Ventrone is known mostly for his special teams skills, but the Texans need depth at safety.

Not sure, if we are looking for a safety here is the updated best list from Scout.com updated 9/11

Bernard Pollard - High-end backup, low-end starting SS at this point in his career.
Brian Russell - Probably not a starter any more at FS.
Marlon McCree - Solid backup option.
Dexter Jackson - Lots of injury issues in recent years.
Corey Chavous - It's questionable if he'll find a starting job.
Dwight Smith - Probably not a starter at this point in his career.
Sammy Knight - May decide to retire.
Keith Davis - Recently released by the Raiders. Davis is a solid special teams player and fits in as a fourth safety.
Will Demps - Solid backup.
Matt Giordano - Good special teams player and decent backup.
Todd Johnson - Decent backup option.
Keith Lewis - Solid special teamer.
Kevin Kaesviharn - Decent backup option.
Aaron Francisco - Good special teams player and decent backup.
Herana-Daze Jones - Good special teams player and decent backup.
Stuart Schweigert - Average backup.
Vernon Fox - Average backup.
Mike Green - Smart player who fits in as a fourth safety.
Terrence Holt - Probably will not get starting consideration.
Tank Williams - Basically a fourth safety.
Mike Doss - He was recently selected in the UFL draft.
Cameron Worrell - Fourth safety.
Michael Boulware - The conversion from linebacker in college never worked out.
Jerome Carter - Limited starting experience. Fits in as a fourth safety.
J.R. Reed (KR) - Fourth safety.

I would say, "Because that is the right way to do things", but that would be gratuitous and mean-spirited at this time.

McCree's probably better than what we have now. Although, once Wilson comes back we'll need a SS more than a FS.

You wouldn't expect the Texans to fill this void with a quality player taken high in the draft that would solidify the position for years to come, would you? If they fixed this glaring hole in the team what would we have to complain about?

Texans need depth? How about a freaking legit starter?

There's some decent options(considering who they will replace anyway) out there but once again the Texans miss out in the off-season the chance to go out and help the backend of the defense. The FO seems to think the act of hoping to cobble together a starting duo during the off-season then they can try and snatch up someone after the start of the season to finish it off. IT should be obvious to them it's just not working. At all.

I think Corey Chavous would be an upgrade to the S spot, but of course the Texans go after a relatively unknown in Ray Ventrone.
