Default Antonio Smith Never Expected Top Pay Day

Did you know?....................

Quote:
Ex-Poke Antonio Smith raking it in with Houston Texans Defensive end is one of NFL's highest-paid players

Former Oklahoma State defensive end Antonio Smith will earn more this season than all but six NFL players.

Former OSU star Antonio Smith signed a five-year $35 million contract with the Houston Texans in the offseason and also received a $12.5 million signing bonus. (Photo Courtesy of the Houston Texans)

Listed No. 45 on Sports Illustrated’s 2009 list of top 50 American athlete money earners, the Oklahoma City native signed a five-year, $35 million deal with the Houston Texans, highlighted by a $12.5 million signing bonus.

"It’s surreal,” Smith said. "Growing up around poverty, to have the money to have everything that you could ever want is crazy. To help out all the people you’ve come to love is such a blessing.”

As training camps open across the country this weekend, Smith, 27, has cashed in on the Arizona Cardinals’ Super Bowl run.

Bolstered by the huge up-front signing bonus, Smith will earn $15.5 million, more than stars like Ben Roethlisberger, Adrian Peterson, Terrell Owens, Tony Romo, LaDainian Tomlinson and Kurt Warner.

"Never in my life would I have dreamed that I would make as much money as those type players,” Smith said. "I can’t even dream it now as much money as some of those guys make.”

To fully appreciate Smith’s multi-million dollar deal consider :

→He didn’t start playing football until he was a freshman at John Marshall.

→Smith was cut his first two seasons with Arizona, landing on the practice squad in 2004 and 2005 before finally given an opportunity.

→He has never made the Pro Bowl.

Early in his NFL career, it appeared Smith might not make a roster to earn the league minimum $230,000, much less $35 million
.

FOR THE REST OF THE STORY

Isn't that signing bonus pro-rated over the life of the contract?

Either way, that was his market value. If he is an improvement over Weaver then we are in good shape.

Well, when you are as bad in a position as the Texans were at LDE, you have to resort to desperate measures to fix the problem.

I'm not really worried about Smith. Unfortunately, the guy before him was literally one of the worst in the league, if not THE worst - so I'm fine with the signing.

When dealing in free agency, you have to overpay if you want someone who's going to make a difference. That's just how it is in the NFL.

Porky,

I believe the signing bonus is all paid out in the first year but gets factored into the cap as prorated over the course of the contract

Antonio Smith contract will look more favorable when compared to Tyson Jackson (3rd overall pick of Chiefs- LDE) in coming weeks. Tyson has yet to adjust to NFL work loads while Smith is coming into his prime playing days having earned it by producing @ the highest level

I still don't know why they took the 20th best prospect in the draft 3rd.

That story is a perfect example of how the news and sports media have become entirely unconcerned with accuracy. While technically it may be true, comparing his earnings this season favorably over Ben Rothlisburger, APeterson, and Tony Romo is disingenuous to say the least. Those guys have contacts averaging $10+ Million per year which included massive signing bonuses. But, since they received their bonus in a previous year, I guess this joker can get away with the comparison.

Absolutely. Another recent example is that ridiculous story about how Matt Schaub is going to be the highest paid player in the NFL in 2009.

I have no problem with the point of this article, which is a rags to riches story. I wouldn't even be bothered by an article asserting the Texans overpaid for ASmith or Schaub. It's just very frustrating how journalism has deteriorated the past 20 years. Now, it seems to be understood and widely accepted that information is there simply as a tool to be used and manipulated by the author. Seems to me, at minimum, the duty of a journalist (including columnists) would be to construct an argument or a story within the confines set by the facts... instead of manipulating the facts to make their story or argument: SEE Richard Justice!!

sorry for the rant.

While I'm happy with having Smith here I hope his contract isn't too much money for him. I think he has all the tools to be a good player and help Mario. He had one good season last season and a great playoff run with the Cards but before that he was cut. Hopefully he is over that now and him and Barwin along with Amobi and the rest of the pack will rise up and make this D among the top 15 in the NFL.

Something to keep in mind here, the Texans won a bidding war for this guy. Meaning other teams were throwing big money at him too (Giants, Bucs).

What I like most about AS is his ability to play all 4 D-line spots and he wreaks havoc from any of those spots. Darnell Dockett was freed up so much because of AS, and DD gets all the credit (and the sacks). Watch the 2nd half of the NFC Championship game vs. the Eagles. AS penetrates the middle of the line and gets a hand in Donovan's face atleast once every series of downs, its really special to watch. He may come in here and only get 4.5 sacks a season or so but it'll boost Mario and Amobi's production big time.

Something else to keep in mind, its very possible with an emergence of Conner Barwin that AS will be playing DT a good deal of snaps, which can reduce sacks#'s.

James Harrisson was cut 3 or 4 times early in his career. I'm not sure what any of that has to do with the player that he is now. He was a productive player each of his last 3 seasons but did become more of a playmaker the past 1 1/2 seasons.

I'm just hoping last season was not a one time deal which I am sure it was not. I'm just as excited as the others on this board about AS coming here and a mayjor factor on D. The Cards D was also better than Houston's last season and he is now playing on a lower ranked D in large part due to RS which will hopefully cause the Texans D have a mayjor trun around.

I'm OK with Smith. He hasn't said or done anything to suggest he might rest on his laurels since he got a big payday. Nothing in his past suggests it, either. He seems to be as advertised: a high motor, energetic player who could really help opposite of MW. I kinda like the underdog side of it, also.

I have hopes for Barwin emerging as a pass rushing force, but some of the early hope some posters on the board are giving him is crazy. The cat hasn't even stepped foot on an NFL field yet, and is going to be playing his second year as a DE in the NFL. The kid is raw as they come athletically and I hope he continues to learn his position. I'm waiting to see how he fares in TC and pre-season before I'm even going to come close to saying this guy has super star written all over him.

The other thing that bothers me is hearing Smith being rotated in at DT. I think he has the strength and size to do it but, I'm not sure how much of that is getting blown up. If we had some more proven guys behind Mario and Smith I'd be all for having him or Mario sliding inside. The reality is Barwin is not only a rookie but, again, in his second year at the postion. We've got a few good motor guys who flashed SOME potential in Bulman and Nading. McGlover unfortunately got hurt before we saw what he could do. Tim Jamison might be interesting to see as well. I do wantto see some of these guys get in the rotation but, I think we've got better depth and experience at DT.

Those are things I'd consider before I hear ideas like "with the emergence of Barwin we'll just have to slide Smith in a lot more at DT". We've been complaining about sliding Weaver over to get a pass rush and now we get a guy who can produce a pass rush...and you guys are already wanting to slide him inside? Jeeze.

While we're at it let's sign Dunta to an inflated contract and then move him to FS.

I am also very leery about expecting too much from Barwin. Then again, the last time we had a second rounder, it was DeMeco.

Apples and Oranges.

DeMeco was an all American, the 2005 defensive player of year in the SEC, who won the Lott Trophy, and was at one point or another a finalist for the Lombardi, Butkus, Bednarik, Nagurski, and Draddy awards. Also a first teamer all SEC in 2005 with 37 career starts and finished 5th all time in tackles at Alabama. Barwin doesn't have that pedigree.

Man looking back Ryans really was a steal in the second round.

Not dissing Barwin or think he can't be something special down the line. I'm just amazed at how he hasn't stepped foot on an NFL field and has one year at DE under his belt, yet some people are calling him the next NFL DE star.

I understand your concerns, but the fact is AS is capable of winning matchups vs. guards and centers. He did it a lot with Arizona, getting penetration through the middle of lines. The guy was signed to be a LDE, and he'll be playing there with us. But if Barwin were to emerge, and the IF there is debatable, then he could be well suited for playing DT even in base formations. The Cardinals did all sorts of things with him, he's as versatile as they come on the d-line, playing DE in 3-4 looks as well. This is what justifies his high price tag, which was what all this hoopla stemmed from.
