Default Cushing spends some of his contract $ on... a hyperbaric chamber

Apparently he's not the only one on the team who owns one...

From Nick Scurfield's blog.

Hey - if the guy thinks it gives him an edge, I applaud this purchase. He hasn't even gotten a house or apartment yet - and the guy's gone out and bought something he thinks will help him with healing faster, improving blood flow, etc.

Cushing said that Texans linebacker Kevin Bentley, who also has a hyperbaric chamber, helped him to get one. Texans receiver Kevin Walter also has a hyperbaric chamber. Cushing uses the chamber every day for about an hour in his room at the team hotel near Reliant Stadium.
Add Kevin Bentley to that list.

Another interesting bit from that piece:
Quote:
After Friday’s practice, Marciano was discussing how far the Texans have come in terms of depth since 2002, when most of his special teams player were street free agents that no other club wanted, when he compared Casey and Barwin to Jim Thorpe – one of the greatest, most versatile athletes in history.

“They can do everything," he said.

They did do just about everything in college. Barwin was a defensive end, tight end and walk-on basketball player at Cincinnati. Casey was a tight end, running back, quarterback and punt returner at Rice – and that was after he played minor league baseball for three years. He is being groomed to be the Texans’ long snapper.

“Casey was a quarterback, so that helps,” Marciano said. “He can throw. You show him the motion. I did it. I snapped a perfect spiral back to him. So he did it, and did the perfect spiral. So if he can do that, he can put two hands on the ball and do it. If you watch on Monday, he'll be snapping for us."
I knew he was a consideration for LS but I hadn't heard anything from the staff on it.

Check out this PDF. http://www.genoxinc.com/Chamber%20Br...%20Booklet.pdf

There are portable ones that start at $10,500

non portable USED start at $49,000

non portable NEW: they don't list a price but I imagine it is the equivalent of the GDP of a small country!

Much obliged!

I would have guessed that it cost a lot more than that. I was thinking it'd be closer to 6 digits. I guess I was way off.

No surprise that Cush would get one. He is very interested in keeping the bod in tip top shape.

I remember a segment on ESPN a few years ago about how Anthony Gonzales (back then with Ohio State, now with Indianapolis) would always get light headed and nauseated during practice, but the problem went away permanently after he started sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber every night. It hangs like a plastic tent over his bed, and he takes it on the road. Maybe that started a trend.

As long as he doesn't have pet monkeys and little boys running around his house, I am cool with that. I think they recently had a clearance special on one at Neverland.

I really appreciate an athlete doing anything to keep his body in tip-top shape but my reaction would have been exactly like Cushing's roommate Connor Barwin.

From the article:

“The first time he brought back to the hotel, I was dying laughing,” Barwin said. “It’s just really funny to see. Half of our hotel room is this bubble or tube or something, and there is this little clear thing. I come in the room and Cushing is lying in this hyperbaric chamber and I just knock on the window and smile at him. But obviously, it’s just another sign to how committed he is to staying healthy and doing the right things, but it’s really funny every time I walk into the hotel room.”

I would have laughed my ass off.

I question the actual effect of this stuff. Professional cyclists did this for years, now no one is doing it anymore. I have a feeling it's all placebo

Eh, its his $ and if he wants to spend it on something like this, that is his choice. I do like that his first big purchase was something to help his body recover. Its much better than spending $ on something that will just go up your nose anyway.
