Wow...the older day's ones were extremely violent. You gotta feel for the quarterback being thrown down by his helmet.

Easy. First it makes a loud snapping sound and then it folds in two. I remember watching that game. I was nauseated at the sight.

There are some classics in there.

Earl on Robertson, Earl and Tatum at the goal line.

Steve Atwater's hit on Okoye. Atwater was wired for sound that game - if you ever get a chance to hear the live version it's classic. Okoye's career seemed to take a nose dive after that day.

Tatum's hit on Sammy White in the SB

Don Beebe getting bounced on his head and not getting hurt.

Even Ernest Givens gets in on the action.

Just seeing Ronnie Lott and Jack Lambert brings back memories.

There's some oldies but goodies in there. Butkus, Karras, etc. The Karl Kassulke hit on Greg Landry was on highlight films for years back in the early 70's.

Yes, it was a game played by a different set of rules back then. If they allowed the clotheslines and yanking down by the helmet today, we wouldn't have any players left by midseason.

You also see a lot of "leading with the helmet" in some of the footage. That's one of the modern rules that's a bit subjective and tough to call in real time and it often ends up resulting in some ticky-tack calls.

That was one of the worst wrecks that I have ever witnessed. I remember it vividly.
I used to really enjoy "Mr." Butkis. That man knew how to put a hit on someone. And you could hear the growl when he nailed them.

A very long time ago when I was just a wee child I will never forget a player collapsing on the field and dying. I believe he was a Detroit Lion and I think he died on the field. I don't remember his name but I think he was a receiver and it was YEARS ago...many years ago. I don't think I dreamed it but for some reason this topic made me think of that.

As far as injuries go though I don't see how it could get any worse than what happened to Joe T. It was sickening and I've read where the leg he broke is a inch or two shorter than the other. That injury was a lifelong one. He'll never be the same.

You're thinking of Chuck Hughes (1971), the Lions WR who collapsed and died of a heart attack on the field after running a pass route. It was later determined that he had heart disease so it wasn't due to a blow to the head or anything like that. He's the reason you will never see a Lions player wear #85 since they retired the number in his honor.

I just had this vague recollection of seeing that on TV and how weird and surreal it was.

Hopefully we'll never have to see something like that again.

There was also a Lions player that was paralyized during the Barry Sanders days.

That one was telivized on national tv as well. I believe that was around 97'ish.

Worst part about that one was that it was in the game that Barry got his 2000th yard for the season, making it stick out even more.

Mike Utley (the Thumbs Up Guy) was injured in '91. Barry got his 2000 in '97.

It was that guy who was named Robert Porsche or something like that who got cracked in '97.

OK, but if it was Robert Porcher he didn't get hurt too badly since he played in all 16 games in '97. Utley was paralyzed for life.

Well Porcher did get the aforementioned injury in the last game of that season, so I wouldn't say it wasn't too badly. Not paralyzed for life I don't think, but it ended his career for obvious reasons.

I just remember I THINK he sort of recovered.... I remember footage of him walking around with that spinal contraption.

The Lion who was hurt in 97 was a LB named Reggie Brown in the last game on the season against the Jets. He was from Texas A&M.

That's it.......how could I have forgotten .....and yes, that was a very scary one.

Haven't heard much about Reggie lately.

Porcher played through '03...rarely missed a game ... that's why I knew it couldn't be him.

I am not sure if this the hit, but does anyone remember Jim McMahon getting slammed on his should by a Green bay packer. I have disliked the Packers ever since.
