Cushing solid backer for Ryans

DeMeco Ryans got into it with teammate Brian Cushing in the locker room after the Texans' win over Tennessee.

Like veterans are wont to do, Ryans warned the rookie that nothing good could come from a tussle with him. He threatened to take the youngster outside to the parking lot to teach him a thing or three.

Cushing stood his ground - granted, his ground was a couple cubicles away - and even asked Ryans which type of fight he would prefer: a street fight or one with rules.

Ryans laughed.

"Whichever you choose," he said.

Were this not a victorious locker room, a gullible observer might think the two were about to come to blows.

No worries. Any blows these two deliver are more likely to be to opposing running backs than to each other.

For Ryans, just lining up next to another linebacker capable of delivering blows is so exciting he can't hide it. The best defensive player in Texans history almost gushes when he talks about a player who hopes to one day be in that discussion.

Rookie with impact

"He's a good player, a great athlete and a big guy that runs and hits. When he hits people, they feel it," Ryans said.

It is easy to forget that Cushing has played in only two games. The first-round draft pick from Southern Cal didn't even play in the preseason because of a knee injury.

Cushing brings more than just talent to this team. He brings attitude and spirit, which has been sorely lacking for many years. A little friction / friendly rivalry between teammates is not a bad thing. Jamie Sharper talked about having it with Ray Lewis when the Ravens won the Super Bowl.

It gets me fired up to see some fire in this team!!

I am loving what I am seeing from Demeco. Smith better get him signed if he doesn't want some pissed off Texans fans calling for his head. I love the attitude Demeco seems to be showing this season from his scuffle with Shockey in which he chunked him to the ground to his aggressive attitude he is exhibiting with Cushing. Keep the fire going Demeco!

Its all in jest, my guess is its stemming from Cushing leading in tackles.. Demeco has to set the record, he's still our best LB

I thought the picking Cushing was a solid first round choice. But the more I see the kid play and what I feel like he's impacted the attitude of the team. I'm loving the pick right now.

He's brought a fire to the defense that I haven't since Sharper was around. Not only does he bring the attitude he's not afraid to lay the wood. Scary thing is he missed the entire preseason and he leads the team in tackles.

I'd agree - I think he was a brilliant pick and I'm sure he'll become a major force on the D.

Locker-room passion is a good thing - if channelled.

And this is a good thing. I'd love for the Texans to get a rep for being a bad ass defense. Of course we'd need some safetys, CBs and a few more lineman for that, but who's counting? LOL

I gotta admit Cushing has been impressive, though I've still got reservations about using the 15th overall pick on a SAM backer ? More important/higher rated defensive postions would have been CB and DT, but maybe the most important consideration is not to bust with the top-pick (for references see 2007 NFL college Draft, e.g., Amobi Okoye), and at this point Cushing appears to be anything but a bust.
And I'll tell you something else about Cushing, he's versitile and could obviously play MLB if we ever decide we might want to move DeMeco over to his old college posiiton at WIL. I dunno, Cushing himself might be able to play the WIL because he's unusually quick with excellent foot speed for a 260 pounder. He's a big boy who moves very well in spite of his size.

I will admit that I really did not want the Texans to take Cushing, I was concerned about how he missed games in college because of injury every year, and how there was so much talk about steroids. Now that Cushing is here, and I have learned more about him, and seen him play, I could not be happier with the pick. He seems to be an excellent character guy, dedicated to football, and knows how to bring it every play.

Why would we want to decide to move him somewhere else. They both are working perfectly fine where they are now. I guess it's kinda like... Don't fix it if it ain't broke. I think that all three... Diles, Cushing, and Ryans... could play all three positions successfully if they had to. It looks like we may not have to worry about that position while we plug in more pressing needs such as our backfield and both lines.

Despite all the glaring mistakes I've seen from two games. I'm really liking Brian Cushing right now. I just see 'HOF' written all over him. The 'Peyton Manning' of LBs, if you will. That guy is all business in the NFL. He has the commitment necessary to succeed. He appears to really understand the game of football hence the 'Manning' reference. Let's hope he remains injury-free.

WOW! You know this is getting out of hand. I have to say something. We had a bitter defeat that crushed us in week one and then we come back and steal a victory away from our most hated rivals. So we went from a really low to a really high. Apparently some of us are still high.

HOF??? Peyton Manning of LB's????? Are you kidding me????? Cushing had a good game. Considering he missed most of preseason and this was only his second game. I would not label him HOF material just yet. People need to come down to reality. He made more than one mistake (that is to be expected). He looks the part but its way to early to judge him good or bad.

THe biggest issue most of us had about him coming out was his injury history. 7 weeks into is career he has already missed 3 weeks of work because of injury. Im not trying to be Debbie Downer but some of you need to take a step back and take a look at things without letting the Tacs win influence you so much.

This team, Kubiack and Cushing still have alot to prove. I am as proud of them as any of you but lets see what they do over the next few games before we declare them ready for the big time. I feel sorry for some of you. I for one am not going to set myself up for another letdown like in week one. Not until I see some consistancy anyway.

I didn't label him anything. I see the potential in him. That was an implied post more than anything else. Not a factual statement.

I'm just excited about him and I'm going to say that. I really like what I've seen out of him. He leads the team in tackles as well as tackles for a loss (I think). Sure, he's whiffed some. As I stated in my initial post, glaring mistakes...

Let me clarify the Manning-esque reference. I attributed it to his keen sense of awareness. Manning is known for that. I saw Cushing showing that keen sense of awareness in his first two games. This kid knows football. He has a lot to learn. He's going to make rookie mistakes and he's going to continue to make them throughout the year. He's also shown the ability to be a playmaker.

Just excited about Brian Cushing is all. Take a chill pill and take your 'feeling sorry for us excited people' and stick it where the sun don't shine. Being a football fan is all about looking at positives as well as negatives. Not everything on the Houston Texans is bad. There's a bright spot right now and that's Brian Cushing. I'm going to enjoy that bright spot for as long as it shines. May end next week but who gives a monkey's butt.

Need vs BPA ? Different issue entirely than what I'm talking about, which is the value which teams place on particular positions and the Draft pick they are willing to part with, subject to the abilities of the individual of course.
For example QB is the most valuable position of course followed by LT, CB,
& DLine (not necessarily in that order, but after QB they are the most important positions) while at the bottom of the hiearchy would be such position as guard, safety, and 4-3 SAM.

Grand total of 2 games in the league and you've already got him joining 10-year vet Peyton Manning at Canton ?
