Thinking About Trading Down - Houston Texans Message Board & Forum

If the Texans were to trade down say 5 or 6 spots, do you think that we could could get an extra second round pick out of it? The more I think about it, trhe more it seems to make since. Here are some of my trade down projections.

1st Round: DT Shaun Cody-USC
Has the good size we need for a DE in a 3-4, at right around 300 pounds, but he still has good wells fro such a big man, running about a 4.75 in the 40, would supply a push on the edge that we need allowing our OLBs to get in the backfield quicker, also with his speed he would be a good addition in run support, stretching otuside runs to the sideline with his running ability.

2nd Round: OG Elton Brown-VT or David Bass-Michigan
Either of these gaurds would be a good addition to our O-line. They would push our current starters for a starting spot(if not earn one0 and provide great depth if anyon happened to go down durring the course of the season(ie. this season we were left with Fred Weary at OG). Also if we were to select Bass then we would have a combination OG, and OC and we would be able to play him at both.

Kevin Everett TE- From the U or Alex Smith TE-Stanford
Both of these guys are tall, have good speed, and are great receiveing TEs, they both would mke a major impact their rookie year, giving Carr good options over the middle of the field. OH, and both have great size.

3rd Round:
Cedric Houston RB- Tennessee
Good change of pase back with good hands and size, has the power to turn the ball up inside and make plays downhill, and even if he doesnt beat out Wells for the backup job, he will only make him work harder to keep it.

Lofa Tatupu LB/SS-USC
After seeing his performance in the National Championship Game, I think that it is fair to say that he is one of the most underrated players in this years draft. Playing against OU in the Fiesta Bowl his name was one of the ones that was consistently being called. The reason I think he will fall so low in the draft is because he is undersized, Only 6-0 and 225 Lofa is too small to play LB in the NFL level. I think that if he runs a good 40, somewhere in the 4.65 range that teams may consider moveing him to SS kinda like Boulware last year. If he can gain weight then he has the speed and tanasity to play at one of the MLB spots on the 3-4 and if he doesnt then I think he can contibute good depth at both LB and SS.

Thats all for right now but dont forget we also have 2 4th rounders so if everything goes to plan then we will have a 1st, 2 2nds, 2 3rds, and 2 4ths, cant beat that with a stick.

According to the link, Cody may not be a good fit for our 3-4, but we could find another tackle. But trading down, yea that's what I'm saying.
Weaknesses: Doesn't have the size you look for inside...Will be a liability against the run and can get pushed back by bigger, stronger offensive lineman...Doesn't really have a true position and is a 'tweener.

Trading down is fine and all, but its not easy. You have to have something another team wants. You cant just trade down for the hell of it. But it would be nice.

No, not straight up. The Texans would likely have to kick in one of their 3rd round picks. Last year, the 49ers went 12 picks down with the Eagles & picked up a late 2nd. The year before, the Chargers went from 15 to 30 with the Eagles & picked up a late 2nd. In the same draft, the Chiefs moved down 11 spots with the Steelers picked up a late 3rd & a 6th round pick. That is the market that's been set recently, so it's difficult to believe the Texans would get much more.

Like I said, it depends on if you have something they want. Detroit got a 2nd round pick straight up to move down one spot! So there is no formula for trading down.

That was at #6 & #7, premium picks. The #15 & #16 spots I used as examples are much closer to the Texans pick at #13. And Butch Davis won't be at this draft.

There is no "formula", but there is history. BuffSoldier asked for opinions, and I gave mine based on draft history.

Woah Lucky calm down. Im not attacking you. I am just stating that if you have something another team wants, you can get more. And I believe history backs me up on this.

I believe that this will be a very tough draft to trade down in. There are only a couple of top 10 guys and the amount of second tier guy is pretty large, so teams will not want to give up much to get a pick rated no better than what they can sit and wait for. The cost of trading up or down is always relative to the talent in the draft class. I do not think we will see much reward for trading down this year.

Why didn't the Texans Draft ben rothlesburger and then trade him? I was seriously asking that question on draft day.

I think Casserly commented on this on his radio show. A team did make a trade offer to move up & take Ben R. I think it was Buffalo and they offered a 3rd or 4th round pick to move up from #13 to the texans pick at #10. But the Texans thought the deal was too risky because they felt the Steeler or Jets would take Dunta before they picked. So I guess the answer to your question is that the Texans wanted Robinson more than the extra pick.

Even if we had to givem up one of our 3rd rounders for a 2nd, we would still end up with a good draft, just minus Tatupu. Who knows he might fall to the 4th.

Oh and if say David Thomas, Ronnie Brown, or someone of that caliber was still on the board do you think that we would be able to demand a 2nd rounder.

we... dont... need.... thomas... davis.

He sucks in coverage.. we play a zone coverage heavy defense.

on top of that we have had no troubles against the run in ANY of our 3 seasons.

Earl looked good and we have some depth behind him. if Davis is BPA..then fine.. but I doubt he will be. Using the #13 pick on a saftey is stupid IMO anyway. Saftey is like the OG of the defense.

oh and on trading down.. if we could grab a late second.. or even just another 3rd... we could possibly pick up someone like Shawne Merriman, Justin Miller (if his stock doesnt rise any more), Jones (if his stock falls, which i think it will), and a number of other quality players.

Really.. at #13.. the chances of us getting a true top tier player are slim.. there just arent enough of them in this draft. The difference between the talent at #13 and #20 probably wont be that much.

Wow, I mean, wow. Ive never heard anyone say that about TD before. I wouldn even say he was better than Sean Taylor from last year, but what do I know, Im no college football coach. I still think he was stretching the truth a little.

TD is one of my favorite players in the draft and I would love to draft him, I just dont think that is what the Texans will be using their top pick on, but if hes there at 13 and DJ is not on the board, I have no problem with the Texans taking him.

If the guys we are targeting are gone, I'd like to see us trade down and gain maybe a pick next year.

I admit this is the only bio I have read on the guy, but reading this, he almost seems perfect in a grooming roll.
