Default Texans show tough side, work to shed finnese label

Texans vow they will retaliate when challenged

The Texans didn't just level their record at the expense of the startled Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

According to two of their most veteran and long-frustrated players, receiver Andre Johnson and cornerback Dunta Robinson, they experienced a spontaneous personality makeover.

“Guys just don't want to sit around and be quiet anymore,” Johnson said. “We were determined, no matter what, that we were going to go out and win. Normally we probably would have lost that game. (Our attitude) is totally different. It's something that's never happened around here before.”

Jets linebacker Bart Scott might have branded the Texans “a finesse team” — a label with which no NFL team wants to be saddled — but going forward, if teams think they can push the Texans around, Robinson promised, they're going to be in for the rudest of awakenings.

“If you're a dirty team,” he said, “then expect to get it back. In previous games in our division, we've just been bullied and we've never retaliated. But once you see guys out there not taking it anymore, seeing somebody like Andre do what he did and not back down, that fires you up.”

The Titans had intimidated the Texans on repeated occasions in past seasons and tried to do so again, but they failed miserably this time around while losing the game to boot 34-31.

The sideline brawl early in the fourth quarter, which erupted after the usually serene Johnson and Titans corner Cortland Finnegan tangled near the Texans' bench, was the defining moment, the culmination of a major attitude adjustment that took place over the course of a wild afternoon in Nashville.

“It brought something out in me that people don't normally see, like the fight situation,” said Johnson, who has been fined $7,500 by the NFL for his role in the melee. “We're all grown men. Some things are not going to be tolerated and some bad things happened in the game Sunday.”

Wwwwwwwwwoooooooooooo!!!! Now that makes me pumped reading that. Let's hope the guys keep it up. I want to see some fire and some passion. Maybe they will give up some big plays but as long as they are fighting and dishing out the blows, I can take it.

As much as I can't stand Dunta right now, I love this quote:

Kick some ass guys.

This is what we've been waiting for from this team. And I don't believe these are empty words. I said this in a preseason prediction thread regarding the Texans:

The Jets game forced these players to look in the mirror to find the reasons they weren't winners. I believe they have the winning attitude. Now. Tony Dungy mentioned this offseason that the Texans were a "confidence piece away" from becoming an elite team. Below is my interpretation of Dungy's comment:

The Texans are not a perfect team. The defensive coaching is dubious, at best. The safety positions have haunted this team from its inception. And I still see the Texans suffering from Gary Kubiak's gameday indecisiveness. But, there are no perfect teams in the NFL. Confidence and attitude can go a long way in covering up imperfections. Especially when those traits are emanated from elite players. Like Andre Johnson.

I got the impression the Titans were their own worst enemy last Sunday. It looked like the Texans had enough & finally pushed back. I'm just wondering if they will play with fire right at the start of the game
