Default "overnight" success???

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...l.1d6be03.html

Quote:
A slew of high draft picks has enabled the Texans to build a depth chart in 2009 that could allow them to follow in the footsteps of the Rams and Ravens as "overnight" contenders.

The Texans have six first-round draft picks who pencil in as 2009 starters: wide receiver Andre Johnson (2003), cornerback Dunta Robinson (2004), defensive tackle Amobi Okoye (2007), defensive end Mario Williams (2006), offensive tackle Duane Brown (2008) and now linebacker Brian Cushing (2009).

"These last few years we've been very fortunate not only with our top picks, but all of our picks," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "Look at a guy like [OT] Eric Winston, who's been a starter from the middle of Year 1. [TE] Owen Daniels from Day 1, [MLB] Demeco Ryans, Steve Slaton, Duane Brown ...

"If we didn't draft well the last few years, I'd be scared to think of where we'd be. Our plan all along was to draft them and put them to work very quickly."

There are six key positions in a salary-cap world: quarterback, running back, wide receiver, left offensive tackle, pass rusher and cover corner. Fill those spots and you become a contender.

Those spots have been filled in Houston with Matt Schaub at quarterback, Steve Slaton at running back, Andre Johnson at wideout, Brown at left tackle, Williams as the pass rusher and Robinson the cover corner.

Johnson and Williams are Pro Bowlers, as is Daniels. Ryans was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2006, and Slaton the NFL's leading rookie rusher in 2008 with 1,282 yards. Schaub posted his first 3,000-yard passing season in 2008, and the Texans designated Robinson as their franchise player in 2009.

Houston has the glow of a contender.

Praise from a Dallas paper, is that a 1st?

Anyway, I don't really mind it, but I would still rather "fly under the radar." All this good news is making me nervous until I see it on the field and in the record.

On a side note, the writer left Ryans out as a Pro-Bowler.

Oh well, what did we expect from the "outside press."

Default Positive Texans Article from Cowgirl Land

Our status still remains unkown, but the potential turn around is gaining recognition........even in a far away land. Our successful first rounders presently starters are noted.

Honestly, that is because people in Dallas aren't obssessed with hating Houston sports. True. Plus the DMN has some great writers and they are objective on the local team and others out there.

There is no lemonade in football. It is time to turn goat piss into gasoline.

The DMN is easily the best paper in the state, but that may be faint praise ?
On the other hand, nationally it's certainly not even in the conversation with the likes of the NY Times, Wasington Post, and LA Times.
But we are fortunate to still have newspapers in our major cities in Texas because they're dropping like flies elsewhere.
BTW, I dunno much about the Austin paper, rarely read it ? So maybe I should qualify my own opinion on the states best newspaper ?

No, you are right. The Austin American Statesman is barely a paper. The Sports page is maybe 4 pages long and it is box scores with some outsourced articles and Longhorn news. The DMN is definitely the best in the state and those guys are harder on their own teams than anyone. I just like many of the writers and they seem to cover a large amount of stories.
