Default NFL Preseason Preview - Minnesota (2-0) At Houston (1-1)

Quote:
By Tony Moss, NFL Editor -- (Sports Network) - Brett Favre will get an extended chance to run the Minnesota Vikings offense for the first time on Monday night, when the highly- decorated quarterback and his team travel to meet the Houston Texans in the third preseason outing for both teams.

Favre made only a cameo appearance in the team's Aug. 21st win over the Kansas City Chiefs, completing just 1-of-4 passes for four yards in the eventual 17-13 victory. Favre had been with the Vikings for only three practices when he took the field in that contest, and will be expected to show a greater level of comfort and sharpness when the takes the field against the Texans.

The player that could follow Favre in the lineup is Sage Rosenfels, who is competing with Tarvaris Jackson for the primary backup job and will return to his former home. Rosenfels served mainly as a backup during his three years with the Texans (2006-08), but did go 6-4 in 10 starts over his final two seasons in Houston. Rosenfels, who missed last week's contest due to an ankle problem, was traded to the Vikings in exchange for a fourth-round draft choice on Feb. 27th.

If Rosenfels can't go, the quarterback who follows Favre in the lineup will again be Jackson, who played well against the Chiefs.

The former second-round draft pick completed 12-of-15 passes for 202 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the victory, and his play has helped fan the flames of controversy in and around the Vikings' Winter Park complex. Media reports earlier this week have suggested that a selection of Minnesota players feel Jackson gives them a better chance to win than Favre or any of the other quarterbacks on the roster.

What are they giving us for the season? I have a feeling that this game will foreshadow our season, good or bad. I don't know why. Just a gut feeling.

It ranges from 7 and 8 to 10 and 6. BUT, all state that if the D does not come to play any stronger than years past, the Texans could very easily end up below .500. They must be reading this MB.

Exactly what I have been thinking! To come out flat in this game would be a real bad sign. I know its preseason but Monday night, Brett Farve, bad blood between us and them. There probably isnt another game they will play this year that will garner this kind of national attention.

If our players cant get up for this game IMO it will be saying alot about our teams overall character. Im not talking about the outcome either. Im just saying if they arent playing their asses of off then were in trouble. If they are then were headed in the right direction. The attitude of this team will be revealed in this game.

You know what bothers me every year. After questionable or poor preseason show, which encapsulates virtually every year, the repeated vocalization on all levels that preseason performance and record is of minimal predictive importance. We always hear how the Texans are just evaluating talent and, besides.............if they win, it would just generate false confidence going into the regular season. It is better to lose in the preseason and win in the regular season.

Wouldn't it be nice to show some consistent, real improvement and promise in preseason........and have to deal with the "false confidence" it might generate?

The Texans are 1-6 all-time in these "as close to a regular season game as you can get in the pre-season" games.

That's nice and all, but pre-season is just not the same game. We went 3-1 in the PS in '06. There's some false confidence.

Does the run D concern me this pre-season? Yes, but not because of their performance this PS. It's because they've historically been a bad run D team.

You evaluate PLAYERS in PS you don't evaluate SCHEMES. I'll wait until the regular season to evaluate schemes and such when real game plans are layed in. When they hold Thomas Jones and Leon Washington in check....or not, then we'll see if it's the same o same o. You'll have Cushing in there then and most likely Dunta too, you won't have Okam starting like last week, and you'll have a game plan layed in. We'll see what the deal is for real then.

Well, yeah. It's almost* always better to win than it is to lose. But, like you said, there's no real correllation between pre-season and regular season records. Most coaches aren't approaching these games in an attempt to do everything they can to win them; they're using them to work on specific things and to evaluate and prepare certain people.

I'd prefer that we lose all the preseason games if it means that our guys really are getting prepared to play the regular season. Several people have brought up the "you play like you practice" statement. I don't know where that comes from (I think it's the military) but that's exactly the opposite of what I've always heard. In music and theater, the general rule is that if you have a rehearsal with alot of problems, you generally have a good performance and vice versa. It's better to find and work out all the kinks before the real lights come on.

But, yeah, I'd love to see general improvement in the preseason but even if I did, it could just be an illusion.

* I can think of two times when it's not better to win:

1. If winning costs you players through injury.
2. If you are so concerned with winning in the pre-season that you don't work on your problem areas so you aren't ready when it's for real.

HOUSTON - Brett Favre had just three days to prepare for his first start this preseason. This one should be a better indicator of how the comeback from his second retirement is going.

Favre is expected to play the entire first half when the Minnesota Vikings face the Houston Texans in an exhibition game on Monday night.
Quote:
Houston coach Gary Kubiak said several starting jobs are up for grabs, but he's more interested in seeing how his team bounces back after what happened against New Orleans.

"I think it's response more than anything for our football team, because we were really having a great camp, progressing along, feeling pretty good about what we were doing and then — boom. You get a dose of reality," he said. "I want to see us respond to that."
Quote:
Allen missed Minnesota's last preseason game because of a sprained ankle, but is scheduled to play this week.

Both players insist there's no bad blood between them from what happened last year.

"It's in the past," Schaub said. "I'm moving on. It's a new year."

Allen agreed.

"I was cool with him already. Hopefully they don't try nothing cheap down there," he added with a laugh.

Houston's offensive linemen aren't as quick to let the incident go. Left tackle Duane Brown said seeing the hit on tape makes him "sick to his stomach" because he believes he could have prevented it.

"From the beginning of the game, he had a little bit to say about me, with me being a rookie out there," Brown said of Allen. "You pair that up with the fact he put a lick on my quarterback that put him out of the game, of course, I feel I need some revenge."

I'd just like to see the D controlling momentum for once. Regular or Preseason. I expect a few sacks and at least 1 pick from Sage. Hell he should be used to throwing them here...

Regarding the front 7, since we are playing the starters for 3 quarters, and based upon previous preseasons and the regular seasons that followed them, I think I can make a pretty good judgment after Monday night as to whether the team has gotten better or not.

And this thinking that there is no correlation to players vs. schemes is bogus in my opinion. That reeks of giving the players a pass during the regular season, and laying it all on the coaches. ( I gotta get all my knives sharpened )

If they never, ever get pressure on the QB with the 4 down lineman, that nullifies any blitzing scheme, no matter what it is. If the only way to pressure the QB is to "manufacture" one with a blitz, any offensive coordinator worth his salt will take advantage of that during the regular season. On some plays, you need to just rush with the front four. If they can finally do it by themselves, (and prove to the opposing OC that they can) that allows the linebackers to be used in a soft zone. That should be enough to get the QB to hesitate in time for the linemen to get to him. In the entire history of the club, they never have been able to do that. NEVER.

And until they do, it won't matter what the "scheme" is.

We went 3-1 in the preseason, the year we went 6-10 and we finished up 3-3 in our division that year.

I don't want to go 3-1 in the preseason and then go 6-10.

I don't mind going 0-4 in the preseason if we get into the playoffs.

The preseason means nothing. If you win in the preseason, it can give us (the fans) a very illusory belief that we've seen improvement when we really haven't.

I want to see improvement, too. I just want to see it in the regular season and the pre-season be damned.

one trend I would like to see is they said on TV that Payton has been sacked 5 or 6 times in three games after being sacked 14 times last year.

Im just saying if they arent playing their asses of off then were in trouble. If they are then were headed in the right direction. The attitude of this team will be revealed in this game.
Well at least Solomon agrees with me. Dont know whether that is a good thing or not.

Though this one is only almost kinda, sorta for real, it is really important.

If you're wondering what the 2009 Houston Texans will be made of, tonight's game against the Minnesota Vikings should be a window into the team's soul.

Expect the Texans to come out with a sense of urgency that was lacking a week ago, when they looked like fleur de lis against the Saints.

If there is anything coaches love almost as much as winning, it is grounds to get into their players. They will make them up if they have to. Coach Gary Kubiak and staff didn't have to be very creative this week.

“We were really having a great camp, progressing along, feeling pretty good about what we were doing and then boom, you get a dose of reality,” Kubiak said. “I want to see us respond to that.

“I think we've had a good camp. It's time for all the starters to stand up and say, ‘I'm ready to go.' That's what this week is about, and the good thing for us is this is a great football team we're playing. So, there'll be nothing false about where we're at. I'm looking forward to the challenge and I want to see our guys respond.”

The Texans are going to be a pretty good football team. They should be playoff-contending team.

But let's not kid ourselves. Those sorry scoundrels you saw against New Orleans are likely to show up again at some point this season. It is a good bet, though, that the team you see tonight will show up more often. That is why this one is so important.

Kubiak stressed the importance of his players bouncing back from last week's embarrassment, but the coaching staff has to rebound from the shame as well.
