This isn't the first time this off-season that I have seen Sapp be complementary to the Texans but here are a few comments from a chat he had today on NFL.com:
Mookie, Detroit Who do you think is the best Hurricane in the NFL besides Ed Reed? Warren Sapp, NFL Network Ummmmm .................................................. Andre Johnson. Greg Kraemer, Guelph, Ontario Canada Sapp, Give me one defensive player you'd build your team around today? Warren Sapp, NFL Network Mario Williams. He's that. It's very rare to come across an airport guy that can actually play on the field. Most All-Airport guys can't play. (Not sure what All-Airport guy is) Steve G., Harlingen, TX Who's your darkhorse team this year? Warren Sapp, NFL Network Houston! For the rest of the chat: http://chat.nfl.com/front/archived_chat/394

By "airport guy" I think he means tall guys, players over 6'5"-6'6" who can play. I've heard Sapp talk over and over about how the little guy wins in the NFL and leverage is everything.

You know, its been mentioned on here before, but I think Sapp has the qualities needed to coach. Maybe not HC, but I could see him as Dline coach.
Back to the topic, it is great to start getting recognition. He is not the first I have seen to pick us as a sleeper team. |

Slightly different take on "All-Airport guy" from mk5: an All-airport guy is someone who looks like a stud in street clothes but whose play seldom measures up. Being tall helps to be all-airport, but it is not essential. Sapp's derision of them is based on his observation (shared by many others) that the most-impressive-looking athlete on a team is seldom its best player. A close cousin of the "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" putdown.
In Sapp's case, I think there is a little personal history behind it. Sapp always looked slightly doughy, but his incredible feet and agility, combined with his bulk, made him one of the greats. But his athleticism wasn't evident until you watched him play. In street clothes, he looked like just another over-stuffed lineman. Mario, on the other hand, oozes athleticism in any setting. No doubt, it's great to be getting the love. |

Wasn't that the guy that stayed in his little apartment in NY poring over college practice tapes and other mundane stuff that most analysts don't want to look at? And all kinds of NFL GM's asked his opinion on players?

Bill Belichick once offered him a job as a scout but he stayed at Pro Football Weekly. Unfortunately, once he died the magazine became Pro Football Weakly.

He was the one that the Encyclopedias referred to for sport related information. He had a photographic memory and a videographic brain. RIP to a unique individual the likes of which the sports world will never again be fortunate enough to see.
