mendenhall got hurt like in his 2nd game last season, and now he has become the starter and has played pretty well for the Steelers the last few games. He's blocking well as a RB as well. I don't think you can call him a bust right now when he's taken over the position in his first year of being healthy.

I'll be the first to my admit my most embarrassing is Leaf over Manning
I thought Leaf was stronger and looked like the proto-type QB in college. I thought Manning a guy with happy feet and couldn't win the big one in college. I thought he was kind of a wuss to be honest. Boy was that wrong. Besides that I am almost always right

Reggie Bush: I bought the hype hook line and sinker. I really thought for a while he could revolutionize the position. I used to drool regularly over his USC highlights. Man was I wrong...
Same could be said for Matt Leinart. I thought the guy was a total can't miss talent. I didn't think Vince Young or Jay Cutler would be good QBs, so I was right about one and wrong about the other. In fact, I was wrong about a lot of guys from that 06 draft... |

i was big into Leinart. however, i'm not entirely writing him off just yet. he's stuck in that Aaron Rodgers zone right now.

Maybe. I think the biggest problem with Leinart is that he is left-handed which reverse the entire offense. A coordinator would have to decide to tailor his offense around him, and I just don't think that is going to happen. We'll see though. I have certainly been wrong before.

Wanted Vince Young... I was tired of the Carr era.
Thought Santonio Holmes was overrated as a first round prospect.

Also thought Reggie Bush was gonna flip this league on its head.

I usually don't project too much, but some that I remember:
I really thought Andre Ware would do OK in the NFL. Oops. I really thought that DE that the Falcons drafted in the late '80s/early '90s was going to blow up. I can't remember his name, but I'm sure someone knows who I'm talking about. I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that JJ Arrington wouldn't make it in the pros, despite all the hype about the 2000 yard season. In fact, I mentioned it a few times when people kept hyping Reggie Bust to me. I knew he wouldn't live up to the hype, either. I knew Jay Cutler would be the best QB in the first round 2006. You didn't need to be much of an Oracle to figure that one out, but here in TX, you were a heretic for suggesting VY would bust. I was big on both D'Brickashaw Ferguson (despite the name) and Sam Baker, for their respective spots in the draft. Baker's done better to this point, I believe, but Ferguson's doing OK. Also in the "Too Obvious" category, I knew that anyone the Bengals drafted in the '90s would suck.

I was a Reggie Bush fan. Bah. I did say that AP would be better, but I thought RB was going to be a legit player.
I cant really think of anything terrible, but I am sure there is more. |
