Ricky Williams: "Wildcat is dead"

Williams had very interesting comments on the Wildcat:

"The Wildcat is dead," Williams said. "It's evolved. It's different now. It's called our regular offense basically. I don't think it should have a name. When people get in the I-formation it doesn't have a name. It's just the I-formation.

"There's all this talk about the Wildcat basically as a trick play. But we've done it so much. And there's so much on film. You can't call it that any more," Williams said.

Ricky's spot on here, folks. the formation isn't a gimmick anymore than a play-action pass is. it's just part of the Dolphins' offense and it's here to stay.

I dont know if defenses can fully stop it. The dolphins run it so much that they gash defenses for 4 or 5 yards a pop.

If a team uses it as its primary offense like the dolphins and not just as a gimmick it can work and work well.

I saw it in person. I don't understand how defenses can't stop it, it seems so simple. Miami's OC is pretty good.

it's simple, but you still have to deal with a great offensive line and two great runningbacks, in addition to the play-action going on.

the '95 Cornhuskers didn't do anything too crazy, either. still destroyed everyone.

They need to just rename it. I'll call it the veer-boneski. Kinda the veer, kinda the bone, but not really either. The Shamwow offense has a nice ring to it.

So, let's review.

The Wildcat is dead, because it's a huge part of the Dolphins offense.

The I-formation doesn't have a name... except that it's the I-formation.

Is Ricky hitting the bong again?

Also - the Dolphins are 2-3 just like the Texans. Who gives a rat's ass what it's called as long as it works and makes you a winner?

Which it hasn't, to this point.

IMO I think as the novelty of the wildcat wears off, it'll just be another formation.

After all, wildcat is pretty much the shotgun, except it comes with a run-oriented playbook that accompanies it.

yeah, the big difference between the run and shoot or the 46 or anything is those aren't just formations, those are entire playbooks. the wildcat is just a formation.

and it's not a gimmick. a gimmick is some surprise that the other team doesn't expect. EVERYONE knows the wildcat is coming. but, they've had a lot of trouble stopping it. why? because you have Jake Grove, Jake Long, Justin Smiley, Vernon Carey and Donald Thomas throwing you around, and Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams running the ball straight at you. there's very little "trick" to this "gimmick." the majority of the plays are just Ronnie Brown faking the handoff to Ricky Williams and running up the middle.

regardless, i'm not sure why people act so negatively to it. it's a very old school play, and fun as hell to watch.

I think the worst thing to happen for the rest of the Dolphins' opponents
was Pennington getting hurt. Chad Henne has a cannon arm, and
that Wildcat formation really wears a defense out over 4 quarters.
It's gonna be interesting to see how the next team the Dolphins lose
to beat them.
