Funny how last season they were just as bad as the Texans were on defense if not worse and with a few free agent pick ups and new coordinator, they end up turning this defense around a lot. I never understood why the Texans couldn't have gone after Dawkins. We could have used him for about one or two seasons while we drafted and developed a young stud at safety.
It's pretty frustrating watching a team like the Broncos turn their defense around as much as they have in one off season and then see ours get even worse than what they were last season after we used all of those draft picks on D and signed Antonio Weever to all of that money. Everyone knows that Frank Bush is gone next year, but at this point I think Rick Smith needs to go for sure. Get us a real GM that knows what he is doing. |

They've played Cincinatti, Cleveland, and Oakland. Not exactly tough offenses to play against with the exception of Cincy, who they beat on sheer chance with the Stokeley tipped pass touchdown.
Also, shouldn't this be in the NFL section since it doesn't really concern the Texans that Denver has, for now, a good defense, and we don't..? Edit: Would like to point out that all 3 of those teams are ranked in the bottom 8 in total offense so far this season, and I don't really expect Oakland or Cleveland to get a whole lot better.

But what really makes this surprising is they've done it in the midst of a
conversion year from the 4-3 to the 3-4 defense. Remember when Capers was here trying to staff a 3-4 defense ? He never really found the right people to rush the passer, yet the Boncos have apparently pulled a successful conversion in a few months ? |

A coach's or coordinator's fate is not decided on a few games. It takes at least an entire season to determine that. You don't know if the new scheme will finally click, and the last few defensive performances of the season look really good.
I've been happy with Rick Smith's draft choices so far, and the choice to hire Bush was Kubiak's. Though Smith's accountable for that, it still wasn't based on his initiative. Bush's resume' is highly qualified, so it's not like it was poor judgment. |

And as far as in free agency the guy's been a total failure. He hasn't brought in any good players in any of his off seasons to find some guys to fill in some holes and become upgrades where we're lacking. He's been a build through the draft guy this entire time and his plan hasn't worked. You've got to look for upgrades in the off season. |

I'll give you Cleveland. They got problems. Oakland barely lost to San Diego and could very well be 2-1 at this point. They just got beat by a good Denver team. |

The point is that defenses or offenses in some cases can turn around rather quickly. We haven't had any quick turn arounds since Kubiak or Smith got here and everyone's been wanting to wait so patiently like it's just going to happen. I'm sick to death of watching so many other teams turn certain things around while we just stay afloat or get worse in this case regarding our defense. At the end of the day Rick Smith has not been a good GM. |

YES! That's another good point as well. What the hell are we doing?? We're not even trying to resign the talent and productive players that we do have. I have no idea what this management team is thinking or what kind of leverage they think they have with guys like Demeco and Daniels. I don't see how any of these guys would want to stay on this team with the constant melt downs this team has, and the fact that they're both under paid and our GM won't even take care of them when they're a hand few of our only productive players that we have.

Perhaps Dawkins didn't want to come here. It kinda goes both ways like that.

I really don't think that is the case in the NFL. A lot of times free agents will go where they can start or feel that they'll have a great shot at starting on their new team if the money is still pretty good. I really don't see a ton of guys getting tons of more money than what they're worth on crappier teams unless it involves the Raiders or the Cowboys in some cases where Jerry Jones gets nutty. We've had a shot at a few players every season that might not have been game changers but were easily some improvements. We should have gone after Dawkins in this off season to bring some real toughness and leadership to this defense that's been lacking for years. We could have had the guy for like two years or something where some of our younger players could have learned a lot from the guy. He's helping out Denver a lot right now.

More and more excuses for a failure at GM. Where did you get that idea that he didn't want to come here when we didn't even persue him? That's the point. We've had an awful secondary since this organization has been established and nothing Casserly or Smith has done or tried has come close to working and both of those GM's have flat out ignored the fact that their is a position called Safety where you need some talent at. Had we gone after and tried to bring some talented safeties here at some point, then I wouldn't be so quick to criticize, but we haven't done jack to bring in a decent safety here in 8 fricken years!

Bottom line is that we need proven players on this defense that know what the hell they're doing and want to go out there and shut teams down. We have like 3 players like that on our defense right now, and that's about it. I'd take Dawkins over any one of our current safeties easily. |
