Came across some info that was interesting on this subject.
Schaub is holding on to the ball a long time and getting away with it. (so far) Small sample size but interesting.

Thanks for sharing as the guy should be commended for his effort. I would be interested to know a little more detail, such as, was the T "blanketed" by a TE, and was there a RB dedicated to blocking.

Question, what is the AVERAGE time that a QB should throw the ball ? What does the stopwatch say, 3.5 ?

I started noticing Schaub holding the ball way too long during the Raiders game this season. I knew it was a recurring theme in the past, but was hoping he'd fix it up this season. With the lack of a running game I think that Schaub feels he HAS to make more big plays rather than just go to the checkdown because that's the only way the offense will be able to move the ball.
Kurt Warner had problems holding the ball too long but now he's one of the best QBs against the blitz. This should be solved when/if we can get our running game going this season, when the defense starts getting more turnovers (more turnovers = more offensive opportunities) to go with their newfound ability to shut team's out in the 2nd half, and most importantly when Schaub gains more experience. I just hope he doesn't end up getting himself hurt before he learns not to hold the ball too long.

I would say less than that. I do not have any real references to quote, but my estimate would be about 3 seconds. It obviously takes a little longer if its a deep ball, but I think there are a lot more screens and short drops than deep balls thrown, so that would bring the average down a little bit. Of course, the strength of the O line needs to be taken into account too. Someone like Brady can afford to hold onto it a little longer than someone like Matt Stafford can.

Thanks TC this was wonderful insight.
I have to admit when I've been watching Brown isolated I can't get past how impressive he's been and then you see the stats and I would scratch my head as to what was causing the break down. This give a solid answer to that situation. I have to say though that Schaub doesn't seem to hold the ball too long on average but when he does I feel like he's learning to pull it down and get out of trouble. I think this is in a learning stage and I'm seeing him pulling it down at times when he doesn't need to but it's clear to me that this is just one more aspect of Schaub's game that is improving on an already very impressive performance. He's going to get better, and better and better. Thanks again TC.

This is something I've already mentioned last year.
A few of his sacks allowed was after the 3.5-sec mark; and anything after 3 secs, I'd say the blocker is not doing a bad job. Duane is doing better, but he still needs the go-round to face as many elite pass rushers as the schedule allows, and to get used to different blitzing schemes and stunts. Next year should be telling whether we have something special. Regardless, we should be settled at that position for a long time. Knock on wood! |
