The Defense in the 2nd Half

The D was playing lights-out in the first half, then.......

What happened?

New QB that we weren't expecting? Soft zone coverage? Bad execution?

I'd especially like to hear from the "X's and O's guys" and the "DVR guys" as to what they saw.

I'm glad we got the win, but the D was looking bipolar again.

They were kept on the field alot by an offense that decided to get conservative and start fumbling. Not saying they didn't have problems, but if our offense moved the ball like they did in the 1st half, than this discussion wouldn't be taking place.

They replaced Hill with a QB that could throw more than 10 yards down field. Not really a brain stretcher there.

when you have a QB come in after halftime and go 15 of 22 for 206 yards (13 of 15 before their last drive) (had a 11 yard run on one of those drives.
it is hard to keep a defense off the field, esp with no big defensive plays

If you practice all week for a certain style of offense and scheme for that style, then the team does a 180 and completely switches their offensive scheme, it tends to be difficult for the defense to adjust to. With that said, SF played well in the second half and really exploited our D, but they held just long enough to seal the win.

Also, not sure if anyone watched the pre-game shows on Fox or maybe it was ESPN, but there was a segment talking about how Houston and SF were #2 and #3 in the NFL against guarding TEs or something along that line, and it turned out that the TEs were the most utilized players in the game.

This is the correct answer. A lot of snake-bitten Texans fans are out
of control over a FREAKING WIN. The 49ers cheated and brought TWO
teams to the party. The Texans prepared all weak for the Shaun Hill
49ers, and shut them DOWN. They got less than 60 YARDS IN THE FIRST
HALF!!

Then, Mike Singletary puts in Alex Smith, who unlike Shaun Hill, throws tight
spirals and has the ability to kill you DEEP!!! The Texans were just not
ready for the switch of Alex Smith. He hasn't played in over 2 years, and
the 9'ers pulled a fast one on us with that spread offense with a strong-armed
mobile quarterback.

I think we also had no one who has a hope of matching up to that freak Vernon Davis.

They realised that and started finding him anytime they needed 6.

I was disappointed that we allowed Vernon Davis to score 3 times on very similar post patterns. A week after our secondary showed up against a very talented Bengals passing offense, they got shredded by a washed up 1st overall pick and what had thus far been a pedestrian 49ers passing game.

Credit the SF offense. Davis is a freak & they exploited our LB's in coverage.

The part in bold couldn't be more wrong. This monster is only 25 and is arguably the most freakish athlete in the entire NFL. He hasn't had a decent QB throwing to him throughout his career as well as having a hard time adjusting to the NFL game with attitude/work ethic problems. Mike Singletary has had a tremendously positive influence recently on him and I believe he's going to be one of the top TEs in the league this time next year, if not by the end of the season the way he's going right now.

Of course, there's still no excuse for him to run the same route three times and produce three touchdowns.

By first overall, I meant first overall in the draft, ie. Alex Smith. I thought the 'first overall' combined with the 'washed up' would be enough clues. Yea, Vernon Davis is a beast.

Dunno, I could have swore that I saw a change in the defensive scheme. The change in the offense we were playing might account for it.

Looked like we were playing man in the 1st half and zone in the 2nd half.

Having said that, I wasn't watching the DB's too closely and I don't DVR the games, so I don't know for sure.

Easiest way to describe what happened. Say you're playing Madden with someone online. You're killing them. Then, at halftime, they give the controller to someone else and you can't stop them. I think that's what was happening to the defense out there.

The total change in offense type and a QB that can move and throw, really threw the Defense off it's feed. Practice all week for one thing, and do a heck of a job stuffing it and then have a complete 180 in style in the second half (probably even made half time adjustments based on what they saw in the 1st half) really threw them.
